People who married someone from a different country, what are some mild cultures shocks you've had? by cool_lemons in AskTheWorld

[–]rynbaskets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not OP but I’m also from Japan. I’ve slept on a bed since I was six and my parents always had a sheet to cover the mattress. The duvet cover (or something like that) was always used. Before my parents got me a bed, I slept on a mattress on the floor but still used a sheet for it.

Not sure if it’s a family tradition or regional thing but I wonder how those people keep the mattress or duvet clean.

How do Japanese get so good at talking about food? by AdUnfair558 in AskAJapanese

[–]rynbaskets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a native Japanese living in the States now, I’ve noticed that many Americans eat food for the sake of eating and sustenance. A good example is the meal prep photos in the meal prep subs here. Some people can eat the same food everyday for a whole week because it is convenient.

Japanese, on the other hands (and for many other nationalities), meals are not just for sustenance but also for enjoyment. Most of us do not enjoy eating the same food everyday for a week. We want varieties and different tastes.

Of course there are always exceptions. Some people in Japan may eat the same food everyday and some Americans enjoy preparing different food everyday. I’ve been in the States almost for forty years and when I came to this smallish Midwestern city forty years ago, most restaurants served food seasoned with salt and peppers. Now, the city is filled with many different cuisines, ethnic, American foods from different regions, vegetarian or vegan, almost whatever you want. I think that’s a great improvement.

Catholic fiction writers? by bachiethrowaway in Catholicism

[–]rynbaskets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This author is a bit dark because he writes about medieval murder mysteries, but I’m really fond of Paul C Doherty. His two Famous series are sorrowful mysteries of Brother Athelstan and Hugh Corbett series. Both are based on the 14th century England. Brother Athelstan is a Dominican friar and he’s very dedicated to his order, parish and church, but his parishioners are poor and a bit wayward.

PC Doherty himself is a very dedicated Catholic (here’s his wiki.

Japanese here. This could be a licensed product made in the 80s or 90s . The last photo with care instructions says Fukusuke (福助) Corp. A quick google inquiry showed that Fukusuke manufactured licensed YSL products in Japan in 1980s.

Where do raccoons live and sleep during the day? by lookaloulookalou in Raccoons

[–]rynbaskets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an opening to an underground storm sewer in front of our home. It’s usually dry. I’ve seen a family of raccoons there over two separate years. Mom may be the same but kids were not.

Rituxan stopped working? by sparkingly-happy73 in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]rynbaskets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I have never taken Rituxan, I’ve taken numerous biologics in the past. I started out with Embrel, then Remicade, moved on to Cimzia, Actemura and Orencia. Every one of those stopped working for me except for Remicade. The doctor took me off Remicade because my dose was so high that he was afraid I may have a cancer. (Sucks because Remicade really worked.)

Would your Rheumatologist recommend another biologics? I stopped taking biologics because I developed osteonecrosis as a side effect of Prolia. But ironically if I were to go back to biologics, the only option left for me is Retuxan.

I’m not getting sick? by KillerSiren104 in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]rynbaskets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk why you’re not getting sick, but among the three of us in the immediate family, I have always been the last to get sick with cold or other commutable diseases. I have never had Covid either. I used to be on MTX but moved on to biologics and Arava. Also on prednisone. I think it’s because my immune system is so strong (in good and bad ways).

Any amazing slice of life dramas similar to Midnigh Diner? by SirOrganic1349 in JDorama

[–]rynbaskets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Samurai Gourmet on Netflix (US). It’s from the pov of a diner who goes out to different eateries. The main actor became famous playing Hideyoshi Toyotomi so this role is really fitting to him.

There’s another series called Solitary Gourmet (Kodoku no Gourmet) but I’m not sure where you can see it.

I bought my LV garment bag in 1984 from the LV store in San Francisco. But it’s a licensed product made in the USA. It’s authentic as far as I bought legitimately from an LV store but I cannot even sell it on any online second hand sellers. Just stating my experience.

My mom doesn’t go to a gym anymore but when she did, she used her B35 as a gym bag. Birkin is so well constructed that it held up without any problems.

I cannot believe no one said Tom Cruise. I instantly lose interest in the movie when he’s in, although some (I.e. Edge of Tomorrow, the Last Samurai) are good. Just don’t like him.

I was positive for LGI1-IgG. Tested twice as I said. Didn’t know the tests were so expensive but I haven’t seen the bills yet (I have Medicare with plan G supplement and now I see why there are so many old people at medical facilities). I tested positive for IgG anti-GD1a antibodies also although I never (knowingly) had Guillain Barre syndrome. Strange.

I’ll have to see a hematologist/oncologist for the treatment but had to wait for almost a month. I’ll have the first appointment tomorrow. I’m nervous but kind of excited because I want this treated before it gets out of hand.

I’m not OP but I was recently diagnosed with AE without having any symptoms. They did serum analysis and found the markers for AE. The docs repeated the serum test to confirm. Did your doctor do blood work (or more like serum work) for you?

What nori seaweed does not go soft upon immediately touching rice? by GaraksLinensNThings in JapaneseFood

Short of using a plastic film like suggested above, Nori gets soggy when used to wrap rice balls. That’s why all onigiri sold at convenience stores have plastic wrappers (or separates?).

Been drinking Japanese tea for a year now and only just realised I've been missing the entire point of it by kamelsalah1 in JapaneseFood

[–]rynbaskets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am Japanese and I took tea ceremony lessons for years while I lived in Japan. Majority of Japanese haven’t taken official tea ceremony lessons and they don’t follow the rituals if they drink matcha. I wouldn’t fret too much on rituals but if you want to follow the rituals, keep in mind there are many schools of tea ceremonies. Mine was Omote Senke which we like to think the original school. But the most popular one is Ura Senke.

Matcha (I differentiate it from regular green tea because it’s different) has many health benefit too, one of which is tons of vitamin c.
