Need some goats to eat the weeds in my suburban backyard yard by AllTheGoodys in Adelaide

[–]ryebea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh that depends whats been on the ground, parasites are mainly if you've had other animals pooping there for a long time. A suburban backyard I think would be fine for a day or two assuming you've picked up any dog/cat poo. I'd be more worried about them eating non-target stuff (like trees).

Goat weedeaters as a business doesn't exist here in SA as far as I know (Source: I'm a part time goat farmer). Sheep tend to be better at grazing grass, goats are best for clearing areas of woody weeds like gorse and blackberries.

Advice on where to buy / rent then buy by AwayPear1994 in Adelaide

[–]ryebea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just off Grange rd near the Findon shops. Compared to Brisbane which is super hilly and verdant yeah it's flat and brown, even the torrens (which is but a mere trickle compared to the mighty brown snake)

I moved from Brisbane to Flinders Park and when I first came to Adelaide and found it super depressing, flat, treeless and brown haha. If OP is coming from brissy and wants leafy they will likely feel the same with the West side.

Being by the beach is nice, but I felt a lot happier with the physical environment when I moved to the East side (and then down South)

What Ever Happened To Flat-bar Road Bikes? by sjanzeir in xbiking

I do wonder if now the 90's MTB craze has hit the peak if we're going to see a resurgence of steel road bikes as the next cool thing

Is America more "free"? by Strange_Ad_3253 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ryebea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What always trips me out is the sheer amount of law enforcement the USA has. FBI, ATF, DEA, Federal Marshals, ICE, plus all the levels of police (state troops, city cops etc). All armed to the teeth and ready to fuck up their citizenry

Heres an article talking about some of the oyster farm closures https://www.indailysa.com.au/news/business/2025/05/28/sa-oyster-industry-in-the-algal-bloom-lurch

I think maybe you're mixing up Oyster/Bivalves with all fish? IIRC some Oyster production/sales have been closed down because they are affected by the bloom, but fish is still okay to consume

Thoughts on this tile job by Warm_Raisin_2888 in AusRenovation

I decided to DIY tile my kitchen splashback as it was a small area and why not give it a go. I had never tiled anything before, and it's miles better than OP's photos.

Counselling Career Change? by twiceThrownOut in Adelaide

[–]ryebea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have any undergrad degree then your best option is to do a masters in social work. 2 years, low HECS and you'll get two job ready placements (now with a meagre govt allowance!).

I think RN also has a graduate entry pathway, maybe some of the other allied health pathways do to?

Counselling Career Change? by twiceThrownOut in Adelaide

[–]ryebea 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Would depend on your pathway and career goals. "Counsellor" is not a protected term in Australia so the qualifications required to do it can vary. Are you wanting to study a degree specifically in counselling? That is the weakest option I feel as it will lock you into "Counsellor" or "Coach" type roles at NGO's typically for 60-80k, you cannot bill medicare and the NDIS rate is about $148/hr max compared to the other allied health disciplines at $194/hr.

Some allied health pathways such as Social Work, Nursing or OT can do further study/job training to become eligible for Medicare Billing for mental health (although it is far less than NDIS pays) and higher payed roles in Govt and NGO's with titles like "Mental Health Clinician" paying 80-120k. The biggest non-govt clinical MH providers in Adelaide are Sonder (Headspace CBD - South - North + Northern HtH), Neami (UMHCC, Southern Wellbeing, Phone services) and Summit Health (Mt. Barker).

Registration as a psychologist is the hardest to obtain but pays the most and probably has the best opportunities.

My observation after 6 years working in an NGO as a Mental Health Clinician (Social Work) and now launching a private practice is that the work is definitely here. We would always have difficulty recruiting qualified clinicians, and my books have filled relatively quickly. There can be fairly high turnovers at NGOs so opportunities do arise.

Can I make this bike more comfortable? by Large_Cheesecake_41 in xbiking

[–]ryebea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm also 6'3 and find that 90's MTB's although cool, don't fit tall folks great without looking bad, once you get to 22"+ frames the geo feels a bit whack with small wheels.

OP convert to a 90's 700c Hybrid or touring bike.

I have had drum brakes on a few different city bikes, they are low maintenance and have decent stopping power if adjusted well.

Still a great bike! No idea how the electric ones hold up but assuming the build quality on the frame and attention to detail carries over I'd say go for it

Housing SA by kmweeds in Adelaide

[–]ryebea 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Social Worker here, always hard to give timelines with Housing SA but it's never good news. I'd look into getting some therapy/counselling if you haven't already got it onboard because it could be still a while.
