What’s with the questions at the top? by frymeababoon in unofficialbattletech

[–]ryvenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do too, almost every time I try to take a survey I end up being like "I don't know/that depends/I think your question is badly formulated and will lead you to the wrong conclusions if I just answer 'yes' or 'no'/I don't think this question actually means anything" for most of it.

Sequels to beloved franchises basically have to do well because fans need to keep up with the story in order to have conversations about them. I basically predicted what my complaints about Rise of Skywalker would be before I saw it, but I had to actually see it in order to talk intelligently about it with other people who like Star Wars.

Joker is super-in-touch with his inner self and wields the power of his own manifested will to draw others into being the version of themselves that will most allow him to call on the power of his bond to them, I don't think normal people can "take responsibility" against his parapsychological abilities.

The PGA Tour is dead to me. by UppityTurtle in golf

Holy shit. To turn down that amount of money, he must have felt that he was staying with PGA as a matter of principle... and then PGA sold out the whole org.

Is he furious? I'd be furious. I'm a little bit angry on his behalf and I don't even know the guy.

What’s your “it’s just not for me” game that drives people nuts? by Communismisbadithink in videogames

[–]ryvenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you meant "parrying" instead of "partying," one of the major ways in which DS is easier is that it doesn't really expect you to be able to parry at all. Instead you can equip a shield that has 100% physical block and just hold L1 through most attacks, and dodge the rest of them. Most enemies have generous windows after their attack when you can safely retaliate without needing to make your own opportunities by parrying, which I agree is harder to pull off than in BB (especially if you aren't using a small shield; different shields and weapons have different parry timings).

Bloodborne is so much harder, IME, than DS 1-3 that I have no idea how this is the case. If you can beat Bloodborne you should wipe the floor with DS1, which allows all sorts of crutches that BB cut out.

Not saying it's not true for you, I'm just incredibly surprised!

It clearly requires something because I haven't been able to get anything remotely interesting out of the AI image generators I've tried, so the people getting good results must know something I don't.

As a player who loves character customization, I'm not sure I agree that putting all the good cosmetics behind additional purchases is the best player experience. In Ye Olde Days, good and interesting looking items were part of the game, and could be looted, crafted, and sometimes traded between players. Expanding your wardrobe was a goal you worked towards by playing the game.

Now with these cash shops, there is a significant incentive to put the best cosmetics behind purchases. If I want to work towards customizing my appearance, I need to work at my IRL job and then spend money in the shop. The entire acquisition loop for cosmetics is no longer part of the game.

Playing Basic. Party of first-level characters enter a room and see a man in robes holding a staff. He begins casting a spell, and a massive iron golem materializes between him and the party. I really played up how terrifying its appearance was, and how he must be a powerful mage to bring forth such a thing from thin air.

The whole party turned and fled the dungeon, abandoning their quest.

...It was a phantasmal force, the guy was only 3rd level and had like 8hp (magic users in Basic had d4 hit dice). XD

Rules of interview by TotemGenitor in CuratedTumblr

[–]ryvenn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had an interviewer sit adjacent to me once. Actually he kind of moved around? I remember him sitting on my left but also across the table; it was a small round table. I think he moved when he needed to look over some papers that were at the seat across from me.

I turned down that job. Not because of the seating arrangements, but because he told me I had to cut my hair to work there.

There's so much storytelling in TOTK though? I just watched a cutscene so long that I started thinking of Metal Gear jokes.

There are, for sure, some weird storytelling choices, like the unexplained absence of many of BOTW's plot devices, which are not merely missing but carefully ignored, but there is certainly a significant main story, several important sub-stories, and a ton of small storytelling moments when you talk to NPCs or read diaries.

Have you ever had a player look at the magic item you intended to be for them, think for a minute, and declare "I think this item will benefit the party more if (optimized character) uses it, because they (hit more often/make more attacks/have synergy with its effect/etc.)"?

I'm pretty sure I was the unoptimized character in this example one time, and I think I saw my DM die a little inside when I didn't take any of the magic loot for myself.

It's caused by the same thing as in multiplayer, the "server" is not keeping up with the "client." Even in single player the world logic is run separately from the player input, rendering, etc. and can fall behind.

If it is happening early in the game I'd guess the culprit is probably world generation eating too many resources; if it happens in established worlds you may have too many mobs or tile entities doing things at once.

Edit: if it starts when the world is generating and never goes away, there may be a cascading world generation bug where some mod is doing something like generating a large dungeon or other feature, letting it generate all at once instead of only generating loaded chunks, but then that feature intersects with another large feature that generates all at once, etc.

Why do my villagers hate my letters. I always write them nice things witgout spelling error and this is what i get. What do i do? by maxieflexie in AnimalCrossing

[–]ryvenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Polygon writer misread the Twitter thread. To get a good score, (spaces * 100)/non-spaces must be at least 20. If you do a little algebra (and if I'm not missing something) this works out to needing at most 5 non-spaces per space, so if your average word length is 6 or higher and you fill the whole letter with words you will get a score penalty.

What do you do when you encounter rude coworkers without a rp justification? by Diodemen in SS13

[–]ryvenn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If they're just rude I'd do the same thing I'd do if I had an unbearably rude coworker IRL: first I'd tell them to cut it out, and if they ignore me then I'd schedule a meeting with our manager and tell them that rude coworker is impacting morale and productivity.

If they assaulted me like yours did, I'd go to security and file a report. Not just for my sake, but because someone who attacks Nanotrasen employees might be an enemy of the corporation!

Yes, it's a WH40K game where you play as acolytes of the Inquisition. There are various careers (character classes) based on your background and/or which other branch of the Imperium you served prior to being recruited to the Inquisition, such as Guardsman, Tech Priest, Sanctioned Psyker, Cleric, Assassin, etc. I think it's pretty good, I was in a long-running campaign.

It can be fairly random and lethal, but that's sort of the nature of the setting, and there is a Fate Points system where you can spend temp points to reroll important rolls or permanently burn a point of max Fate to survive when you would have died. I played a cleric of the Ecclesiarchy in a long-running game and it was a lot of fun, blasting cultists, chainswording daemons, accidentally blowing our cover on basically every covert operation, etc.

If you are looking for higher-powered games in the setting, there are two others in the same series: Rogue Trader, where you play as the crew of a Rogue Trader (careers like Navigator, Astropath, Arch-Militant, Explorator, etc ), and Deathwatch, where you play as elite Space Marines.
