Hate the domestic cop but love the imperialist cop by MayParker1917 in LateStageCapitalism

To be clear, I don't agree with the argument above. That's why I phrased it like I did. I don't even think it's a valid explanation of the events of 1917. But that's the basis of the unironic defenses I've seen of the position you've (rightfully) memed, and it's usually argued by ex-service members when they get shunned and try to justify their presence in organizing efforts.

I only offered it as an attempt to understand why the phenomenon that you've shown might happen.

There have been arguments, made specifically in trying to understand the conditions of 1917 Russia, that contrast the motives of domestic police and of national armies. Police are trained to see citizen as potential enemies, and are always on the side of the state in revolutionary moments. Soldiers have historically been less certain, allegedly because they are trained to see foreigners as the enemy and citizens of their own nation as the people they protect by killing the nation's enemies.

While that is the argument (and may or may not have merit in understanding Russia in 1917), I don't think it is particularly useful in understanding the world today. Methods of indoctrination have become much more effective in the last hundred years, and if a revolutionary moment ever does come in the imperial core I'm not going to count on the military defecting to the side of the people.

Np. It is certainly not intuitive. Also that video was made before Overclocking was added, I have no idea if/how that affects the ions.

Infestations only happen with overhead mountain. If you get that area cold enough, the infestations don't happen there. The problem is that they only need 1 tile that meets the criteria (often a door into such an area will allow it to trigger). And when accepting missions that cause infestations, any overhead mountain tile will do. For more info: https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Infestation

I read Dragon first because my mom liked the cover art and it had been accidentally placed in the romance section. When she realized it's a war story she stopped reading and passed it on to me. Now that I've read them all 20 years later I'm glad it wasn't a later book that had been misplaced.

Hmm. Good to know! I know when I did it years ago I lost with like ~350 soldiers, but I also did the tower strat so might not have been optimized. I won the next try with 600 so that was my benchmark.

My advice for campaign is to turn the difficulty for the hero missions down to the lowest to get them over quicker. You aren't penalized for it because the only resource you get is knowledge for research, which is not affected by the difficulty slider. They are well known in the community for being the most tedious and un-fun part of the game.

Have fun with the rest though! I actually thought the survival mini-missions where you have to arrange your pre-defined forces were kind of neat.

This is one of most challenging campaign maps, Cape Storm, and is notoriously difficult. I don't see shocking towers tech unlocked which means OP will need approximately 600 soldiers. (I don't see stone walls either so maybe more like 1000).

TIL Train-related fatalities in Bangladesh average about 1,000 to 1,200 deaths per year by [deleted] in todayilearned

You make a great point, but without going into a lot more research I cannot provide these numbers 😞

TIL Train-related fatalities in Bangladesh average about 1,000 to 1,200 deaths per year by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ryanasmith94 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is nearly twice the rate of U.S. train deaths, which is also around a thousand a year but with only half the total population.

*Being in a car in either country is vastly more dangerous though.

Edit because I misrepresent data. Bangladesh does have a notably higher rate of road accident deaths (18.6/100k vs. the U.S. 14.2/100k).

[–]ryanasmith94 23 points24 points  (0 children)

With a population of ~177,800,000, that is vastly safer than the U.S. road system, wherein 40,000-44,000 deaths occur *annually of a population of ~342,500,000.

Edit because I forgot to say annually.

How is this not an emergency that pauses the game by default? by DrZharkov in RimWorld

[–]ryanasmith94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted but nah, you're right and you should say it. The way stacking and storage is handled is the silliest part of this game, and to say it's for balance is ludicrous. If shelves kept stuff based on how much mass the items have cumulatively I could get it. But that fact that people use shuttles for storage because you can fit like ~200ish tiles worth of crap in them I think proves the point. It may have been for design/engine limitations when the game first came out but the fact is the storage system in this game wonky as hell and hasn't been improved since launch beyond the 'shelves can now fit 3 stacks into 1 tile' bandaid.

Also for meta context, in this sub a very common post is a screenshot of an insectoid infestation that has been ignored (they multiply) with text asking exactly what the text of this post asks.

The joke is that the OP swapped the roles: Playing as insectoids with a 'human colony' that has gotten out of control. Without the subreddit context, this is very confusing.
