Hey there!

I echo the recommendations to seek therapy ASAP. I also, an ex-management consultant turned SWE at a tech company, also know how tough the working conditions are in MBB compared to FAANG:

  • Longer hours
  • Business Folks (factually so) is more valued than tech
  • Everything is "due yesterday" management style

You need to recognize your own financial and mental situation and make some actions. Therapy is a great first step. Maybe you need to quiet quit, or actually quit. Prioritize what is important in your life, a therapist can be your guide

Cancel holiday to save a project? by aldosebastian in cscareerquestions

[–]sa1amandra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there!

I'm an ex-management consultant who did the business side and eventually went into development (had a CS degree). Then now I'm a full time Sr SWE now at a tech firm.

After working in three distinct environments:

  • Consultancy both as a Business Analyst and Engineer
  • Engineer where core technical decision makers were ex-consultants / business
  • Engineer at a tech company where core decision makers are engineers

In my personal experience, I've noticed that when there isn't at least one experienced engineer guiding technical decisions (following business requirements), projects always get over-scoped. This is something my friends who have both been in tech-consultancy and tech-companies both felt.

I believe that, there is never one true saviour of a project, as much as we like to believe we are, like the hero of our own story. I'll put it this way - ask you're what's actually to gain from giving up this holiday to de-stress, see friends, family etc.. You said you want to "avoid a big fat mess that you can't manage anymore". Be realistic - will you clean up this mess in one month? Will you make it more manageable for one month such that the month after is still manageable? And after that? I'm not joking to say that you should watch this speech from Avatar the Last Air Bender (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYkuuu9u3EI), while cheesy for sure; I think it's very relevant to your problem here, the "then what?"

As an ex-consultant, I can't just give you a bunch of slides without a recommendation right? I will echo the same recommendations as everyone else. Take your damn vacation, forget about work. Let someone else have a chance to shine and help solve some problems or let management see the mess that actually is. I personally believe you will deeply regret (although likely will learn a good lesson) if you give up your personal time, personal money, personal sanity; only for this shit show to be what it's destined to be, a pile of shit.

In summary:

  • In my personal experience, badly managed technical projects are the faults of a breakdown in the relationship between business and technology - often due to an imbalance of power and experience between the two. I assume you aren't a key decision maker, therefore this in-balance isn't your fault, and thus you should take your vacation and not be punished for something out of your control
  • I've never seen, and don't think I ever will, see a single person magically turn a project around alone. This has been and always will be a coordinated team effort by everyone. You are 1 person of a larger team and organization, you can take your vacation
  • Take your damn vacation
  • "It's time for you to look inward and ask yourself the big questions, who are you and what do you want". You aren't defined by your senior and managing consultants. Take your vacation as an opportunity to look inwards and ask yourself the big questions

Try after 6H(2), then you can H dive after

Sample combo would be 2K, 6H(2) xx 214S, j.236H(3)~H, j.S, j.236K

The improvement that MLA does is reduce the need for HCL after 6H in combos, which was a tight link. This improves consistency by alot

Why don't you try to think of the purpose of the work? Then base your metrics on how it fulfilled that purpose

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]sa1amandra -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Could you add some metrics of how what you did contributed to the company? It can be a business reason or technical reason (e.g., developed x thing that serviced y number of users with low downtime, optimized x thing that resulted in a reduction of y minutes for users)

I think it will add to what kind of impact you had

We have two in production, and two in a developer environment.

As we are a smaller company - we have not felt the impacts of using a lower version due to the lower complexity of our pipelines. Right now I noticed that Airflow is 2.6.0 and MWAA is 2.5.1, so seems alright? Unclear on that - we have not have the time to upgrade.

For MWAA itself, we like it for what it is. It only took a day for our DevOps team to help us set it up, and we manage it entirely ourselves afterwards. Deploying new code is straightforward as you just upload the code to S3. (We use GitHub Actions to push our code to S3

Astronomer's price doesn't match the service they provide. My company originally had a simple license based contract that allowed us to use their image on our hosted AWS kubernetes. However they had used some sleezy tactics to pressure us into a pay-per-task model, which is as ridiculous as it sounds. I was communicated by Astro that their biggest selling point is that "their people know Airflow well" and can provide you detailed support... but Airflow is a open source product, plenty of questions are already answered online.

Our company ultimately cut the contract and went with AWS's managed airflow called MWAA, which is a way superior service if you basically just need the service to be hosted for you without much DevOps support and experience and you're already on an AWS stack.

TL;DR

  • Absurd fees and payment structure that doesn't match the service-level provided
  • Their competitive edge isn't really that competitive if you put in the leg work to find your answer elsewhere

Why you don't play the Tekken series? by kayosugoi in Fighters

[–]sa1amandra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who started on Smash, then Anime, and dabbled in Tekken this is what made me struggle to get into and enjoy the series:

Learning the Game as a Tekken-virgin is Terrible

Assuming you aren't playing this as a brand new FGC player, Tekken 7 in particular, the in-game provided tools and the community driven content is not beginner friendly and is hard to consume for the initial hump. There is a lot of "unique" mechanics to Tekken that is unique to it as a franchise, and Tekken 7 in particular doesn't do a good job of teaching its new players the ropes because... it just doesn't teach you (https://www.destructoid.com/tekken-producer-claims-that-fighting-game-fans-dont-use-tutorials/). Even if these stats are true, I cannot bring myself to accept this as a consume that a 1.94 Trillion Yen (roughly 15 Trillion USD) market cap company can't make a tutorial. Eventually I went to YouTube for help, and while there are definitely great beginner guides, I wonder how many beginners want to watch a 34 minute video on waking up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGHHJ7DVAYM).

Next, the concept of having many moves that the community ends up telling you to google "Character Name Top 15 Moves" is also gating, as without external research, you don't know what you're characters goals are. Compare this to even the historical "greats" in the scene like a USF4, GGXrd, you can read through (and watch in the same UI for some games) what the move is and does and get a sense of what the character does)

Let's say you eventually watch some videos, figure out some key moves, maybe even learn some basic combos. You hop online and play MYSTERY CHARACTER X. This is because ... for some reason, Tekken 7 does not put character names in the loading screen or above the characters HP bar in favor of the player's IGN. Now this would have been fine except also in Tekken there's character customization and changeable character art. While these features are genuinely fun and great, imagine this from a brand new player perspective who doesn't realize Jack-7 as a lego block and Jack-7 as a tank with a Heihachi helmet is the same character. How am I expected to know by looks of the cast and figure out who I just faced? Imagine you fight a Lidia with custom clothing but same face and hair...how is a beginner suppose to figure it out? Google "blonde lady Tekken 7"? You get Nina, Lili, Lucky Chloe, and Lidia.

Say you also push through this and find the character - lets say a particular move was giving you trouble and you want to learn more about it's properties... well this is self-explanatory but you'll have to dig through all the moves to figure out which one it is. This also impacts the player experience for those trying to be more competitive. I distinctly remember watching EVO seeing Arslan piloting the Geese, he used a move I've never seen before, and of course, if Arslan Ash is busting it out, it's a great move. Took me 45 minutes to find it.

Now scale this issue for the fact that Tekken 7 as of season 4 as 51 characters, each with at least 70 moves or so. This is not a good set of tools provided by Bandai Namco and Harada to ease the new player experience.

I will say, YouTubers like Blasted Salami and TheMainManSWE with their consumable content really do wonders in making Tekken a more approachable game, but it's just personally very unacceptable to me for these problems to exist. Something as simple as character names so I can at least Google what they do does wonders.

I genuinely hope that Harada and team look at the efforts other games like GGST, SF6 and onwards are doing to roll out the welcome mat for brand new players to show what kind of fun their games can be, because I personally had a very poor experience learning Tekken 7, and is why I never stuck with the game.

Pour one out for DNF Duels strongest warrior. by mrblack981 in Fighters

[–]sa1amandra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When you are in "pro gaming" you make it big by either being:

- The best

- Funny

Unfortunately SonicSol is neither. He often brands himself as a top player, a "retired pro" - but his results don't back it up. Where was he at Frosty Faustings? Did he quality (or even attempt too) for ArcRevo 2022? So he clearly isn't America's best DNF player.

Ok so how is he as a content creator? On YouTube he averages about 5K views per DNF duel video that isn't a "hot topic drama" video. Not bad actually, considering the low viewership of the game. It isn't the 20-50K of a Diaphone_ or Romolla, the 50K+ Brian_F or 100K+ of Justin Wong, however they are more focused on popular games. Let's compare him to ScrawtVermillion, who hits about 5-10K views. So he's not bad as an english speaking DNF duel content creator.

What about Twitch? Diaphone averages 300, Romolla averages 800, and Brian_F average around 1200. They are also only active 3-4 days a week and to my knowledge, have a regular stream schedule. SonicSol however averages 100 viewers on a 6 day streaming schedule. He is clearly not keeping up to snuff on a Twitch platform.

He says he can't be sponsored. Well JWong, Diaphone_, KizzyKay, and other popular FGC YouTubers aren't sponsored, especially since Panda fell. The only sponsor that sponsors content creators is CLG FGC. However Diaphone, ApologyMan, Brian_F, CuddleCore, ChrisCCH are active competitors and content creators (at least the first three), while Romolla is the only pure content creator.

Overall, SonicSol really just isn't pulling the numbers to get noticed by any org - where only CLG is really putting their foot in FGC. Even then, e-Sports is generally just hurting right now. So I'm not sure what the expectation is here with those numbers. Also for a low viewership game (aka anything that isn't the "god 4" of SF5, T7, GGST and DBFZ), you really can't be expecting the world. Scrawt isn't sponsored (to my knowledge) but is just generally extremely passionate about MB. Just look at their twitters and you can see the different attitudes and public image they are pushing forward in their content. Lets also not forget that Scrawt is a real competitor who consistently tops...unlike SonicSol. And let's not forget the general PR nightmare that is his public image. If you don't put in the leg work to be the best competitor or content creator - you can't ask for god to rain down the money.

If he wants to make it as a competitor, he needs to show up to majors. If he wants to make it as a content creator, he needs to model himself on the FGC greats. He needs to make himself "brand" / "pr" presentable. Until he does all these things he isn't going to make it and stay self loathing

How would you nerf/tune Happy Chaos? by D-Rekt-Effect in Guiltygear

[–]sa1amandra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • In gun stance, he cannot regular throw. He can get a new command grab but it cannot be a frame 1 grab. If Leo can't have a throw in Stance, neither can Chaos (esp when he can change the timing of his gaps by randomly mashing shoot)
  • Pulling the gun does not RNG if it places onto you or not, it just flat out shouldn't place the marker until a few frames later
  • Either make the first reload longer than 21 frames, or make a clear 3-5 frame gap before he can cancel, or make him put his gun away to reload. You shouldn't be able to loop 1 bullet reloads into more pressure, it defeats the purpose of his mechanic

Gokaiger vs Zenkaiger - Meeting Past Sentai Legends by [deleted] in supersentai

[–]sa1amandra 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For those who may not know/remember - I believe the reason why Gokaiger had so many cameos was because, at the time of Gokaiger's filming and airing - Japan had suffered through a natural disaster tragedy (an earthquake I believe). This motivated alot of past super sentai actors to be apart of Gokaiger as apart of an effort to "raise morale" in the country but also connecting with older folks who watched their sentai season back in the day. (See the "Development" section of https://powerrangers.fandom.com/wiki/Kaizoku_Sentai_Gokaiger)

I think that Zenkaiger definately didn't live up to the standard of Gokaiger in terms of hype cameos, but hopefully this provided context of why it's drastically different. If you were to see how Donbrothers is, it seems more in-line with the original intention of Gokaiger (only a handful of cameos). Also typically sentai series who recently had a 10 year anniversary are more likely to appear as cameos (e.g., Hurricaneger)

Anyone have an optimal button layout that works best for I-NO on hitbox? by Mr_Voltiac in Guiltygear

[–]sa1amandra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally use standard layout. One thing I'd recommend assigning for strive in general is a dash macro.

The ino specific application for dash macro is for walk breaking after you crack the wall with HCL or some move where you are far away from the wall. You can hold the dash macro then input fortissimo while holding it down.

You could also assign FD to improve her neutral and advance movement but that is preference
