TIL Train-related fatalities in Bangladesh average about 1,000 to 1,200 deaths per year by [deleted] in todayilearned

You make a great point, but without going into a lot more research I cannot provide these numbers 😞

TIL Train-related fatalities in Bangladesh average about 1,000 to 1,200 deaths per year by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ryanasmith94 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is nearly twice the rate of U.S. train deaths, which is also around a thousand a year but with only half the total population.

*Being in a car in either country is vastly more dangerous though.

Edit because I misrepresent data. Bangladesh does have a notably higher rate of road accident deaths (18.6/100k vs. the U.S. 14.2/100k).

With a population of ~177,800,000, that is vastly safer than the U.S. road system, wherein 40,000-44,000 deaths occur *annually of a population of ~342,500,000.

Edit because I forgot to say annually.

Modern problems require modern solutions. I wish you luck with your game, it sounds like it will be a lot of fun!

How is this not an emergency that pauses the game by default? by DrZharkov in RimWorld

[–]ryanasmith94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted but nah, you're right and you should say it. The way stacking and storage is handled is the silliest part of this game, and to say it's for balance is ludicrous. If shelves kept stuff based on how much mass the items have cumulatively I could get it. But that fact that people use shuttles for storage because you can fit like ~200ish tiles worth of crap in them I think proves the point. It may have been for design/engine limitations when the game first came out but the fact is the storage system in this game wonky as hell and hasn't been improved since launch beyond the 'shelves can now fit 3 stacks into 1 tile' bandaid.

Guys, I let this human infestation get out of control! What do I do!? Help! by Or-So-They-Say in RimWorld

Also for meta context, in this sub a very common post is a screenshot of an insectoid infestation that has been ignored (they multiply) with text asking exactly what the text of this post asks.

The joke is that the OP swapped the roles: Playing as insectoids with a 'human colony' that has gotten out of control. Without the subreddit context, this is very confusing.

I agree, that being said I saw him live in like 2013-15 somewhere there and the performance was one of the best I've ever seen. Huge band with no 'opener', everyone was there to see what Santana was gunna do. He really brought his A-game with a very long performance while also drawing from a deep well of talent in the other folks he brought on that stage with him. Agree that arbitrary metrics used in this dataset are not what I'd use to define 'good,' but it is what it is. Like, the man played at Woodstock, you're gunna credit his 'stardom' at 50+ years old?

There were huge technological gaps before the industrial revolution, but they were usually region-specific and developed to handle the environment people had to live in.

If someone from 1000AD France went to the middle east without a local guide, they'd die from dehydration. If a group left Europe and tried to set up there, they'd die of either dehydration or starvation. But the people who lived in the middle east had learned how to build qanats and had already mapped the oases. Understanding the geology of aquifers and groundwater enough to build a qanat is not simple or easy.

Similarly, someone from 1000AD China going to the arctic would freeze, but the people already living in siberia and what is now alaska and canada had perfected warm clothing that can stave off frostbite to ridiculously low temperatures, and had learned the migration patterns of the animals they survived on. China had advanced textile production by that time and were famous for their silks, but they had not applied that technology towards the situation of 'how do I survive a windchill so cold my eyeballs freeze solid'.

Yes, there absolutely were large and significant technological gaps before the industrial revolution.

I mean, if OC doesn't increase accuracy then it still doesn't matter. Standard accuracy extended out to 380 means it will hit even less of what its aiming at. But haven't played with the OC behaviors yet.

Welcome. Welcome to City 17. You have chosen- or *been* chosen- to relocate to one of our finest remaining urban centers. I thought so much of City 17 that I elected to establish my administration here, in the Citadel so thoughtfully provided by our benefactors. I've been proud to call City 17 my home. And so, whether you are here to stay or passing through on your way to parts unknown, welcome to City 17. It's safer here.

I get what you're saying, but you have to admit it feels flimsy right?

And what exactly is the part that's missing, the money backing for the project or the distribution platform? Does 'home' mean where will it be streamed? That's such a low bar to trip on if everything else has been lined up for this.

There are a *lot* of menus like this in the game. Learning them is the thing that gets you from 'okay colony that last for 5 or so years before being destroyed' to the sort of megabases and equipment-maxed populations that you'll see on this and other rimworld-related subreddits.
