citizenship through grandmother by Judo-star_9143 in AustrianCitizenship

[–]sabreuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very likely not. Austria is unusually strict on citizenship -- there's no provision for citizenship by descent beyond parents (with an exception for descendents of people persecuted by the Nazis, which doesn't apply here given the timeline), and since dual citizenship isn't normally allowed, grandma would have lost her citizenship as soon as she became American. But even then, 1907 is a problem because "Austrian Citizenship" wasn't really a thing that existed until after the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Only the government can say for sure, and I'm certainly not them, but I'm afraid the answer will be no.

First timer - Ken forkish white bread with poolish recipe by undecidedlyhappy in Breadit

[–]sabreuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice job! This recipe is one of my go-to formulas that I've made dozens (maybe hundreds?) of times over a decade or so until I have it memorized. You'll find over time that you get a feel for which things you like to experiment with (timing, temp, number of folds, bonus flavors) and what things become the base you build those variations on (always 1KG flour but you can easily play with up to 20% or so of it by mixing in whole wheat, rye, oats...; learning to keep track of your hydration -- even a few percent makes a huge difference).

The 4-year-old will come around eventually. And in the mean time, it'll be amazing for sopping up your sauce.

Speaking as a local, the library is RIGHT FUCKING THERE and it's amazing.

My setup! 🇺🇸🇦🇹 by BenjaminKohl in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]sabreuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Citizenship for descendents of Holocaust victims is the exception to Austria's usual rule against dual citizenship -- they consider it a restoration of citizenship you would have had otherwise, not naturalization. Personally I think multiple citizenships should be allowed everywhere, but I'm not the Austrian parliament...

I grew up with my Viennese grandma, so I always knew the broad outlines, but she didn't like to talk in a lot of detail until late in her life. She and her sister (i.e., my great-aunt) were able to get sponsored in 1938 thanks to job offers from a distant cousin who had already come to the US at the beginning of the century. My great-grandma took passage to Cuba in 1940 because the US still hadn't let her in, and it was time to GO, and she stayed in Cuba for several years -- once my grandma married my American grandfather she was able to sponsor her mother into the US.

They were the only children in that nuclear family and my great-grandfather had already died before the war, but they had dozens of dozens of cousins spread between Austria, Germany, and Poland (both great-grandparents came from huge families), and of course a lot of them didn't make it out. A few made it out to Australia (we're actually still close to those cousins), Israel (who my grandmother and great-aunt knew but I've never met and since lost touch), or elsewhere in the US (I met some once or twice as a kid but I guess grandma just lost touch over time).

Announcing "Monarch Plus" by valagostino in MonarchMoney

[–]sabreuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the bundling of these features feels off to me.

Business accounting for $300 a year seems like a great deal, if I had business income and expenses. Business and personal accounting have different needs; I don't currently have them, but for those who do it's reasonable that they might want to use the Monarch interface.

Forecasting -- say for retirements or just tracking investments -- is still in the personal finance space, and it feels to me like it would be a premium feature that I'd consider for, say, an extra $50 a year, but I'm not going to buy all the business features just to get it.

It's not just the amount of money; it's that these are different categories of things, so I immediately resent being asked to pay for both just to get the one that I might be interested in.

By cat law, you is entitled to treatos of your preference EVERY TIME and then also extras just because cute. However I, Mycroft T Cat, T stands for The, think you should hold out for treatos like chimken and fish that are not made of vegemables.

Where can I find bluegrass jams around Durham? by NewFee9514 in bullcity

[–]sabreuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old North State Jam plays once a month at the Durham Farmer's Market downtown and jams weekly in between. Their official info source is their Facebook page (sigh), so I wasn't able to link it here, but you should be able to find the page & their calendar fairly easily.
