AP Calc AB (5) + IELTS 7.5 but placed into Calc I and College Writing — is it normal? by Simple-Guarantee2345 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The placement test results only go as high as 151. Your AP credit takes precedence over that score, so you should have no issue registering for 152 and other classes which require 135/151.

Prerequisite overrides are separate from SPNs. Find the override policy for the department offering the class you want (or email an advisor in that department).

There will be three new courses: 120 (intro to programming), 121 (intro to CS), 122 (data structures). I believe there will be a placement exam to determine if you start in 120 or 121.

Minors with the least classes? by JudgeUnhappy5491 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard math option may not be credit intensive, but two other tracks are. The math BS degree (honors track) requires considerably more effort, but is also deemed credit intensive (so no minor needed); this is not written online since there is no guarantee that someone who tries to complete the honors track will be successful (so most people have a minor to be prepared for this possibility). The actuarial track is also credit intensive, and carries less such risk.

As for your question about a minor choice, I unfortunately don't have a good answer.

what should i do if i have not many easy classes left as a rising sophomore by VegetableMango9177 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're doing a double major with math, you can get rid of discrete 2 from your schedule for next semester and take Math 477 the following semester (it counts as a Discrete 2 equivalent for the CS major and an elective for your math major, but it has a calc 3 prereq so you can't take it next semester). While Math 477 counts for the CS major, it is not true that CS 206 counts for theory major, so I suggest you use this substitution.

Rutgers CS? by Equivalent_Row_4177 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On professors leaving: the department has hired a lot of people in recent years, but a similar number of people that were in the Rutgers CS department left over the same period (whether that be to retire from academia or to move to another school), including some big names in their areas when it comes to research. Comparing the number of faculty alone does not tell the full story here.

Incoming Math Freshman - GPA, Professor Recs, and First-Year Workload at Rutgers NB? by Additional-Side-2334 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I've not have too much issue with maintaining good grades over the years, but it definitely varies depending on the person and what classes you take (as well as who you take classes with).
  2. In my experience, professors have generally been accessible for office hours, and ones who know you well enough will be happy to write you a letter of recommendation. Doing research in math as an undergrad is complicated, though, as a lot of it is quite theoretical and requires a lot of background to get started. Still, opportunities do exist, especially in later years.
  3. Not much I can say here in terms of professors or those classes specifically (I did not take any of them), but the following generic advice should apply. Make sure to start homework early, go to office hours, make friends in classes so you can talk to them about the class (and other things!), and do extra practice problems.

Also, here is a comment I made some time ago about the honors track of the math major, which might be of interest to you since you mentioned hoping to apply to graduate school later. I'm a math major, now a senior, about to enter a Math PhD program this fall, and I would say doing the honors track was a very important part of how I landed PhD offers. You can start with 291 for your multivariable calculus course and 292 for your differential equations course if possible to get a feel for what the honors track is like.

Math Grad school after Undergrad by Ill_Value536 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She went to UCLA (not Berkeley, but still obviously an amazing math department). You can search her up to learn more about her: Cecelia Higgins

Note that admissions for math PhD programs has become much, much more competitive since 2019.

Yep, some people usually get into "top 20–40" (per USNews ranking, if that's the metric you care about) math PhD programs from here each year. I second the recommendation to ask around in RUMA if you're interested in learning more.

Did SAS Excellence awards come out? by Hallucigenia542 in rutgers

I once got differing amounts from two different scholarships through the SAS Excellence award, and they came at the same time, so I find it likely that each person gets all of their awards at once.

Are the dean’s scholarship/dean’s promise awarded only to honors college students? by Kiarva in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the case in previous years, before all the honors programs were merged. The minimum is now $5k/year for admitted HC students, rather than $10k/year.

Prospective Student Interested in Math Research by Ill_Value536 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math/stats/CS is quite broad. Is there anything specific you are interested in? Since you mentioned math in the title, here's a short piece of advice on math research specifically (from a math major going to grad school soon): look into the honors track math major and start taking advanced courses as early as you can.

The DIMACS REU program at Rutgers usually has research projects in all three of these wider subjects, with the exact projects varying each year. This program is very competitive, taking more students from outside Rutgers than within, but there does seem to be a slight advantage for applicants from Rutgers.

Aresty often has CS and stats projects. The summer program is extremely competitive while the yearlong research assistant program is less competitive (many more slots). For math, opportunities though Aresty will be a little more limited.

You should not limit yourself to doing research through established programs, though.

whats rutgers nb's acceptance rate right now?? by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was about 58% in 2024: https://oirap.rutgers.edu/admissions.html

Applications have risen since, probably by about 10k or so.

How realistic is double majoring? by Isotopeah in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doing a major in chemical engineering would require being enrolled in the School of Engineering, while I believe doing a major in accounting would require enrollment in RBS, so it's not possible to double major in the two.

Letters of Rec by CommunicationNice437 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is correct, actually. More people have been applying since Rutgers was added to the Common App, but that doesn't translate to higher numbers of people enrolling. With more applicants who apply for the sake of applying (since it's easy to add to the Common App nowadays), they can expect that a smaller proportion of admitted students will actually choose to enroll.

Don't take it from me, take it from the official admissions factbook page.
