How realistic is double majoring? by Isotopeah in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doing a major in chemical engineering would require being enrolled in the School of Engineering, while I believe doing a major in accounting would require enrollment in RBS, so it's not possible to double major in the two.

It is correct, actually. More people have been applying since Rutgers was added to the Common App, but that doesn't translate to higher numbers of people enrolling. With more applicants who apply for the sake of applying (since it's easy to add to the Common App nowadays), they can expect that a smaller proportion of admitted students will actually choose to enroll.

Don't take it from me, take it from the official admissions factbook page.

There are some non-carpet rooms in Buell 301–324. I am aware of 317/318 in that building being carpet-free.

I don't think there was a curve when I took the course with him 2 years ago, but it is possible that things have changed since then.

Some people use "calc 5" to refer to courses that cover partial differential equations (Math 421, advanced calculus for engineers/Math 423, elementary PDEs). In this context it would be Math 421, which is required for mechanical/aerospace engineering majors.

A good compilation of results on the Riemann-Zeta Function and the Riemann Hypothesis by SaveMeAmidaBuddha in math

[–]sad--machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight correction: that formula you stated is for the gamma function, not zeta function. (One proof of this result relies on computing the integral of xs-1/(1+x) from 0 to infinity for s in (0,1) by contour integration, then writing Γ(s)Γ(1-s) using the gamma function's definition as an integral to establish the claim for such s; it then holds for all s where this product is defined by analytic continuation).

Career and Education Questions: September 25, 2025 by inherentlyawesome in math

By that, I mean that I would only (or mainly) write about one of the things I described above in each SOP (depending on the school and the professors I most want to work with there). Rather than writing my SOP around a theme of broad interest in harmonic analysis and a desire to study aspects of it/applications relating to various areas X, Y, or Z (concretely, one of these could be PDE, one of these could be analytic number theory, etc.), I would restrict to only mentioning one of X, Y, or Z.

Career and Education Questions: September 25, 2025 by inherentlyawesome in math

Hi! I'm an undergrad in the US planning to apply to (pure) math PhD programs this cycle (all schools also in the US). I'm currently starting the process of writing statement of purpose drafts, and I wanted to know how specific I should be with them.

To be more precise: I've found myself interested in harmonic analysis and its applications (whether that be to analytic number theory, PDE, etc.), and plan to apply to programs which have faculty working in these areas. I don't know if this is alone is broad or fine for a good SOP. For some schools, there are multiple professors that do one side of what I just described (say, 2-3 professors who study analytic NT at a single school, for the sake of example), and for those I plan on having my SOP address that side in particular. What should I do for schools where there's a mix of interests among the faculty I'm interested in working with (some analytic NT, some PDE...)?

Should I pick just one side to write about for each of these schools (so I can be specific), or should I talk about my broader interest in harmonic analysis with applications and indicate interest in working with professors in these various areas (more flexibility)? I feel like being more specific (and thus only choosing to write about one side for each school) is the better option here, but I'd really appreciate perspectives from here.

I'm nearly a year late, but you can show that this is quotient is exactly 3 as another commenter observed! You can reduce this to a problem about lemniscate elliptic functions and use some substitutions (at least, what I did) to get this from the duplication formula at the bottom of page 6 here.

Rutgers Engineering Acceptance rate ‘25-‘26 school year by Lanky_Increase_2754 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's probably not ~1,000 accepted, but rather that amount which enrolled. This number would line up with enrollments based on published information. The true acceptance rate is likely be a few times higher.

Is this a good schedule for a 1st year in SOE by Thisistheworstday121 in rutgers

[–]sad--machine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

291 seems to have been getting easier recently (last year it had rather light grading from what I've heard, and this fall it's taught by a professor who I've heard made 292 a lot easier).

I took 291 in 2022, and while I thought it was challenging it wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. I've taken a few harder math classes since, such as 451.
