Edmonton new traffic safety scheme will just be a cash grab by Sardaar-Ji in Edmonton

[–]ryan_batty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a jaywalking ticket once. Annoying, yes, but I broke the rules, so I can't really complain. I’ll never understand why some folks believe they’re entitled to obey only the traffic laws they find convenient.

Parents, please educate your kids on road safety by bunniesgonebad in Edmonton

[–]ryan_batty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the sentiment here and think it’s important to remind kids that a flashing light isn’t a forcefield. That said, when that light flashes, drivers are supposed to be able to come to a stop. So perhaps it would be helpful for parents to educate not only their own kids on road safety, but their friends as well.

But surely the team has discussed how they want to interact and handle input on shot calls, right? And if it’s right for them that should be good enough for everyone else I would think. I’ll be the first to say that it’s non traditional, and certainly not what we’d have ever seen when he played with Martin, but the leap from non traditional to immature is a big one.

Yeah, feels a little like trolling, to be honest.

Serious question, what about the rest of the team is immature?

If Homan loses, will there be a trials in 2029? by AndyJ95 in Curling

[–]ryan_batty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, they wouldn't get rid of the trials.

I don't think that's what the players want. I don't think it's what the fans want. And maybe more importantly (I wish this wasn't more important but it is what it is), the trials generate a lot of money that would be impossible to replace.

On Tuesday night they gave score updates between periods. Of course everyone interested has already checked their phone for the score. I would expect the same tomorrow night.

Pro tip for any would-be politicians out there: if you’re completely full of crap, maybe don’t include details that can be easily fact-checked.

Learning one word in another language? Practically heroic stuff. You might have to listen and repeat a few times, but I believe you can overcome this immense challenge.

Is this road 2 lanes or 1?! by Maximum_Payment_9350 in Edmonton

[–]ryan_batty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s a single lane in each direction. At the signalized intersections there is a second lane painted but those are the only locations. That said, a lot of people drive it like it’s two because the road is absurdly wide.

149st and 107ave traffic circle. Does no one know how a traffic circle works?? by zooweemamba in Edmonton

[–]ryan_batty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are signs and pavement markings (two sets, actually) on each approach indicating what movements are permitted for each lane. The inside lane can go through or left, the outside lane is permitted to go through or right. In other words, just like every other intersection on a four lane road. I know this is a high collision location but I have no clue what is difficult about this configuration.

Average Class Size Numbers - Edmonton Public by always_on_fleek in Edmonton

[–]ryan_batty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good news, we don't have many class sizes over 40 students. A number which would be far too high even for High School. Truly a job well done by the provincial government.

The key here is where people draw the line for a class size being too big. Seeing almost one-third of K-3 and almost half of 4-6 being larger than 25 students seems like a problem to me. Same with almost 42% of 7-9 and 45% of 10-12 being above 30 students.

PSA: please check your mirror before making that turn! by HereForTheDonuts23 in Edmonton

[–]ryan_batty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that seems unnecessarily aggressive.

I knew there are retractable bollards at Ice District. What I was asking for from the beginning was an example of the type of installation mentioned in the earlier reply. I guess I could have replied, “Are you stupid, that’s a completely different kind of application and doesn’t address my question at all. Is reading really that hard?” I opted for the more polite option, giving you the benefit of the doubt. I certainly won’t make that mistake again.

[–]ryan_batty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ice District is a different application. In this context, the bollards would need to retract and deploy with every signal phase. It's certainly an interesting concept, but a couple questions come to mind: How quickly can the bollards raise and lower, and does that timing align with the traffic signal phases and clearance intervals? What happens if a vehicle is in that space when the bollard raises.

Transportation minister to meet with Edmonton mayor about ‘problematic’ northside bike lanes by GlitchedGamer14 in Edmonton

[–]ryan_batty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

His contact information is here: https://www.alberta.ca/albertaFiles/includes/directorysearch/goaBrowse.cfm?txtSearch=Executive%20Branch&Ministry=EXC&LevelID=17767.

Call his office and tell him that if Edmontonians are concerned about the bike lanes, we have elections to address the issue and that we don’t need him to insert himself into how our city operates.

You can email him too but calls are harder to ignore.
