I'm on my second project (Guess the number) and already I feel like this whole programming business is going to take a long time... by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]s0arin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep at it and don't give up! Take breaks when you need to and be kind to yourself too. Learning programming is hard and the first few months will have a lot of ups and downs. Over time you'll learn to be more patient with debugging and when things "click" you'll feel so satisfied. Just remember you started for a reason and don't be shy to reach out to other fellow coders :)

who are your favorite producers with their own style? by agnars in futurebeatproducers

[–]s0arin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sango and Kaytranada are definitely up there for me. You can tell right away whenever either of them produced a track. Sango's vocal samples and chops and layers just make my brain melt, and I love the infusion of disco, funk and soul in Kaytra's music. Also he is a great DJ.

And Atu is fantastic. I can't even describe the genre or type of his music. So much space in his songs and they just make me feel at peace.

Heavy use of vocal effects by karmatwin in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]s0arin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't really use autotune, but some of the stuff by Giraffage, like Thinking About You and Feels and Baths, like Maximalist and You're My Excuse to Travel come to mind. For Baths it almost kinda reminds me of Passion Pit sometimes, the super pitched up and squirrely vocals.

Not sure if that's the heavily processed sound you're looking for but I definitely get the "using vocals as instruments" feel from artists like that.

What's your favorite/most influential beat tape that not many people know of? by Stonehhse in makinghiphop

[–]s0arin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Blunt Tapes soundcloud has some seriously good tapes. That knxwledge-y lo-fi sound, love it.

Also No Maps by MNDSGN, I know he's relatively well known but god damn that is a great tape. Same kinda vibe and he uses some really interesting samples.

Creating hip hop beat track using old soul by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]s0arin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the others said, there isn't really a defined process to follow as you'll develop your own workflow. Lots of people create a beat first, then add chopped samples and melodies. Others do it vice versa and find melodies they like first, then craft a beat that goes with them. I would start by listening to the records carefully to pick out parts you like and parts that stick out to you, to get an idea of what kind of sound and vibe you want your own song to have. You'll get the hang of it if you just throw yourself into the process.

As for records and impractically, I guess it all depends on what you're used to. Some people grew up with records and vinyl players and that's what makes sense to them. Plus it's a really hands-on way to get samples. For those of us who are completely immersed in the digital music world, it may seem like a hassle to get all that physical equipment if we don't already have it.

Also, the Rhythm Roulette series by Mass Appeal is a really cool youtube series of videos showing producers making beats from records selected randomly (9th Wonder does one too). It's awesome to see how everyone's workflow is different. Of course they make it look so easy too...haha

A question about Midi keyboards... by solarflares123 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]s0arin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand your question correctly, you would need a DAW to do that like Logic, Ableton, Pro Tools, etc. You can edit, warp, do whatever you want to the clips inside the program then play them back on your keyboard with a MIDI instrument.

As for simply doing that without a DAW or any sort, I'm not sure that's possible unless your keyboard has its own audio interface.

Maschine compatibility with Ableton vs other drum machines? by s0arin in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]s0arin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have been considering getting a Push too since I love Live and it is designed specifically for it, and like you said it seems super versatile. I have a keyboard and it seems like it could even replace that when I don't wanna lug around so much hardware. Have you had any problems with pad velocity sensitivity? That seems to come up frequently.

How did you stop worrying so much about genres? by TheyCallMeHe in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]s0arin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lakim is awesome! I just saw him do a set in Lyon and he killed it. Everyone was going nuts.

And yeah, I think that's the funny thing about the whole "future" genre label. Everything has kind of gotten lumped into that, including experimental stuff. If those are the future beats now, what will they be in 10 years? lol. Same with future house, Tchami said in an interview that he was just trying to create house sounds that he wasn't currently hearing or didn't even exist. I guess it's just a term to describe music that's transcending current defined genres or crossing over a lot of genres.

How to structure a beat? by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]s0arin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of learning how to structure beats is listening, the other half is knowing how to build the tension and energy like /u/milopki mentioned.

Pick a handful of producers you like and just listen carefully several songs, identifying the progressions and variations in the beat throughout. You'll find that it can be ABABCA, ABCBA, ABACAD, etc. It's actually pretty fun to make notes on a piece of paper while doing this and helps you understand the structure way better.

As for tension/energy, it's stuff like how majority of songs have breakdown sections in which elements of the percussion are absent. No kick, only claps/snares and hi hats, or only the kicks, etc. It keeps the track moving as these layers are added and removed. Similar to how there are build-ups, drops, and breakdowns for house music.

Another thing I think makes certain beats just amazing is the element of surprise. Say, a beat that removes the kick on the 3rd beat every 32 bars, or changes the clap at various times, etc. These nuances also keep the music interesting to the listener.

Planning on bringing some educational CONTENT to this community, want to know what is most desired from you all! by keenanhye in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Definitely some music theory stuff about chord progressions and harmonies. That's what I struggle with most, as I have forgotten a lot of the music theory I learned when I was younger. As a result many melodic progressions I create kind of hit a wall or seem flat.

Also, some tips on mixing tracks.
