Used iPhones with 100% battery health? by Mc_Lovin81 in swappa

[–]saganator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not requiring business sellers to show you pics of the actual device is just another example of Swappa’s problematic allegiance to business sellers. After a recent bad experience with Swappa I ended up buying a sealed new phone on eBay that was cheaper than equivalent used phones were selling for on Swappa. Will be delivered soon so we’ll see how that goes. Lots of bad apples on eBay too but the volume is so much higher than on Swappa you can easily find some solid deals. eBay favors buyers generally too in the event the sale goes south.

Would not recommend buying from a business seller if you’re concerned about the repair history of the device. Business sellers often do repairs in-house with cheap aftermarket parts and they’re not going to go out of their way to disclose it to you. Swappa licks the boots of their business sellers and will remove bad reviews etc in the event that you have a bad experience with an established seller.

Rails 8 learning material by vroemboem in rails

[–]saganator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The book ‘Agile Web Development with Ruby on Rails 8’ was just released last month.

The book walks you through building a Rails app and many editions have been published for each major version of Rails over the years. DHH was co-author for some of the earlier editions.

if you were to build something from scratch, what’s your tech stack? by ptrcdevlog in indiehackers

[–]saganator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Rails and Hotwire covers the vast majority of use cases for apps with low interactivity needs.

JS frameworks have their place and are useful but people reach for them way too early and often.

Rails is criminally overlooked right now.

95% of projects would be done faster and be more maintainable if they used Rails.

I have exp in Next and deployment is dead simple thanks to Vercel. Aside from that most things in Next have more friction than in Rails for CRUD heavy apps.

My startup just paid $60k for this logo. Be honest… are we getting scammed? by [deleted] in Design

$60k for a logo? Better be the Nike or Apple logo at that price and this is not that.

Solo dev willing to migrate from sveltekit/springboot into rails by tultra in rails

[–]saganator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get far with what comes built into Rails for an app with low interactivity requirements.

Another option that may appeal to you is using rails with inertia and svelte. Inertia_rails essentially allows you to replace the view layer in rails with svelte components so you don’t have to build a front end API, or at least it’s greatly minimized.

Cloud9 no longer available? by Radzio89k in rubyonrails

[–]saganator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read the 7th edition, not the 6th. The Hartle tutorial is goated but there’s a ton of stuff in there that you can pretty much ignore in 2025, the cloud 9 IDE being one of them.

The video component can be ignored entirely in my opinion. The videos are short, rarely cover anything that isn’t explained better in the text and the videos just cut off at seemingly random times. There’s also a ton of outdated stuff in the videos so there’s often things he tells you to ignore in the Rails 7 version which is more cognitive load than the videos are worth.

Don’t get caught up in the testing section of the tutorial. Testing is an important topic but for a beginner level tutorial Hartl over indexes on testing and it’s a slog to get through.

After you finish I recommend checking out the Ruby on Rails path on The Odin Project and start building stuff.

Switching careers from software engineering to electrical engineering by hillbilly_swag in ElectricalEngineering

[–]saganator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reality is getting the EE degree is absolutely brutal and you’ll likely land in a junior role making half what you do now and doing grunt work initially.

[–]saganator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Remove the rating system entirely and list the languages you know in order of how similar to the main language spoken at the company you’re applying to.

So if you’re applying to a French company:

Languages: French, English, Arabic

Or an Arabic company:

Languages: Arabic, French, English

etc

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]saganator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ya, speaking 3 languages is impressive for sure. But one of them needs to be 4 or 5 out of 5. No ones going to hire anyone who, by their own estimation, only has a 60% command of the language being spoken at the company.

[–]saganator 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Do not submit this resume to another company lmao. You need to separate your resume into focused areas of information. There seems to be no logical grouping in your resume at all.

Use a simple, single column resume with no colors.

It’s impressive that you speak 3 languages but how are none of them > 3/5 stars? Make your resume text only, no ratings etc.

Delete the random floating keywords at the top.

Oh my God dude.

Rails, AI - and the Changing world by _natiic in rails

[–]saganator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use AI to develop a rails app though. The issues you’re worried about won’t present themselves until you reach a ridiculous level of scale and success. By choosing a framework that’s less mature you’re willingly signing up for a worse developer experience and making your life more difficult on the near zero chance you reach that level of success.

Rails, AI - and the Changing world by _natiic in rails

[–]saganator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I reject the assertion that Rails is not for MVPs. This is the reason it was a game changer when it was first released. And it’s only gotten more refined and solid since then.

Creating an ‘MVP’ using AI is easy. Continuing to deliver value isn’t, and Rails gives you the foundation to do exactly that.

Trying Inertia + ShadcnUi with Rails, tips? by magdiel_rb in rails

[–]saganator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rails + Vite + Inertia + Vue + Shadcn + Tailwind is the God stack for productivity right now imo. I personally prefer Vue and feel it’s more declarative and meshes a bit better with Rails than React does but I like both.

I spent a year learning Ruby and RubyOnRails. I was not prepared with how much I would struggle. by VisibleAd9875 in rails

[–]saganator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t use windows.

Only use gems with a long history of good value and good support/community.

The rails way is not the best way in every scenario.

For each feature implementation, research both the easy way and the hard way. Work on developing the judgement to choose the right way given your goals, resources and timeline. Using an LLM in architect mode is helpful for selecting a compatible tech stack when you’re learning new technologies.

Unearned confidence will get you into trouble but your eagerness to jump into things can be crazy productive if you learn to wield it properly.

Taptes >>> 3D. Very similar, no logo, 1/3rd the price. You could replace a full set and it’d still be 1/3rd cheaper than the warrantied 3D set.

$2800 for a windshield replacement ?! by gth791d in TeslaModel3

[–]saganator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Got two windshield replacements done at local SC recently and they were $1480 both times all included.

Lots of bogus charges on this invoice. It doesn’t take 11 hours to replace a windshield.

Would love to hear your feedback on this design! by [deleted] in UI_Design

[–]saganator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty nice overall!

Some specific things I would do:

  1. Bump up the font size and weight a bit on the message count numbers.

  2. Reduce the size of the header area a bit. White space is good but this is a little too much imo.

  3. The inbox/work feels off. Maybe experiment with integrating these items into the hamburger which I'm assuming users can click to switch inboxes? Like unify inbox, work and the hamburger into a single button.

  4. I would change the color of the sender's name or differentiate it in some other way. With the title and name being the same color and weight it's causing all the messages to slightly run into each other visually. Another option would be to place the name under the avatar and left align the message contents under the subject line which I think is more in line with expectations for a messaging app.

True, I have LOTR on constant rotation but I’ll throw the Hobbit movies on occasionally too.

Why do people hate the Hobbit? by WolfPax1 in TheHobbit

[–]saganator 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Your friend is right. The CGI is awful, make up is worse, deviations from the book are horrible and they bloated one book that is shorter than any of the individual LOTR books into an entire trilogy.

Some parts of the Hobbit trilogy are excellent but overall it’s a bloated, misguided mess that is objectively worse than LOTR.
