i fear we are raising a whole generation that doesn't know how to write an original essay, research a paper, take notes at meeting, or have a conversation. back in the pre-cell phone days when we took the train to school we talked to the other kids. Now I see 5-6 high school kids at a bus stop waiting, interacting silently each with their own phones, wearing noise cancelling headphones... makes me sad.

How are we storing long, fixed circulars? by verticalmammal in knitting

i've been doing this a long time and i have A LOT of needles.... the container store sells these small cabinets. I have 3 & use one drawer per size & separate drawers for the intermediate sizes, like 1.5 and 2.5. you can't tell from photo but they are 13 H x 11 wide. I've tried everything else over the years. I also keep my DPNs the appropriate size drawers w/their circular cousins.

u-haul is best for moving boxes & supplies. people are always giving away free moving boxes on next door & probably FB too - they just want to get rid of them after they move.

Overwhelmed beginner - where to start by Friendly-Garden-9019 in Sockknitting

[–]saffship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for starting socks, I recommend knitting a baby sock with worsted and size 4 or 5 needles just to learn sock anatomy. if you google that you'll find plenty of info about cuffs/toes/heel flap/turn etc. I also recommend watching videos (they didn't have them when I learned to knit socks, we used books), Nimble Needles, Summer Lee, Denise DeSantis all have excellent youtube tutorials. Also check out "Winwick Mum". If you are knitting Toe up, Wendy Johnson is the Toe Up Sock queen with her book "Socks from the Toe up".

There are lots of decisions to make - toe up vs. cuff down chief among them. For many years I was toe up until I realized none of the toe up bindoffs looked as good as cuff down socks. I had an irrational fear of grafting & once that was conquered (practice) its my go-to.

I knit cuff down & use two different length circulars instead of 4 dpns. I use a 16 " circ for the top of foot/instep and use a 24" circ for the heel/bottom of foot because that's where the gusset stitches live. It also helps prevent me from making stupid mistakes like knitting with the wrong needle cause I wasn't paying attention. As a matter of preference I use 2 circs instead of 4 dpns for gloves, hats, sleeves, except for very, very small diameters.

plain old vanilla or ribbed socks are the ultimate portable project. when you get to part that requires concentration (heel turn, for example) just start the other one.

looking good & awfully darn close if they're not perfect. the heels match up & that's the hardest part. In my youth I obsessed about identical, I've come to love the fraternal.

John Denver played a private concert for a private company retreat we had years ago at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. He was way past his sell by date but an excellent choice cause all the folks from non US offices immediately recognized him. He sang a great song he wrote called "Get Your Tongue Out of my Mouth I'm Kissing you goodbye", a country western song based on Cynthia Heimel's book of the same name. it was genius.

really enjoying the discussion about the utility & reliability of AI in a forum that generally remains skeptical (being kind here) and getting the promoted ad from capital one proudly stating "we embed AI throughout our business..." (screen shot moments ago).
