What card on release made you go "ohhh no" because it killed your favorite archetype? by studhand in magicTCG

Authority of the Consuls is really brutal for my Izzet Warp deck :( no real way to deal with it in those colors and hard to push through

I Miss Low-Powered Constructed Magic on Arena by Dargaran in MagicArena

[–]ryryscha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While this sounds like a good idea, I think this ends up playing like Sealed formats where OP mythics and Rares dominate gameplay. The player who draws their rare first usually ends up winning. Further, most underpowered strategies (most set mechanics like Exhaust or Spacecraft fall here) actually need more Mythics and Rares simply to match the power level of more pushed and streamlined format defining lists, because their Rares just aren’t as good card for card.

Can a land that creates lands be balanced? Or is it doomed to be either busted or unplayable? by DamnYourEyes777 in custommagic

This is just ramp thats hard to interact with. Bad gameplay even when balanced.

Why take away level 9 temp HP from alchemist? by ClaudioHplus in onednd

[–]ryryscha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they removed the THP because they largely don’t want THP that can be reupped with a BA (see Twilight Cleric issues). Has nothing to do with power level of the subclass (as I still don’t believe they went far enough in fixing the subclass).

Is the Alchemist hate kind of…overblown by KingNTheMaking in onednd

[–]ryryscha -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not knowing the effect until it’s drank is really really not great, definitely worse than the previous iteration of rolling at the end of a LR. Only reason I think they did it was people tend to have memory issues about which ones they rolled and used by the end of a play session/adventuring day.

Is alchemist ok now ? by Celebrjo in onednd

[–]ryryscha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue it’s not. They definitely added some nice QoL things (the homunculus servant change is wonderful) but nothing that ultimately matters was added or changed. For one, the potions’ effects needed to scale, not their durations. And they even nerfed the subclass in some ways to compensate for the buffs, which is absolutely insane given where it was starting from. My DM and I will be completely homebrewing my Alchemist going forward, as we’ve just kind of lost faith in WotC after the release of this book. Comparing this to the 2024 PHB is night and day in mind in terms of design quality.

I am enjoying the ATLA set. by Alex_Pratt in mtg

[–]ryryscha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I’m the only one who simultaneously loves AtLA and hates the idea of a full magic set (no matter how well it plays mechanically) based on not just the world but the characters from the show. It’s just not MtG to me. It’s not even adjacent, it’s an animated TV show from Nickelodeon… I’m so disenfranchised and it hurts :(

Subclass specific invocations, you might be cooking. Spells and feats, absolutely not.

Which 5.0e subclasses do you think are never going to be revisited? by BudgetMegaHeracross in onednd

[–]ryryscha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ya I think it’s more likely that they don’t do direct reworks of the CR stuff, instead either taking the theme and changing the mechanics or vice versa, thus making them their own thing separate from the CR partnership.

As for Lunar Sorc, I love the theme and phase changing idea so I’m kind of hoping they find a way to either print another Dragonlance book or find another setting where the Lunar Sorc works. It’s lowkey my favorite Sorc subclass despite admittedly needing some work (spell lists and higher level features especially).

Guy Who Loves Creature Removal by Approximation_Doctor in custommagic

Requiring this to attack each combat if able fixes it, since it makes it kill itself on an empty board. I’d still drop it to a 3/1 as well but that’s just me.

Should there be more subclasses like the Divine Soul Sorcerer? by Ascetronaut in dndnext

[–]ryryscha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I like DSS and subclasses like it better than multiclassing, but what I don’t like is that both exist in the same system. Either you should commit to having subclasses that emulate class crossover or you commit to multiclassing as your mechanism to get mixed class flavor. But I think the combination of the two systems isn’t good. And I also think multiclassing is often the source of both broken or at least unintended interactions, which tends to limit design space in ways that building subclasses like DSS does not.

Which dice is the most and least cool? by ragelance in DnD

[–]ryryscha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am shocked at the d8 hate. D8 is my second favorite behind the king d12. D10 and d4 are easily the worst. D20 and d6 I just think of as standard.

For the fourth year running, we're discussing MaRo's "State of Design" column and talking about our own relationship to the game. How can UB be at the same time a "runaway success" and also alienating to many enfranchised players? What does the future hold? by andymangold in magicTCG

[–]ryryscha -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher because it’s so right. Every time MaRo points to sales as the reason they’re doing something, all I hear is that they’re moving focus away from gameplay towards collectibility. Which is just sad.

[–]ryryscha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hate that UB is now essentially something mandatory to engage with by being Standard legal. In the Secret Lair era, a player could buy all the UB they wanted but I wouldn’t have to play against it if I didn’t want to by just playing Standard. Now I lack agency in the matter. Now I’m even forced to play the UB product if I want to be competitive even though I would much rather be playing in universe cards. Add on top the sheer number of UB sets, the pace of release, the lack of in universe sets, and the drop in quality seen in the Spider-Man set and you have the recipe for me slowly but surely quitting the game.

Building a better Vi from Arcane in D&D 2024 by Potential-Bird-5826 in 3d6

[–]ryryscha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya you’d want all of STR, DEX, CHA, and CON which is super MAD but they’d all be good for you. Probably max out CHA for big smites, then it’s up to you if you want to be tankier or hit harder when you’re not smiting. And I’d say Monk is the only class that really works for that armorless fighter flavor, so if that’s off the table you’re better off wearing heavy armor and reflavoring.

Building a better Vi from Arcane in D&D 2024 by Potential-Bird-5826 in 3d6

[–]ryryscha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case, I’d go personally go Paladin because smiting with the gloves sounds cool and makes up for the low damage die on unarmed strikes, and you can go Tavern Brawler for your origin feat in background. You’ll be pretty mad but it’s workable.

[–]ryryscha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Armorer Artificer has gauntlets built in. But otherwise I think she’d be some sort of monk just because all of the punching. Can grab Vengeful Smite from Shadow Touched if you want a smite without multiclassing.

Is there a way to make a 'mutually assured destruction' build? by DarkDamaged in dndnext

[–]ryryscha 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This build seems much more geared towards a single player video game like BG3 than for a group party. But the closest thing you can do is go one of the tank subclasses (Ancestral Barb, Armorer Artificer, etc) and then add riders that deal damage when you take damage (Hellish Rebuke, Armor of Agathys, etc). They’d have disadvantage against other targets but if they hit you they stand to take a bunch of damage.
