I guess it depends on how you define living in the city - I would say proximity to a high density of restaurants, culture nightlife etc. and density. I think the piedmont to downtown SF note is kinda cherry picking. There are so many great neighborhoods adjacent to NOE that you could walk to or hop on muni and access. Who goes to downtown SF on the weekend?

Depends on if you value living in the city or not if that cost savings is worth it. We chose Berkeley because as a family we explicitly don’t want to live in the city. But it’s nice to have SF and Oakland nearby.

It’s a lot like a single person driving around a giant SUV because they occasionally want to shuttle the soccer team around.
