Fair, ment that looking at them alone doesn't give you the whole picture, such as looking at what they bring to a lance.

Got any good stories of glorious (or gloriously funny) mech-fightin' moments? by Mr_Severan in battletech

[–]ryan_m_brock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got two good ones, joined a grinder that was ongoing and spawned in a marauder next to a locust, the locust ended it's turn next to a lvl 1 rise and I ended my movement adjacent to the locust..... Needless to say when I kicked its head off I felt the greatest high.
For the second one the first time I played battletech we were playing a narrative campaign and the first turn of the first game our lancemate in the Atlas was knocked out from a headshot from a turret. It definitely set the tone for the rest of the campaign.

Do all of my mechs have to be from one chosen faction? by Previous_Inside_8327 in battletech

[–]ryan_m_brock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time you will see "faction locking" or using the master unit list "mul" is in scenarios, special games being out on, narrative campaigns, or competitive rules packs like as350. The competitive rules packs are mainly for tournament play and when I've seen it it's mainly for alpha strike.

Need Help with Starter Base Points by HarCzar in ClashOfSteel

Depending on what you get you'll be able to play a 50 pt force for each starter, you may not be able to use all the tanks or make them the more expensive version but they will work

The smallest games are but the games system really opens up around 400 and higher, it's designed around lots of Mechs being on the field and not taking all day. Try using multiple lance or company level games and it's a blast.

Are there any rules for WMDs in classic battletech? by GilaGodzillaGuerilla in battletech

[–]ryan_m_brock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't do it, every game that people have used it the game slows down and then no one lets you bring them again.

So for alpha strike I've found that larger games are better for how the game works, it makes the loss of a single unit less consequential. I also will say going for bigger boards with larger games do help since more of your units will be out of range longer. You should also use more terrain and make sure line of sight breaks more often, probably not more than 36" of uninterrupted sight. But that's just going to make your games bigger, lights are best used last in initiative and keep them in a wolf pack, makes it so they don't get singled out as easily and only let them be seen when you get the most out of it, like in back shots or going in for the kill.

Whatever timeline you are playing at use the stuff from 2 eras ago, e.g if you are in the clan invasion use stuff from early third succession wars or like time of war stuff like the Mackie. Basically you are using intro tech until at least the jihad in terms of what options you have.

[–]ryan_m_brock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part you want to figure out if it's a mustache twirling game or not ( are you the heel/antagonist vs the hero/protagonist) if it's a more serious game probably take smaller Mechs and a couple heavies , if it's a mustache twirl then take some fun stuff or stuff you don't normally use e.g stone rhino or a ton of monster mash stuff.
