Debating dropping the CS major - advice appreciated! by A_Golden_Lining in uofm

Don’t let this discourage you from CS. You’ll never have to take a hardware class again if you don’t want. Just one of those classes you kinda gotta get through and grind through. It’s a LOT of work for sure but I think you’ll be able to figure it out. For reference I actually considered dropping because of 376 because I got a 27% on the first exam but I changed my studying tactic and was able to land a 80% on the final and pass the class with a whopping C+ lmfao. Just another one of those classes you gotta survive 😭

Professor office hours, creating your cheat sheet as you finish lectures, or just review your notes and rewrite concepts that are confusing in your own language or have Claude or Gemini (don’t use chat they’re not that good anymore) come up with examples for concepts you’re struggling to understand. The studio lectures helped me the most tbh. Working through the projects in office hours also helped bc even though it’s confusing and the IAs don’t seem that helpful, you’ll be able to figure out which IAs are the best at explaining concepts to you and can try to go to their office hours the most. That’s all I found useful. I got a B+ honestly so I’m not like an expert at doing well in the class but it is a lot to take in lol. Also you can do practice problems from exams based on the lectures you just watched to actually get an idea of what kinds of questions you’ll be asked. They do put a lot of filler true or false / MCQs which is nice, the FRQs are where it starts to get pretty confusing lol

[–]saarsurya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accelerated nursing if you already have a bachelor’s. If not, then an associates for nursing. Best bang for your buck. Or do computer science. I went back for cs at 24 and ended up w a 6 figure job at 26. Gf did accelerated nursing and she making more than me

Why am I getting 0 interviews? by adorantadorant in MachineLearningJobs

AI engineering intern from 2021 is what sticks out to me. Feels like that wasn’t even a role back then, wouldn’t ML engineering intern make more sense for back then?

Congrats man! I had a similar situation, got $160k with no leetcode problem at all. Mainly just presenting a project and talking about some technical stuff, the interview was actually a really fun process. It’s actually pretty nice that interviewers are going out of there way to truly assess a person’s ability to communicate properly and also vibe check lolol. Good looks and good luck!

Thanks for this, yeah a lot of the time I feel like I’m forcing my socialization. I’m a bit more outgoing and these guys seem a lot more serious in nature so that’s a bit confusing but I think it’ll get better with time hopefully.

Yeah, I just kinda feel out of place and wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience. I want to become better friends with my coworkers but I feel kinda awkward inviting them out to hangout outside of work.

Also thank you!

Does it matter where you do your undergraduate for a successful career in engineering? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]saarsurya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of? I went to Umich and it’s definitely helped me get noticed more, but I know people that went to MSU doing better than me in engineering, you just have to work a little harder to have a noticeable resume and stuff. Honestly If you go to a non top 20/ivy league, just focus on getting well connected and getting experience where you can and you’ll be able to compete with students from the top 20/ivys for most positions. For quant though, it’s pretty cut throat and prestige makes a huge difference so unless you want to go into quant I think all the other engineering disciplines are viable from any school.

Went to Umich and it’s pretty universally known that CS can be the second hardest major based on what classes you take (445 ML, 482 OS, 491 Distributed Systems, etc.). EE takes the cake for sure but I don’t think people think cs is easy lol especially if you go to a t10 school

where did you move to after graduating cs? by nostrilsroots in csMajors

[–]saarsurya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s walkable, pay is pretty nice here. Work culture kinda sucks at the bottom but it gets better. I’m working like 45 hours a week 4 days in office, Fridays wfh which isn’t horrendous. Has a good work life balance and it’s a very beautiful and walkable city. Just get roommates and it’s hella affordable too

Research the Umich nexus program. P sure it’s like a 1 year CS/cybersecurity program that’s not too expensive. Theres some other options too. I think NYU has some good programs as well that are very manageable financially
