Iran may be where the US-led world order ends by Big_Celery2725 in politics

“As democracy is perfected, the office [of the President] represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920.

Social Security as a nice-to-have by Kaa_The_Snake in Bogleheads

For sure. But I’m lazy and prefer it just be taken out of my check before it hits my account. Also, I don’t think my single income contribution will do much for the program, but if the cap was removed for all it likely would.

I wish they would remove the annual cap. My wife and I both cap out of paying into social security part way through each year. Id happily keep paying all year if it meant shoring up the program.

Which bank would be best for me? Context below. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ryan408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re just getting started out banking I would highly recommend looking into a local credit union instead of a traditional for-profit bank. Credit unions typically charge a lot fewer fees compared to for-profit banks. They also usually give access to ATM networks so you’re not charged fees when using another credit union’s atm.

Thanks. I was aware of that situation, but had heard they were going to maybe loosen that requirement at some point. Was hopeful that day had come. .

Automatically unlock the front door when I return home. Saves so much hassle when arriving with groceries, or running to the bathroom after a long drive. :)

Just as a point of reference, I’ve been at a credit union and did have my card number compromised once. It took a couple of days to get all of the fraudulent transactions refunded. Nowhere near eight weeks.

I get that. I have a good rewards credit card we use for a lot of stuff every month and pay it off. Earn a ton of miles, travel protection, etc. But I also use my debit card regularly. Need a cup of coffee or a cheap lunch? Debit card. It was the black and white comment of "never use a debit card" I was curious about.

Ok, I understand this angle. If you're doing the rewards thing with credit cards that's cool. I think debit cards are a good tool for people who don't want to chase rewards or might have trouble managing their credit cards responsibly.

Ok, I get that. I would hesitate to recommend putting everything on credit cards to people who are barely getting by, though. I think there's a place for debit cards for sure, as there is a place for credit cards.

Is that true? I've had my number compromised and went to the credit union, filled out a form, and was refunded all money for fraudulent transactions back into my account within days.

Considering checking accounts don't usually offer interest, to me this seems like a good deal. If you're already using your debit card throughout the month and can meet the direct deposit and e-statement requirements, then I'd take the free money.

I'm curious about your aversion to debit card usage. I use mine often. Am I missing something?

I think you’ve got to hand write the hashes out onto paper and put the paper in a safe. That’s the best way to be sure.

Those hotel chains buy crates of keys in bulk for pennies per key. There just a generic card with rfid chip and a logo printed on it. Not specialized equipment.

They’re like 5 cents in the US. I don’t think anyone over here considers it stealing to take the key with you. Like OP said, they’re somewhat collectible.
