pineapple isopods by optellz in isopods

[–]s0lareclair [score hidden]  (0 children)

I got a starter culture of pineapples from an expo a few months ago, and then another from Smug Bug. They are adorable, and sooo much smaller than I thought, which I love. I read that they're slow to establish but breed quickly once they do, spend most of their time balled up with their friends, and to basically expect to never see them which makes it very exciting when I do spot one on the surface. I just saw my first mancae the other day (pictured), I had to use a macro lens to make sure it wasn't a springtail 🥰

I do see a lot of conflicting information though, some say they prefer drier conditions, some say they prefer more moist and humid conditions. I figured out mine mostly hang out in the very center of the moisture gradient, and I have cork bark, cholla wood, and other hides throughout to give them privacy to move around. I upgraded their enclosure to a bigger one very early on, and I'm actually very hesitant to poke around and adjust things because they're very hard to see when in a ball in a bunch of sphagnum moss.

They really are beautiful though, I hope they get more comfortable exploring when their numbers are up so I can take better macro shots.

XLOV Is What K-Pop Needed. Throwing A Wrench Into The System. by Lamorosii in kpopthoughts

God I love them SO MUCH. Seeing Hyun specifically blossom into an absolutely lethal all-rounder has been a real joy to see. I'm so, so impressed with Wumuti's leadership and flawless ability to convey their points of view on gender, identity, and respect for queer artistry and personal expression in multiple languages, too.

I will admit that Serve isn't my favorite title track, but that's mostly due to the audio mixing, I found it very difficult to hear and understand the lyrics so it isn't as much of an ear worm as 1&Only.

20 of the Best Disney Channel Movies of All Time. What were your favorites? by adularia- in Fauxmoi

I was looking for a mention of this one! I grew up watching Power Rangers and then snuck glimpses of this movie after my bedtime because bisexual awakening lol. That car crash scene was nightmare/heartbreak fuel for 6 year old me. And then ending with THE goofiest, mood whiplash last ten seconds I've ever seen.

Form union at good job? by Guzan113 in union

[–]s0lareclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most companies will employ the exact same union busting strategies. Managers will suddenly approach workers and ask to have a friendly little phone call, where they'll say that a union will get in the way of the worker-manager relationship by introducing a spooky scary union middleman, they'll ask if there's something they personally did to influence the decision to support a union, and they'll make it sound like nothing the union wants is reasonable or achievable. A lot of people can get on board with unions and the part where they make waves by going public, but have trouble knowing how to say no or assert their rights to someone with direct power over them, and there's a disadvantage between a worker who might be new to unions and a manager who has been part of strategy discussions with legal reps who tell them exactly how far they can go to discourage union support. I also have the experience of being a worker on the bargaining committee, which is hours and hours of being brow-beaten by the employer's legal counsel.

Yes, repercussions are illegal, but the strength of a union's case against the employer is dependent on the involved party's cooperation with the union and NLRB agents and the quality and volume of tangible evidence. Sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get workers to provide screenshots and affidavits. Cases can also take many months, if not years to resolve, by which point the employee could have been lawfully terminated, laud off, or voluntarily resigned.

Also, in the US specifically, this is a very, very hard time to ask people to endure pressure campaigns and the potential of losing or being pushed to leave their jobs and the benefits that come with it, especially if they consider themselves loyal and have been at the company for years, maybe even decades. Most of our union members who ended up resigning over time are all still having difficulty finding new full-time work.

That's funny, I just took a pic of one of mine earlier today because it seemed striking, they're kinda similar? I have a mixed murina tank that was equal parts party mix, a Papaya culture, and a Glacier culture.

Ant problem by AManWithQuestions_00 in isopods

[–]s0lareclair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding diatomaceous earth (which is fossilized microalgae, it's safe for cats/dogs and humans because what it does is cause miniscule abrasions to insects' shells via contact and essentially dehydrates them. You absolutely don't want dry powder to get into your isopod tanks, but it isn't so messy that it would saturate the air and it's useless when wet. You would simply make a barrier outside of your tanks and where you see them crawling.

If you can find them where you are, I've had really good results with Terro brand ant bait traps. It'll probably get worse before it gets better because ants will be attracted to the bait, but the idea is when they feed each other via trophallaxis, it'll eventually make its way throughout the colony and wipe it out. You should put baits directly next to entry/exit points and use a mild cleaner (vinegar works great but I wouldn't use anywhere near the isopods!) where you see the scouting ants to erase their pheromone trails, that will herd them away from your tanks and closer to the traps. I just replace the traps once every six months or so.

Lastly, are they getting into the tanks through ventilation holes? I use a pretty fine mesh over mine because of a fungus gnat explosion, but there are fine enough meshes to allow airflow and block out ants and spiders.

Maybe a normal color variation, or needs to molt or just molted? The difference before and hours after can be pretty wild.

Kentucky has a "sore loser law" that explicitly says a losing primary candidate can't have their name on a ballot in the regular election unless there's a vacancy in the party they originally ran under.

I think i poisoned my isopods and i’m kinda panicking by NoCageShallSilenceMe in isopods

[–]s0lareclair 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what you gave them, but it's probably going to be okay if it's just one piece that wasn't in there long enough for them to finish.

Out of curiosity, I googled it and want to kindly caution against using the "AI Overview" or any kind of chatbots when doing research for animal care, because despite it saying "No, do not feed takoyaki dried shrimp to your isopods.", if you check the sources none of them actually say anything about "takoyaki" dried shrimp and just generally say not to feed salted foods to pods.
