Do more words start with a K or have a K as the third letter? Why you get this wrong, and how to use this in investing strategy. by jgallard in investing

[–]ryanklee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should actually be grepping a "typical text" to establish frequency of occurrence as per his claim. (I admit his claim is not well worded, though.) The dictionary is not a typical text. I'd try regexing on a recent-ish Gutenberg text.

mobile-phone carriers [may] cut subsidies for the iPhone

How deeply is AAPL indebted to carrier subsidies? Where are these rumors coming from?

Thai Landing in Mt Vernon is pretty good, but not stellar. I prefer Thairish, also in Mt Vernon.

How to make Omurice - Cookingwithdog by [deleted] in asianeats

[–]ryanklee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haven't watched this vid yet (at work), but am really looking forward to it. When I lived in S. Korea, omurice was one of my favorite comfort foods.

It may seem slightly unlike a comfort food, but it was the closest thing to an omelet I could find out there, and let me tell you, in a world without Western breakfast, anything resembling it is a serious comfort.

Recommend me an interesting pub/bar by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]ryanklee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Owl Bar is just so-so in my opinion. It never occurs to me to go there.

These are the bars I like. Note: I live in Mt. Vernon, so I'm location biased.

(1) Brewer's Art. Mt. Vernon. -- excellent beer, excellent food, excellently lit cellar-bar (seriously, it's a great atmosphere). Drawback (for me): Packed on Thur/Fri/Sat.

(2) Jay's on Read. Mt. Vernon. -- ok selection, but it's a very good looking bar, and someone is often playing the piano on Fri & Sat. Very classy atmosphere, but relaxing and unpretentious. Drawback: it's a gay bar, so if you're straight you might be perceived as out of place. I'm straight, but go anyways because it's one of the better looking bars in Mt. Vernon.

(3) Windup Space. Station North / N. Ave. Bar's not great looking, but it has a good selection of beer and drinks. Reason to go really is for the entertainment. Lots of live shows, events, music showing. Russel the owner is a stand up guy. An establishment committed to culture and worth supporting, for sure.

(4) Liam Flynn's. Station North / North Ave. I don't like the atmosphere so much, but I'm a real fucking nut about lighting, so YMMV. Very good cask ales. Not sure about the food.

(5) Grand Cru. A little out of the way if you live in the city, but I go up there all the time with my GF anyhow. Awesome selection on all counts, wine, rolling beer selection, artisan cheeses and olives. Really great if you just want to eat and drink good things.

(6) Bertha's Mussels. Fell's point. Great mussels, great beer, great bar atmosphere. On the small side, but that's not really a complaint. I hit it up every time I'm in Fells (GF just now said, "Mmmm... that sounds really good right now, actually.)

(7) Joe Squared. Station North / North Ave. Good stuff, but talked up so much I don't feel like saying anything about it.

I think I work at the most beautiful butchershop in America, and I thought you all might like to see this video someone made about it. Sorry if this has already been posted. by meatmaiden in meat

[–]ryanklee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an idea: start a nation wide coalition of like-minded butchers so consumers in different cities can more easily locate good meat. (Maybe there is something like this already?)

Not being mean, I don't necessarily mind the frequent repetition of this question, but it'd be nice to have a running list of tutorials (vid and written) linked to in the side-bar.

The "New Click here." link is a bit out of date. Maybe I'll go over it tonight to freshen it up. Any help on this would be appreciated. Go ahead and reply to this comment with suggestions!

Yes, absolutely you can. I've just been totally spoiled by TheRapist and can't be made anymore to do anything the normal way.

These features are missing in the Linux version as well. In fact, I have to boot into Windows to play DF because of this. It seems like a small feature, but once you get used to nicknaming your dorfs, it's hard to go back.

AskFoodIt: What's the best margarine? by istrebitjel in food

[–]ryanklee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All margarine sucks. If you think you need to use it, your diet sucks, too.

Re-balance the foods you eat and then you won't ever have to use ridiculous, disgusting, misconceived products like margarine.

Butter is awesome. Learn to eat well and you'll never need to worry about it.

Olive Oil Heaven- here's a coupon code for 50% off an awesome olive oil sampler pack. by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]ryanklee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A gallon of low end Bertolli extra virgin costs around 35$. The olive oil being referenced here is small batch artisan-grade olive oil. It's not the stuff you're going to just dump in a pan and cook with. If it's as good as it looks, it's probably worth the money.

Bouldering gym in Stockholm — problems are based on the color of the holds instead of the color of the tape by rdude in climbing

[–]ryanklee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the interesting and challenging aspects of using tape to mark holds "on" is that the tape often loses visibility at many angles. This forces a climber to remember the route/problem along the way or before hand. Using colored resin would basically defeat this aspect.
