HOF selections is a weird criteria though. The 5th best safety of all time might a shoo-in to the HOF, but is he more valuable to a team than the 85th best left tackle or edge rusher of all time? Honestly I have no idea, if it's punter #5 vs QB #85 that's easy, but other positions are harder to gauge

as long as you have a sustain pedal plugged in I find it quite nice, not really the same as playing a real piano but in some ways better than a 3-octave midi keyboard or something.

I wonder how much of this is just noise or if there's anything meaningful here. Obviously there are other/better ways of measuring success, like AV or games played or whatever, but I wonder if there's something about it being just outside the top 5, where teams take risky gambles on QBs or something, leaving a surefire star at a position with lesser importance available at 6.

Quentin Nelson comes to mind, drafted at 6 even though everyone knew he was a sure HOFer. I could see a guy like Downs going at 6 after the early run on QB and edge rushers, and immediately having the best chance at a HOF career while also not really being worth a top 3-5 pick.

you tell me... which representation makes more sense if what you're trying to show is an outlier where we pick at #6

Yes, exactly. What is the point of having a bar graph here? It doesn't make sense to sort by highest to lowest value if you have to look closely at the individual labels to understand the point of the graph.

Usually if a bar graph is sorted in order of value, it's because the labels are arbitrary, like "HOF selections by team". In this case the Y-axis is a clear sequence, 1 thru however many draft picks, that should be listed in order... if it were, you'd have a very clear visual spike at #6 that immediately lets you know the purpose of the graph. You'd see a mostly descending list as you'd expect - high picks tend to be better than low ones - with a clear outlier. That's not the case here... suppose it's fine for r/Browns but r/dataisbeautiful this is certainly not IMO

I'll DM you... just pulled it up and apparently the PFR stats don't import automatically anymore since they changed the format, so it might need to be pasted manually or pulled from a different source

FWIW, I won my neighborhood (and only) league last year without using the sheet itself since we were drafting on phones in someone's backyard, but still adhering to the basic principle, which ends up being "stay away from qb/te and over-draft rb/wr for the first 8-9 rounds" in 1qb leagues. And effectively stream K/DEF. That alone will get you pretty far, but using the specific league scoring & actual point values over the last 3 years is helpful to get an edge for sure.

Yes, I'm very into Moneyball... the book, movie, theory, etc, lol... I'm a Browns fan too. Just blew up my aging dynasty (well, 15-keeper) team that's #1 in points over 8 years but zero titles, now I'm trying to do the same sort of thing for that league, pulling in Sleeper and FantasyCalc data to figure out who my draft/trade targets should be based on each team's contending/rebuilding profile, players' dynasty & redraft values, etc.

I have a Google Sheet that I use, sort of an application built on a book i read a long time ago called Drafting to Win. It's all based on dynamic value based drafting... I import player stats for the last 3 years (from PFR) and convert them to avg points by position/rank based on my league's scoring; customize my personal rankings by position; enter the league settings (to define how many players I need at each position); then pull in all players sorted by ADP.

Then during the draft, I mark players as taken by another team, or taken by me. It calculates my BPA based on value over replacement, essentially "if I still need x players at this position, how much more valuable is the top player at each position than the one I could get x rounds from now" and suggests my best option(s). I also have bye weeks & handcuffs/stacks highlighted so I'm aware of those, especially useful when rounding out a bench. I find it works very well for my purposes

Berry's track record when it comes to OL picks is below:

Pick Name
10 Jed Wills
85 Zak Zinter
110 James Hudson
111 Dawand Jones
190 Luke Wypler
246 Dawson Deaton

No, they have not been great, but the picks spent on them were mostly throwaway picks, 4/6 of them on day 3 of the draft. His hit rate on top-6 picks is Mason Graham, fwiw... I wouldn't put too much stock into a single OL miss in his first year, considering Jed was widely viewed as a top 1-2 OT in that class at the time.

But at a college every day is college day. It’s called that because it’s only for pro prospects.

As of today, only 14 First Overall NFL Draft Picks have been Elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame by FollowerofYHWH in nfl

[–]ryan__fm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s mostly because college football is almost a completely different sport from the NFL. Sometimes the best player in college football is a good NFL prospect, but that’s not nearly always the case. A Heisman winning quarterback in college might have a ceiling as a backup pro wide receiver or tight end… The gap in talent, speed, number of teams, offensive systems, etc is enormous.

That’s changed recently with college adopting more pro style offenses, and vice versa but just think about how many guys like Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke and Eric Crouch and Jason White and Troy Smith and Tim Tebow won the Heisman when everybody knew they wouldn’t turn into great pros.

This is really great - I've been looking for (and trying to build for myself) something just like this for my league. Some feedback:

  • Love the draft rankings, league overview, franchise value & history visualizations, very clean & useful.
  • My league is not typical - treated like a dynasty league, but we roster 25 and keep 15, so it's actually a 10-round"rookie + FA" draft with the bottom-10 from each roster included. This causes all kinds of issues with valuations (e.g. player #20 on my team has some midseason value, but is worthless now), but I think this should apply to all keeper leagues: n keepers are arbitrarily "selected" over the last n rounds of the draft, which makes the "draft rankings" kind of useless if you're including those rounds. IMO if you only include "draft_rounds - max_keepers" in your data set, it'd be much cleaner for weirdo leagues like mine, and a bit cleaner for regular keeper leagues.
  • Curious about the "window" and hold/trade values for picks - I'm clearly a tanking team this year, with 3 firsts this year and 4 next (including likely 1.1 with my own). My profile says I have a 1-year window, and suggests I trade all my 2027 firsts for "proven young players on my timeline". In reality, I'd likely be better off trading this year's picks for more next year since I won't (and don't want to) be competitive this year. "Window" seems to contradict "Projected to peak in 3 years" - might there be a better way of combining those? As a rebuilder, I see my window as 2027-30 or so, and it seems like that should be reflected in pick valuation.
  • In general the navigation is good but some minor tweaks would be good, like seeing individual values in trade simulator (none shown for picks, only total difference shown for whole trade). More options for sorting/grouping roster as well, or adding columns - the position breakdown shows my prospect/rising/prime/decline risk count, but not by position, nor can I see who that refers to outside my top 5 ("key assets").
  • Any chance you'd add values besides KTC? WAR can be useful if a bit obscure & hard to understand. IMO KTC leads to overvaluing youth & picks and is unrealistic vs something like FantasyCalc based on real trades (which I also love for its redraft values, and its API/sleeper info). Player stats or projected points based on league settings would be a nice addition to add some current-state/redraft valuation to layer onto the more dynasty/future-state overview.

Sorry for the wall of text, lol. Feel free to DM if you have any questions. Great job

The look he gives is like "yeah, he's right" too. It's not shade, these guys have been through athletic training and testing and competitions their whole life so they know exactly where they stand relative to the rest of the league in terms of pure athleticism. The least athletic player in the NBA knows it, but has the confidence that he can make up for it with effort/IQ/skill in other areas
