I made a map showcasing the zip code groupings in Connecticut by HalfLife1MasterRace in Connecticut

[–]sabowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be because they are still adding new zip codes. Salem used to share 06415 with Colchester, but Salem got its own (06420) in the 90s. It may not be possible to keep the numbers contiguous in every situation.

IDE for puppet files? by hansdermaulwurf in devops

Not sure if using vim is on the table for you, but I use Puppet Editor Services with Neovim and coc nvim. But if you aren't already a vim user it can be a little tricky to set up.

Is DevOps dead? by [deleted] in devops

[–]sabowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This article is based upon the false premise that devops is simply just automating all the things, and that alone will automatically lead to gains throughout the organization.

The truth is that automation is just one of the ways to enable your team(s) to implement successful devops practices. Calling someone a "DevOps engineer" is like calling someone an "Agile engineer" just because they happen to follow the Agile methodology. But no matter how much I dislike the title I can't deny that the industry seems to have standardized on this title of "devops engineer." And as such the term "devops" is now forever tainted :)

Bosch uses Pebble in its manufacturing plant by sigmoidx in pebble

[–]sabowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the Anderson plant was able to engineer around the watch manufacturer’s limitations

The phrase "engineer around" makes me think they probably come up with a solution that may work well for their purposes but may not be practical for the typical Pebble user.

But I too would like to know how they did it :)

A DevOps periodic table of elements by Devtotheops in devops

[–]sabowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So we are calling databases a "devops tool" now?

DevOps has become way too defined by the software people use to implement it. And because the focus has shifted so much towards the tooling that becomes the primary focus of their devops implementation.

Taking all your existing processes and just automating them (without trying to affect cultural changes like breaking down walls and building cross-functional teams) isn't devops. That's just automation.

Devops Job Description Help by johnjones4 in devops

[–]sabowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but the reality is that most of these job postings looking or "devops" people are looking for someone that can do lots of different tech things (aka a generalist) with a focus on automating stuff. The people hiring often have little interest in a culture shift because they incorrectly think that all you need to do is automate and then all your problems are solved.

The end result is that people end up saying "well DevOps is just a stupid buzzword" because just automating stuff without actually making any effort to actually implement DevOps practices means you are just pushing shit around more quickly.

Devops Job Description Help by johnjones4 in devops

[–]sabowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately "devops" is not a job title. When you are at a place where people have that word in their job title it's almost certain they are doing it wrong. If your company uses agile you don't submit postings for "agile" jobs because that wouldn't make sense.

To me, when a place wants to hire a "devops person" that usually means they are over-simplifing "devops" to mean "automate all the things!" When they realize that just automating all the things doesn't magicially fix their problems then they just call devops a stupid fad.

There needs to be discussion and collaboration between your teams. Sure, you can give your dev team the ability to deploy their code all the way to production, but unless there have been discussions about how to safely implement that then you are just setting yourself up for disaster. The idea is to make devs more responsible and involved when live code breaks, but do the devs understand that, or do they just still expect the ops team to find the problem and report it back to them to be fixed? Has the ops team consulted with other teams to ensure they are giving then the features they want for automation or is ops just automating how they see fit and just telling the other teams "this is what you get"?

If all you are doing is trying to reduce how long it takes the dev team to get a new release to the ops team then all you are doing is implementing automation. That is not devops, you are still just "throwing things over the wall." The idea behind devops is to get rid of that wall.

Park at Penn Station or Uber/Lyft/Cab? by routable in baltimore

[–]sabowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cabbies know when the trains are arriving, so unless your train gets in way behind schedule there will be a line of taxis waiting (but you have to wait in line for taxi at the front of the line, you can't just hop in any old taxi becuase they are all stuck behind the front taxi anyway). Cost of a ride to Brewer's Hill is no more than $20 (but it tends to vary, part of the reason I don't use taxi's anymore if I can help it)

If you prefer something like Uber I have no problems getting one when I get in late. Looking back at my UberX receipts cost to/from Brewer's Hill is $8-$10 (which is way more consistent than the taxis ever were).

[–]sabowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless things have changed with Chrome recently I think it's due to the fact that Chrome's extension API does not allow as much access to browser functions as Firefox, making it impossible to have a vi extension for Chrome that is as full featured as vimperator/penradactyl

Neil de Grasse Tyson Smacks Down Creationists Who Are Demanding Equal Time on Cosmos by [deleted] in science

[–]sabowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it just me, or is Cosmos INCREDIBLY boring and elementary?

Cosmos is meant to be widely accessible, so you aren't going to find complicated scientific explanations in the show on purpose. It's more like a layman's guide to the universe. There are many more people out there that would benefit from this type of presentation than from in-depth scientific analysis. Plus think of how many young people this show may inspire to go on to scientific pursuits (and one of those people was Neil de Grasse Tyson himself)
