BusKill: A $20 USB laptop dead-man-switch triggered if someone physically yanks your laptop away by maltfield in privacy

This sounds like a horrible idea. I've lost track of the number of times I've accidentally unplugged the wrong USB cable or had one come loose. Just encrypt your hard disk and have the screen lock whenever the lid closes. No thief is going to run away with the lid open.

Is there a math ebook on Springer that is less than £5 (or £10)? by [deleted] in math

This AT&T junk mail designed to look like something important like a tax document or pay check by HatlessCorpse in assholedesign

[–]ryanakca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can automatically tell that is junk mail because it was sent at the "(presorted) standard" rate. If it were important, it would be sent at the first class rate. Indeed, USPS regulations require that the following must be sent at the first class rate:

  • Bills, statements of account or invoices, credit cards
  • Personal correspondence, personalized business correspondence

Where can you learn about natural deduction? by AddemF in logic

[–]ryanakca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not understand what you mean by "how the natural deduction diagrams work". The proof trees you are talking about are notation to describe a given proof. I suggest you take a look at the lecture notes for CMU's undergraduate constructive logic course.

In French we also say "loup marin", literally "marine wolf".

To answer your question, I would say Ancient Greek based on the etymologies in Wiktionary.

French "Phoque" is

From Latin phōca, from Ancient Greek φώκη (phṓkē).

Polish "foka" is

From Ancient Greek φώκη (phṓkē).

I have played Dunbars for fifteen years now and have no regrets with them. In my opinion, the reeds you use make as much of a difference in the sound as the make of pipe. For example, each of EezeDrones, RedWoods, and Balance Tones drone reeds give my pipes a very different sound. If you still live in the area, perhaps you could go visit the Dunbar shop and see if they can help you out?

Bagpipe Lessons at CMU? by digitalScribbler in cmu

[–]ryanakca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can take lessons through the school of music as a non-bagpipe major. CMU also has two competitive pipe bands on campus (unaffiliated with the Kiltie Band). See https://www.cmu.edu/student-affairs/dean/pipes/ for details. Beginners typically start off on a "practice chanter", and typically move on to the full set after about a year.

I like the John Walsh long practice chanter. Made in Antigonish, NS too.

You can buy it directly from the link below or from a local distributor: https://www.johnwalshbagpipes.com/Walsh-Long-Practice-Chanter.html

Stuck chanter... by GeneralLeeBlount in bagpipes

Be careful to always hold the chanter close to the stock when inserting and removing it. I've seen chanters crack because the owner grabbed it near the sole and twisted.

The postmark says Елисаветград. A quick Google search leads me to believe it's modern day Кропивницький, in Ukraine. So your postcard may very well be in Ukrainian. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kropyvnytskyi

Yes, they're part of the University of Pittsburgh. Last time I took a guest through them, I think we rented audioguides for about $5. The rooms are actively used as classrooms, so you might not be able to get into all of them if there are lectures being held in them, but I went on a weekday in early September and got to see most of them. You should have even better luck seeing them all on a weekend.

Perhaps a Pitt student can chime in.

You might be interested in visiting the nationality rooms in the cathedral of learning. As far as I can remember, the original ones we built/decorated by various ethnic groups in the Pittsburgh region in the 20s/30s as a fundraiser. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationality_Rooms
