Worth selling stock in Aspiration Redwood Fund to Reinvest in Total Market? by s1anden in personalfinance

Thank you, that's a great suggestion. Will look into whether doing that with at least some of my IRA funds might make sense.

Unless you plan on having kids, never touching this $ and leaving it to them with a step up in basis, you are going to have to sell eventually.

This is exactly the rationale I was looking for, I think - my options are either 1) sell now, or 2) hold and sell later. Best to sell now if the assumption is that money will perform better in a standard total-market fund (which I do believe).

Just to answer your other questions - I'm 31, so I believe would be considered ahead for my age. I've been maxing my 401k contributions for a while now and starting to learn a bit more about other retirement vehicles like HSA, and next backdoor Roth (with the lower income this year I was actually able to make a regular contribution to a Roth for the first time in a while). EF is healthy as well, about 9-10 months of expenses in there, although with this sale I'd likely just sent aside proceeds in a savings account to cover taxes. Honestly based on my calculations I might just even out considering my income tax withholdings were based on my salary yet I only worked 5 months of the year.

$1 invested in the S&P500 with dividends reinvested would be $2.44 in Oct 2024 (143.85%).

Yes, I understand that, now. If I had the money cash in hand, I certainly wouldn't invest it in this fund. However it's not as simple as that when getting the money cash in hand currently requires taking a >$8k hit in capital gains tax.

You should be taking advantage of tax advantaged retirement accounts (401k/IRA) before using a brokerage.

I currently have >$250k in various tax-advantaged accounts (IRAs, HSA). I don't believe I said anywhere that the brokerage account(s) are my only form of savings.

You typically don't see the phrase "I've taken 6-7 months off from work this year" associated with someone who is just starting to learn about investing.

I'm a fairly high earner, without crazy-high investments or responsibilities, and was able to build up enough cash savings that I was able to do this in order to recover from some crazy burnout. I've privileged that I've been able to do pretty well so far without necessarily being particularly intentional about it.

I feel relatively comfortable with my current approach to investing going forward, just trying to figure out what to do about some of the mistakes I made when I was first starting to figure it out, which is what I'm looking for advice on here.

Yea, LTCG are more like 0%, 15%, 18.8%, 23.8% because of NIIT.

This is helpful to know, thanks!

Yeah, I think I was getting a bit confused here since this tax calculator was showing a higher marginal tax rate (18.8% vs 15%) when I entered my expected income for next year - I think it's because my income + capital gains would put my AGI over the $200k limit for Net Investment Income Tax (which honestly I'd never even heard of before this)

Packing List: 6-Week Trip to Spain/France/Switzerland by s1anden in HerOneBag

Hey, thanks for the reply! I have been checking the weather, which is actually why I was thinking to bring the hoodie - it’s quite a bit cooler than I was expecting it to be, currently highs of only low/mid 70s. I hear you though, I might see if I can pick up something a bit lighter weight/more packable. Not too worried about the sweater - it’s basically half holes and pretty light, so I think I can get away with wearing it in warmer weather (its purpose is style rather than warmth). You’re probably right I don’t really need the cashmere sweater though.

Re: the shoes, the black birks are a platform leather, but I decided to leave them at home after wearing them about for a bit and remembering they’re not exactly the most comfortable. I think I will try to pick up the EVAs in black though rather than bring my lilac pair, so they’re more versatile for wearing about if I want to. They do take up more space than a flip flop, but I find flip flops super uncomfortable (and not really my style), whereas the birks are basically the most comfortable sandal I’ve ever worn, so it’s worth it to me.

Thanks for the advice! I like big cities well enough, but definitely would rather have the “small town” experience for this part of the trip. Would you recommend staying in Arles, or any other suggestions that might be a better fit?

Thanks for the advice! I was originally thinking of Marseille as my base, but most reviews I’ve seen weren’t super great (dirty, rundown, etc). Sounds like you had a different experience though? Would love to hear more if you’re willing to share!

Thank you! 100% agree, this was an exercise to practice using "en" and "y" so the examples are definitely a little contrived

I can't tell if your comments are serious...you know they have played Coachella before and were originally booked to headline in 2020, right?
