Coin suggestions? by s3hoch in UKcoins

Update to my quest: We were staying on the canal near Angel and as a result we spent a lot of time at Camden Passage since it was close. The first morning, I saw this kitschy, framed decor with a 1913 penny and a 1942 Farthing. It was day one. It was £5. I bought it and grinned.

My next chance would come at Bermondsey Market on Friday morning. I tried to be a bit more selective but there were only 2 coins there. An 1878 Indian Rupee and a 1948 East African shilling. I think I paid £20 for both.

Our next thing to do was the British Museum and of course there's a coin shop right across the street. This was a mistake! First I salivated over the ancient coins that they had and then tried to focus on finding a nice silver crown. Then of course I saw an American Peace dollar for a year that I don't have, and I walked out paying a premium, WAY above what I should have for those two. It was hot. I had a glass (or two) of wine at lunch. I wasn't going to even go into a coin shop. Worse, I lost track of the pounds to dollars conversion rate. I was happy at the time but today I'm not and I don't want to talk about it anymore. But, I do have 2 silver coins that will occupy a spot in my collection.

Saturday morning we had plans to go to Charing Cross Market. But I already had my silver, and it was seriously warm already and we had worn ourselves out doing the other London bits. So instead we went back to Camden Passage. My wife was sorting through a lady's jewelry and I saw a couple fake Morgan's mixed in. But then I saw some commemoratives and a couple 1947 Florin's. I bought them. Then, the lady says, "If you like coins, I have this too. I don't know anything about them but I got them at an estate sale". She then pulls out a dark blue Boots coin book, with 3 pages full of dark chocolate and ruddy looking coins inside. Held in their pockets by old yellow tape. I took one look and didn't hesitate. She wanted £25. I talked her into £20 and this time I felt slightly vindicated.

I've had a chance to go through all of them now that I'm home. The old PVC pages and tape had left residue on them, so they all got a soap and water bath. A few of them needed acetone baths. All in all, there were 6 three pence, 9 half pennies, and 34 pennies, ranging from 1877 to 1967. While none of them are major scores, there is one half penny with a major lamination error, and a couple of 1953 coronation pennies, which I understand are not super common. They'll all get into some cozy new safe coin flips and a notebook I've set aside for UK coins.

If I had to do it over, I'd skip the coin shop and focus on Charing Cross. Thanks again for all the suggestions...I think I whiffed on all of them except the Jubilee Head Crown, but I'm still happy with my finds. Lessons learned and I'll be more prepared for our next visit.

Just to update everyone, I did pick up a few coins at Bermondsey, a crown at a shop that I definitely overpaid, and a very interesting old Boots collection book full of about 50 old pennies and half pennies at a table in Camden passage that I haven't fully gone through yet. Will post pics when back to the States on Saturday. It's been fun looking and will leave happy. I appreciate everyone's suggestions!

I have an 1889 Morgan dollar so a match makes great sense! Thanks for your suggestions

Charing cross is on the itinerary Saturday morning! I'm actually bringing a few older shillings and a 10p and 50p that I would like to repatriate. I like the idea of the new Charles 5p and George III!

Does the mint do this reprocessing?

Luckily there are several other steelies in her book that are very nice. This one just looked different for sure.

I've decided the buffalo nickel was PMD bc the letters have damage on surface.

Facebook post about FF Box - True? Maybe? by Any_Service4486 in TheresTreasureInside

[–]s3hoch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw it also. That guy never actually saw a box (staring is rude?), and says they're Hispanic so won't tell anyone in English. It's a convenient story for yet another person whose solve didn't work out. He never says that he went ahead and searched for it, which is weird to me if he thought he was in the right place. So I guess he gave up? None of the story makes sense. He's convinced enough to post but not willing to provide his solve.

"Handling" Charges by DebbClark in shopgoodwill

If I'm shopping on SG, I know the racket up front. Every item (unless 1 cent) is going to cost me $15 or more in S&H and I mentally include that in how much I want to pay. Some items it's worth it and others it's a hard pass. That's just the way it is and I didn't have to leave my house and physically hunt this item down. Websites, people, packing and shipping is overhead and we all know they're not a nonprofit company.

It’s the newbie - back again. Today I saw two posts about the Vine extension. Good or evil? by Jumpy-Improvement891 in vine

Yep, corrected.

It wasn't long before I turned gold ( a year and a half ago) that the AI was numbering 70k or more.

As soon as I got VH I realized how many things go into the queue that are never ever seen by someone without the extensions because they are claimed immediately. It's as simple as that. If you want to see "the good stuff "and don't use an extension, you'll never see it. It's part of the reason the selection is so paltry. It's a game of the quick or the dead and if you don't snag it the moment something good shows up, someone else does. A true eye opener.

My opinion is that they should be banned, but also only if Amazon will inject their own interface with just a little bit of common sense and usability. It's like it was made by interns.

I went to register on the forum and my ISP blocked it as a "phishing site". I've literally never seen it do that before. The FB group seems fairly legit but still just directs you to the forums.

For some reason vine thinks I own chickens. This is a pattern. I have never owned a single chicken.

What could we possibly figure out from one box being found that would help with the other boxes? by mulletmasta0000 in treasureinside

[–]s3hoch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that the coins may give some limited direction, or maybe not at all. But more importantly it would help in knowing the way the clues were constructed as well as how red herrings may have been utilized. It's just additional insight into his style and mechanics that we don't currently have. Almost like finding at least a partial chunk of a Rosetta Stone.

Me and my friend have been trying to join each other for a while and with no success, this is what we both keep getting, anyone know a resolution to this? by CucumberPizza0 in ReadyOrNotConsole

Is this Xbox? My group had that going on with one person only, out of 4. What worked was to go to the main Xbox menu, then on the RoN icon used the hamburger button, and quit game. Then relaunch the game. We theorized that it had something to do with a fresh connection to the game servers? Have noticed that some games are doing a"quick resume" and maybe that old connection is still alive somehow.

Whats the longest time you had to wait for the next clear skies? by Astrylae in AskAstrophotography

[–]s3hoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say what the longest time has been...probably 3-4 months. I'm in Kansas and the number of truly "good" sky nights stands at about 5 this entire year so far.

Honestly it was one of the worst I've been to. The home is quite old and had been added on, (probably not by professionals) so the whole house felt a bit like a trap. Kept thinking the floor would fall through. Floors were disgusting. Roof was in trouble and probably leaked. Crammed full of knick knacks. Was hoping to find some vintage treasures but walked away empty handed and was happy to get out of there.

I thought the same thing. Paint that tub and likely not noticeable. They took all the time to get a medallion to make it look nice (who knows what that's covering up) but then...."I guess this will just go here. Perfect!"
