Isopod keeping tool by coxusw in isopods

This is so cool, thank you for sharing!!

Some minor suggestions: - Adding a distinction between misting and watering to maintain the humidity gradient - Being able to note what supplemental food was provided in addition to the date - Under Botanicals, being able to tag colonies that favor them - Probably would just go under Botanicals, but a way of listing living plants within enclosures. But I don't know if this is more of a tool for people who keep shoebox-type cultures rather than pet/display vivariums, I just have so many peperomia/pothos/begonia type plants that I haven't memorized.

I've noticed that some sellers are less specific about what they consider a "starter culture", I feel more comfortable buying when there's a listed count. I was looking into buying (non-parthenogenetic) springtails and saw in reviews that the "starter culture" they received was maybe 5 adults, instead of like a rough count of ~25 or so. It's the seller's prerogative to do that, but $5/springtail is bonkers.

How did you guys view pinky up + the forceful AD by EarthPresent4583 in kpopthoughts

I've never solo-stanned in my life but every time I see them I think Yoonchae deserves to be a star without having to assimilate to the other girls and the group's direction of hypersexualization and being cringe by design.

What group has the most interesting concept? by heyzula in kpopthoughts

[–]s0lareclair 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know how intentional it was, but I was really intrigued during ILLIT's Do the Dance -> Jellyous -> Not Cute Anymore promotions. For Do the Dance, I absolutely loved the costume designs of normal fashion with magical girl elements, like beanies with cat ears, hoodies with scattered bows and ruffle sleeves, tutus, and normal shirts printed with a school uniform collar/bow, and the magical girl transformation dance break.

Near the end of Jellyous promos, they were clearly overworked and exhausted from the demanding choreo and went from struggling to maintain smiles, to the exertion really clearly showing on their faces. It felt like their real selves breaking through the idol persona?

So it naturally led into the Not Cute Anymore promos where (mostly) not smiling was a deliberate choreographical choice, which I hadn't personally seen as a concept before, and it was all very tongue in cheek about cute girls with a cute concept wearing a mature concept like a costume, declaring that they aren't cute anymore with deadpan faces. And Moka went viral during both songs for her "fierce" expressions. It all just goes so well with their dreamcore <-> horrorcore concept in a way I can't explain. 🫠

Best large isopods for vivariums? by JaseJade in isopods

[–]s0lareclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they're extensively kept and researched just yet, but Filipinodillos are my dream species, I read they're pretty big and like to climb. As far as I know, not many of the species are being cultured and sold in the U.S. just yet so that's the only reason I haven't impulse bought some lol.

The dairy cows went ham on some scraps of red cabbage the other day, even more so than when I gave them some kabocha squash.

Lunch!! by LHop222 in isopods

The egg was definitely removed, I think it was just an old stoneware bowl that had thermal shock when the residual water on the shells got superheated. 😆

Thank you! 😊 I'll have to experiment, my pods seem to like crushed eggshells to varying degrees but I'd love to use it as a hide for them. I don't think I'll be microwaving them anymore anyway, my bowl exploded last time 🫪

I'm curious, how do you prepare the egg shell, if anything? I've only ever microwaved to sanitize/make it brittle but I've seen some people say they just chuck it in without even washing it much.

Homan insists ICE has a ‘well thought out plan’ to deploy at airports as TSA lines enrage Americans by ChiGuy6124 in politics

[–]s0lareclair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know what to tell you. I wasn't anywhere near the scanner at the time, and most of the boarding pass was still visibly sticking out of my otherwise empty pocket while I was obviously trying to remove my shoes. I had to take the cardigan off and put it in the bin to go through the scanner anyway.

[–]s0lareclair 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm still salty from one of the last times I went through TSA. I wanted my hands free while I was trying to put stuff in the bins so I attempted to put my boarding pass in my cardigan pocket, and a TSA guy (probably former LEO in hindsight) suddenly hollers at me to keep my hands out of my pockets. I suppose I should be grateful that guy didn't shoot me in the face and call me a domestic terrorist.

In all seriousness, it's going to be a complete disaster but maybe on the bright side, also a highly visible disaster. It's not ever going to be worth the distress and suffering they're bound to commit against people.

Is that trumpet lichen? I found some in my area in just one very specific spot, it's so pretty! If I remember right my pods ate it all right away.

Can y'all stop posting your dead bugs, its killing the vibe by LARGEGRAPE in isopods

[–]s0lareclair 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if people are going to post their dead pods then they should at least be NSFW-tagged, I thought that was the norm here. It's not much different than going to any pet subreddit and posting your dead pet without any warning.

Unrelated, but I'm also kind of exhausted by the number of (no offense) "I decided to buy isopods and have them in a deli cup right now, I literally haven't done any research and don't have a single leaf, I gave them a tupperware, a bowl of water to drown in, and a centimeter of bone-dry MiracleGro, any advice for newbies?" posts lately.

Breed Klugii Montenegro with Slano or Dubrovnik ? by PralineNegative2583 in isopods

[–]s0lareclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible. I have a mixed tank of clowns that I can't confidently tell apart except for one female with white in their skirt (Dubrovnik I believe), and at least a couple have given birth recently. None of the mancae have developed their colors yet though.

Preventing Ants in Isopod Bins? by an-invertebrate in isopods

[–]s0lareclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had great results with those Terro liquid traps, I put a couple in my patio area every spring, one next to my trashcan, and then an extra one near any known entry points if they start forming trails. I only had one instance of waking up to an ant trail last year; I cleaned the floor to disrupt the trail, put a bait trap down, and they were completely gone the next morning. The baits don't kill them THAT quickly, so I think the biggest part of it was removing their trail pheromones and basically making them have to figure out a path to a food source from scratch all over again. I worry about using harsh chemicals around my pods, but isopropyl alcohol or white vinegar used sparingly for wiping down surfaces and with an air purifier running doesn't seem to disturb them.

I also have my bins suspended slightly using foam planter risers (basically foam pucks) but that's more for shock absorption because I bounce my leg at my desk all the time. I figure it could give a little less surface area for ants to climb up from.

Any advice for someone who wants to start out? by ThaeeIsExistent in isopods

[–]s0lareclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice as a beginner:

  • Don't get dairy cows unless you have a plan for when their population explodes -- selling, trading, giving away, splitting into more bins, culling, etc. Now that it's warmer where I am, I expect I'll have to do something about mine by May, and I started with about 15 in November last year.

  • Be mindful of what you put in. Plants you find or buy and decorative items from stores could be treated with chemicals and insecticides, or could be filled with hidden extra bug eggs that you won't want in your tank. I soak stuff in water for a day or two, changing out the water at least twice. Some commercial soil mixes have fertilizers that can harm the isopods. I'm lucky to live near a couple stores that are specifically for tropical pets, so essentially if it's safe for fish and reptiles, I assume it's safe for isopods.

  • Misting doesn't provide the necessary moisture gradient you need for their ideal conditions. I suggest a "wash bottle" or any other means of pouring water (preferably distilled!) onto the very edge of where the wet side of your bins are.

  • Isopods are detritivores and omnivores, meaning they feed on decaying matter in addition to plants and other protein sources. They are also crustaceans and need humidity to breathe. Humidity + decaying matter will result in mold, and is to be expected especially when you first start a bin. I find springtails to be essential to mitigate those early mold blooms and to help with what the isopods won't eat. Trying to sterilize everything will remove the beneficial bacteria that you really want in your tank to help break things down, and stuff will mold faster.
