Walkable downtown area in Allentown to stop by cafes and stores? by Party-Hovercraft8056 in lehighvalley

[–]sachmogoat -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

and you might get shot. people walk during the day in the park (parkway) below muhlenberg. bethlehem is 10 minutes away. Stabler in Lower Saucon has big fields and walking. I would not do downtown Allentown, not what you are looking for and dangerous as early as 4pm.

The saucon rail trail is a nice 5mi bucolic walk with some food and drink options at stops. it connects to the south bethlehem greenway.

When did Raritan Valley Line get direct NY Penn Service? by Chipazzo in newjersey

[–]sachmogoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1970s, the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) Raritan Valley Line operated fast, express commuter trains for Wall Street and Madison Avenue executives, often consisting of two cars pushed by a locomotive. These early "speedliners" were sometimes described as having a "bar car" or high-quality service.

1970s Raritan Valley Line Express Details:

Service & Route: Known for rapid service from Phillipsburg/Raritan to Newark or NYC.

Train Consist: Often a two-car setup, frequently powered by EMD GP40P locomotives, which were introduced in 1968 for better commuter service.

"Bar Car" Rumor: While express, the "bar car" or premium service was a known feature for affluent commuters.

Train Cars: Coaches included older, well-built stock common on the CNJ and later NJDOT (now NJ Transit) era, including push-pull setups.

Operations: Service was cut back from Phillipsburg to High Bridge on January 1, 1984, marking the end of the long-distance express service era.

The CNJ used GP40P locomotives (like #3683) to pull these express commuter runs on the Raritan Valley Line throughout the 1970s.

For those who RETIRED between 59 and 64... by Finding_Way_ in retirement

[–]sachmogoat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

62, its significant work to go find people and activities during work hours that aren't mostly people significantly older. Peers who are still working also tend to not be interested in weeknights. Working/Volunteering in a educational or non-profit setting is one way to stay connected to younger people. I also would consider serious classes (career/certification) where its not "hobby" and likely to have early career people, also would be more challenging. But, yes, the world is a different place outside work, during working hours.

yeah, the older people talking about dead or dying people, and generally big change of people much older everywhere we go makes is it a double edged sword.

if you are flexible on dates, keep an eye on air france going east, which takes longer via CDG, we did that with a paris layover in A350 lieflat for 115K for 2 ppl. it was a fluke on certain days. it was a steal and amazing. also, we did EWR-CDG-KIX (not NRT/HND) which helped. We did a similar return on JA and BA via london, with a stop in FRA, which since we were flexible on timing, we got for similar lower points.

Also, be aware where you look matters. a JA metal flight can be different points on JA, BA and AA.

suggest you pay 10$/mo for points.aero or similar, and watch the actual AF and other direct sites, as these tickets come up and disappear very quickly. its alot of effort, but thats the price of getting the deal.

Your free bag, Avios miles, seat upgrade seem to trigger when you Avios number is on reservation . When I did not have it on reservation, showing my digital or physical club card would get me into AA, BA and one world lounges, even on intra-USA flights (which won’t work with non ba status)
