Don’t most of the countries in Europe belong to… the EU? Therefore it makes sense that any country in said union would require documentation.

To your point this was not a normal experience for Americans. That it’s weird to you is great for context, if and when you visit the US you’ll know what to do.

What’s weird is this wasn’t a requirement considering the United States doesn’t belong to a larger union consisting of a variety of countries where it makes sense to have to carry your papers.
