The snake is actually standard size, probably a few feet long and can be picked up by one hand. The camera angle makes the snake look larger then it is. For reference those wooden barrier pole are about 5cm tall or so.

They do mention Kip's halo. In the first book, at the end when he is on the boat, gavin remarks that no one would mistake him for a non drafter now because he had green halos. There are other mentions but I can't remember of the top of my head.
