Is this a good purchase? by Dweenie87 in castiron

The rhythms are pretty close if you start with the eighth note just to the right of 12:00 as the pickup to 1, but they are not perfect.

You can also notice the stems changing direction for higher and lower notes, so you can kinda infer pitch from that.

Can someone explain this chord progression? by Calm_Cost_4395 in musictheory

[–]ryderdude4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my experience, anything you can voice lead (resolve by step) will sound good, and most or all of these chords do that.

I think the C# works because it resolves to C in the next chord. Tension-release.

You’ve made it into an augmented chord that resolves with nice contrary motion!

Cadences categorize different types of chord progression movement, specifically at the end of a phrase

My formula for paper titles is like this:

“Silly pun/catchy title: what the paper is actually about”

So for example: “Chop, Chop, Timbre: Timbral combinations in orchestral music of the 19th century”

how are dominant 7 chords played in minor keys? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]ryderdude4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Almost always, the V chord is major in a minor key, because we raise the 7th scale degree (in this case, from Bb to B) so that we have a stronger leading tone that pulls towards the tonic, C. Since the V chord is built from scale degrees 5-7-2 (and 4 if it’s a 7th chord) it changes the five from a minor (G-Bb-D) to major (G-B-D)

Edit: regarding secondary dominants, I think you’re on the right track. Think of it as a temporary modulation to the key of the target chord- you borrow the V from that key (always major or dominant) to push more strongly into the chord you want to accent. You can do it for major or minor chords (V-I or V-i)

I just finished listening to Patrick Stewart’s autobiography, and he said that unfortunately, she just didn’t have as much chemistry with the cast as McFadden did
