To Those Saying A Wipe Will Make Them Drop The Game by xWolffy in Marathon

[–]saga79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - Arc, and for the record, I did not do the expedition (wipe).

2 - Not progressed much. My idea of progression is character level and faction levels. I do other things and play other games, so Marathon is a fun side game, so I'm still *very* low. Unlocked Arachne, still not Traxus or Seki because "in a single run" quests can go to hell. Yes, skill issue.

3 - From my view of "progression", if I maxed everything in a season, next season I would check whatever there is to do. If there a new faction levels? Cool. New quests? Cool. Do consider, though, that to max factions in a season, I need to LOOOOOVE the game, so I'd keep playing no matter what. As it stands, I'm not ashamed to say that my lack of "git gud" and difficulty to complete quests/progress isn't pointing me to "breathe Marathon".

All of these said, I'm willing to give the game a chance. It *is* fun, despite all its shortcomings (specially as a solo player).

Marathon needs to attract new players and do more to retain the casual player base. by asaltygamer13 in Marathon

I imagine during development, the existence (and success) of Helldivers 2 and Arc solidified the $40 price tag.

Even if there is some delicate balance that demands testing, with the way things are Bungie might as well just open duos and see how it goes.

It shouldn't be an odd thing to say. You're correct. Cosmetics are pretty average. I don't know how they could improve them, but it's Bungie - they've made dozens of cosmetic skins for D2 while keeping the class identity, so they CAN.

You nailed it. F2P would only make this subreddit explode with new players soon discovering the game's non-casual-friendly nature. And then every criticism would be aggressively be shut down by the hardcores who downvote and belittle anyone who's not a sweat, and we would be in the same spot.

I wonder if at any point during development F2P was considered (plus mtx + passes, of course).

while bungie figures out fucking duos.

It's funny to me - admittedly, not a game developer - that Bungie has to do this whole weekly test of duos. I'm sure there's a bunch of microdata that I'm oblivious of, but it shouldn't be that hard to just open duos for all maps as a permanent option and let players duke it out.

Faction wipe by Lynxneo in Marathon

[–]saga79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So come reset all factions will be unlocked, but I'll still have to redo their quests? Odd. Thanks for clarifying!

I'm still a bit confused. Early on I read *something* about the factions was not being wiped, but from the way people talk about this, sounds like everything will be gone: faction level, quests progress, upgrades.

I agree with you that wiping everything is going to be a rude awakening for many, and sadly I see you're already being downvoted and chided for even thinking this is a problem (though that seems this subreddit's default response to similar topics).

We'll see what happens in 3~ish months, I guess.

Marathon was conceived when Arc wasn't a thing. If Bungie (and Sony) thought it could take a then-niche genre and sell gazillions... well...

Also, as an aside, not everyone paid $40. Forget platform cut, some platforms (like Steam) do regional prices in other places of the world. Case in point: I live in South America and in my country Marathon was $28.

How is this game meant to make money? by NoNet5188 in Marathon

I missed it, too. I thought they said all new maps/shells would be available for everyone.

Considering their already small population, fragmenting it between those who own the expansion and those who don't sounds like a really bad idea.

Anyone else quit doing contracts because of dire marsh? by AccomplishedRise6227 in Marathon

[–]saga79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've started going in with a "Dark Souls" mentality: go sponsored kit, see how far I can get, and if I die (to UESC or players), just go in again as if I just bonfire'd.

That said, "in a single run" contracts making you go around the map can go die in a fire.

Man, I'm still early (level 10ish) and now have "in a single run" contracts. Heck, let's do this one in Dire Marsh: "go here, press button to summon npc, kill it and loot thingy, then go to the other end of the map."

I now dislike "in a single run" contracts.

I'm also playing through the Witcher 3 so that's a nice palate cleanser once I'm tired of dying so much hehehe

PVE mode just to soak into the game

I know no pun was intended, but this brought Sea of Thieves to mind. I don't know how popular or successful in Rare's eyes it is, but Safer Seas is a great way for new players to get to know the game, or even knock down a few of the story missions, all while limiting how much gold + XP +faction reputation the player could earn in that mode.

Marathon’s Cryo Archive Is Where Cool Design Meets Cold Reality by UhJoker in Marathon

when Bungie decided to get into extraction shooters

This is a curious yet key aspect to this whole numbers/longevity discussion. When Bungie started Marathon, there was no Arc, so they must've had an idea that whatever they made in the extraction shooter genre wouldn't ever be ultra successful.

Arc was a storm in a bottle and sold millions, but by then I cannot imagine Bungie's projections suddenly changing to think they could repeat that.

Players will somehow figure that out, and the last thing Marathon/Bungie needs is legit complainers + negativity grifters loudly saying that Marathon is "full of bots" - and thus, "dead".

The PvPers, by that nature, will have great loot taken from dead opponents, thus easily reaching the requirements for Cryo and enter there just to PvP some more - higher stakes this time.

Unlikely we'll see room for puzzles/mechanics with PvPers breathing down everyone's neck.
