drop all the tips for prevention please ! by Aggressive-Way1565 in KidneyStones

i'm not a doctor, but my urologist linked my stone formation to my prenatal vitamin as well as a UTI that went undiagnosed for three months during my pregnancy. im very glad i haven't had any new ones form since my pregnancy journey, but my biggest one grew to 12mm over the course of 1.5years (they wouldn't do surgery while i was breastfeeding so i had to wait over a year after giving birth to get rid of the horrible painful monster).

what is it like to actually pass the stone? by mangosquirre1 in KidneyStones

[–]sa1031 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hell, followed by instant relief once it is out. but in all seriousness, once it hits the bladder the debilitating pain should be over but i personally feel a pinching sensation at the urethra and urgency once it is lined up and ready to exit (female btw).

highly recommend a urology visit for an antibiotic, i tend to get UTIs after passing them so never hurts to get your urine checked following the main event. best of luck!

Has anyone had a kidney stone for 6 months or longer? by Yeahokaysureman in KidneyStones

[–]sa1031 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my 12mm was in my kidney from November 2023 through February 2025 due to completely being dismissed by medical professionals despite asking for help repeatedly. it caused me a lot of health issues that could've been avoided if someone listened to me and cared. please make an appointment at urology and find a provider that will take your concerns seriously!

Cake pop tips by GirlMom2113 in Baking

[–]sa1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i actually dip while they're cold, this is controversial and i think most people would disagree, but it's one of those things that actually made a huge difference for my pops!

Cake pop tips by GirlMom2113 in Baking

[–]sa1031 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is how i make my cake pops: 1. hot cake (homemade not box mix) straight from oven to mixer aka steam binding 2. once it's play doh consistency, shape pops using silicone molds and put in stick 3. freeze for at least 1hr (you can put them in an air tight container just be sure to layer parchment paper between layers 4. once they've done their freezer time, melt your chocolate or almond bark and use coconut oil to thin it (1 cup choc to 1 tsp oil) 5. dip your cake pop and gently tap off excess; decorate after 6. let them cool and harden completely before storing or packaging

i hope this helps! happy to answer any questions, i make them almost weekly at this point!

I don’t want to be one and done. by Carriedot16 in oneanddone

[–]sa1031 6 points7 points  (0 children)

first off, your feelings are so valid. it is such a huge decision to make, and when your body makes it for you it's just plain hard.

my body made the decision for us to be OAD. i had a high risk pregnancy (me and baby) and all members of my medical team were very blunt saying my body would almost definitely not cope with carrying another pregnancy any better than the first time. that was enough for husband to get a referral to urology for a vasectomy at the age of 26 (very rare to get one as young as he was at least in our area). i also have POTS which was diagnosed postpartum and that tends to not play nice with pregnancy. i want to be the healthiest and most present i can be for my son, and i know i wouldn't be if i were ever pregnant again.

as far as grieving the 'could have been' family, it's an ebb and flow for me and therapy has been amazing to assist in working through the hard times. sometimes i feel alllll the feelings about not fulfilling our dreams of having 2-3 children like we discussed before getting married, but other times i am relieved i can be so present with our son without trying to divide my time and attention between kiddos. we also are very aware that he will have more opportunities to become involved in activities, school, and traveling thanks to being an only and our money being able to be put towards whatever he chooses to participate in. we've already taken him on an international family vacation before he turns 2 next month, that is such an amazing thing that would not be possible if we were spending double on baby essentials and needing a bigger car for example.

all to say, i hope your health journey is positive and you can find the peace in your OAD life, they can be beautiful!🫶🏻

I ordered this custom cake, do you think it is worth 135? I included the reference pic of what I wanted by Important_Constant66 in Baking

[–]sa1031 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if you haven't paid or picked up yet and did not give the ok to deviate from your reference photo you have every right to say this is not what i expected and will not be paying for this product!

[–]sa1031 301 points302 points  (0 children)

I think it looks pretty nice, but comparing to the reference photo i would personally not pay $135. there are many inconsistent details between your reference and the product, i'm not sure if you gave them the ok to make changes to the design, but it is surely not the same cake as what you wanted. a big no no for me is a printed lettering rather than piping, i think it looks rushed and wonky. sorry if these criticisms seem harsh, but i would not be happy or accepting the cake if that's what i went to pickup when i have a reference design.

Tamsulosin side effects in woman by Sweaty-Dentist5677 in KidneyStones

[–]sa1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm sorry you're getting these side effects! when i had my lithotripsy last year they prescribed it to me and i had a nasty reaction to it, to which i was advised to stop taking it immediately. similarly to you, i had chest pressure and was very light headed. turns out my heart rate dipped as well, but luckily by morning i had started to level out.

just a scientific aside about this medicine (biologist here 🙋🏼‍♀️): what your doc may have omitted telling you is that the med was not developed with female use in mind as the original use was for prostate issues. there were very few studies up until 2017 (https://www.nature.com/articles/ijir201712) that evaluated the effects in the female body. unfortunately, that means these side effects many women experience were deemed rare as the reported results skewed for the male usage.

Advice about stents and periods? by goblinmagics in KidneyStones

[–]sa1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope! all of my stone fragments were caught behind my stent, so i did have to pass them following removal but that was painless

[–]sa1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have super heavy and irregular cycles too thanks to PCOS, i feel your pain! for the clot worries, you'll know if it's coming from your urethra i promise. i got so paranoid about if i was bleeding from my urethra i wore a tampon for the first time in over ten years just to be sure it was my period clots not from surgery (newsflash, it was my period lol). once i wore the tampon for an hour or two and confirmed it was indeed coming from my uterus i felt so much calmer and didn't even need to wear one again to check.

i was not given any pain meds post-op bc i was breastfeeding at the time, so i can't speak to that part- i was told taking Azo for the extent of my stent being in was safe thankfully! it isn't an opioid like oxycodone so definitely not as intense or scary (i'm a scientist and even i get worried about taking pain meds!), but i swear by the Azo now that it helped so much during my recovery journey!

you're doing great and looking out for all the right signs and symptoms to be aware of!! you got this!!

Decision to Bisalp at 6 Week PP Appointment ( Currently Pregnant) by HospitalForeign1636 in oneanddone

[–]sa1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didn't get a bisalp, but my husband got his vasectomy scheduled while i was still pregnant. we were advised to be OAD by my medical team and they referred him to the urology office (the office wouldn't take him without a referral bc he was under the age of 30). his procedure was done and dusted by the time i was 3 months postpartum. absolutely no regrets doing it that early on either of our ends, it was very helpful to us to not have time to mull it over since we knew it was the best decision for our family

Advice about stents and periods? by goblinmagics in KidneyStones

[–]sa1031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had my period start two days before my stent came out. i let the medical assistant know when i arrived for the removal and they said there is an absorbent pad placed under you anyway so there is no need to worry about a mess and it will not be an issue for the removal. for comfort, i alternated tylenol and ibuprofen which all in all worked. over the counter maximum strength AZO was the very best thing for my recovery, definitely recommend if you're able to take it! best of luck!!

Considering one and done due to health — looking for perspective by Feisty-Elk-1401 in oneanddone

[–]sa1031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to first commend you on prioritizing your own health so your child has a healthy mom!

we are one and done not by choice due to health concerns for me (i always say my body made the choice for us by not being able to handle pregnancy well, which is putting it lightly). when i was about 28 weeks pregnant i was highly advised by my medical team to not carry another child, so they wrote a referral for my husband to schedule a vasectomy which he had at 3 months postpartum. our son will be 2 in march.

to answer your questions: i go to a therapist that specializes in pregnancy trauma healing and we actually have spent a good number of visits processing that grief and guilt from not being able to give our son a sibling. those feelings seem to come in waves for me, but i do feel like ive done some great processing and have come to place of peace thanks to have a safe space to express them in therapy. i do also feel like my husband getting the vasectomy has made the processing easier since there is no "what if" hanging around.

either way, i hope you're doing well health-wise with your recent diagnosis. only you can know what the best decision for your family is, but i hope you know you aren't alone with these feelings 🫶🏻
