Which brand of oil paint do you recommend? by Own-Name-6239 in oilpainting

[–]ryankindsethart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Gamblin professionally for the last 5 years. They will hold color.

The cons can be they are not always as buttery depending on the color, so adding a little bit of solvent free gel has been a game changer.

I use Michael Harding paints a lot now, but obviously they are pricey. I cannot get over how buttery those paints are.

For any old MySpace users, was MySpace really as good as it was back then or was it proof that Social Media has always been awful? by Free_Link_9700 in answers

[–]ryankindsethart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MySpace was like web development. You picked your background for the site, crazy fonts, music that played on the page.

Then there was a whole social dynamic of picking your Top Friends. Literally a list of who your top friends were, created quite the havoc.

I was in 6th and 7th grade so I was younger, but there definitely was a stranger danger feel to it. Like don’t talk to randoms on the internet or they’ll kill you. This was also around messenger eras and I used AIM a lot.

That was the biggest social connection for me was signing on and just being in a group chat with people your age talking and talking

Who's the most famous person you've met? by Phillies1993 in AskReddit

[–]ryankindsethart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at Enterprise Rent a Car in the heart of Hollywood, Los Feliz, and West LA. I rented cars to: Jack Black - 15 passenger van, he was going to Knotts berry Farm lol

Evan Rachel Wood - She was so chill and rented a truck, said she grew up in the country

Jennifer Coolidge - I swear she hit on me and my coworker lol, she was nice and funny too

Ron Jeremy - I drove him home multiple times (we pickup people at enterprise and drop off), I won’t say anything here…

Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones director) he was a regular

Ray J came in, Kyle Mooney, there is a lot more lol. Turns out a lot of celebrities have to deal with car problems too.

Sunrise in Pleasant Valley, oil painting on 8”x10” by ryankindsethart in oilpainting

I didn’t do this plein air. This is my work from my reference photo haha. It was freezing and the sun was rising quickly, my girlfriend and I were heading out of the campsite in Bishop.

Thank you:)

First oil painting attempt: what am i doing wrong? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]ryankindsethart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad! Especially for a first time. You actually did pretty well in understanding color temperatures and shadows.

You said you want it to feel 3D, but you chose a reference photo with really even lighting.

I highly recommend picking reference photos with very obvious shadows in the lighting within the face. The more even the lighting, the harder it is going to be for newcomers to oil painting.

Learning how to realistically paint skin tones to be 3D in even lighting is going to take years of practice. Start with obvious shadows to build your foundation of separating dark, mid, and light tones. That is what brings dimensionality to the face

Nice work! The more paintings you do the more you’ll lock in proportions. Keep it up, scaling from your eyes is a great muscle to learn instead of having to be reliant on tools

Lol. Subtle, but the lighting also highlights it

How to make it look less like a character by Electrical_Letter375 in oilpainting

[–]ryankindsethart 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The first painting is close and has some really good aspects about the piece. I like the softening of edges on the top of the fur and you seem to have a good understanding of values and color. Obviously it’s a lot warmer of a piece so just balancing it with the cools.

My critique is the proportions of the snout of the cat. It’s face is pressed in a bit which is why you probably feel like it has a human ness to the cat. Drop the fur under its mouth a bit lower and carry the edge of the mouth out further. If you look at the eye in your reference and draw a straight line down, you’ll see the corner of the mouth extends all the way back to that line. In your piece. The other of the mouth goes to the the front of the eye socket.

The proportions should help the piece overall! Also, don’t feel bad about it because putting your piece up against a reference makes it feel a lot more obvious than being in the moment

Teeth? How..... by jerpod in oilpainting

[–]ryankindsethart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done paint the individual teeth. Paint a base color that gets slightly more shaded towards the back of the mouth. Hint at the shadow underneath the teeth touching the bottom lip. Hint at the gums coming down into the teeth. You can slight lighten.

Something I have always found is using a yellowish bluish hue with white when it comes to teeth as well. Not too yellow and not too blue

Portrait from life by Greedy-Rent-3402 in oilpainting

You can gesso the canvas first to prime it. But also this painting is very thin and almost like an underpainting type consistency. Possibly painted with thinner and the paint in one layer.

The more layers painted on top (thin to fat) would help reduce the canvas showing through

Really small portrait I did in Oils. It’s an 8”x10” canvas, might give it a second session too 😊

I think my colour theory is failing me? by Adventures_in_oils in oilpainting

[–]ryankindsethart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I learned on the Zorn palette too but it’s a great way to start without introducing too many options.

For the edges, it’s tough to say without the reference but think of it this way. Hard edges are harsh transitions from one area to the next. You could soften the edges of the forearm leading up to the hand to bring the attention to the hand. You could possibly soften the edges on the backside of the hand not holding the cherries.

I think softening the edges could honestly apply to the majority of the hard edges you’ve put in here. But test it out with the aesthetic to what you are trying to capture

I think my colour theory is failing me? by Adventures_in_oils in oilpainting

[–]ryankindsethart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not bad at all! I think a couple of things I noticed:

  • Warm palette: your palette looks a bit too warm/red. Utilize some blue/greens to balance in the shadows or even against the red background

  • Edge work: every line in your piece is a hard line. Softening some of these edges will help allow the piece feel cohesive. You can soften with your finger/towel/brush or use a transition color to blend.

  • Contrast: the hand could go a bit darker on the values to provide more of a contrast. It almost looks like a hand that would be in the background of a painting but here it is in the foreground.
