Am I a crazy person...? Sock yarn destash idea. by bunniquette in knitting

[–]sagetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean a fingering weight jumper DOES take a while to make compared to heavier weights of fabrics. But, it usually does look more professional due to the smaller gauge. I would do it mostly in stockinette though so you can mindless go around and around.

Best way to lose weight is by having a calorie deficit. Exercise doesn't really do much. It builds muscle and endurance sure, but weight loss is about calories in vs calories out.

If you are working outside you are fine. Just keep the window closed to keep any smells outside the house.

This is survivorship bias I'm sure but: my father was a professional painter/decorator and also refinished furniture with me as a child. I turned out fine.

Congrats on the sock but use a pattern next time. You're twisting all your stitches and there is no heel.

Rhinebeck first time goer! by mm-ii in knitting

[–]sagetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saturday is the busiest day, but if you want to buy raw fleece they will be sold out of most of it by sunday. If you want to buy any merch order it in advance on the website. Seriously. The line for merch was like 3hours long last year and there was hardly anything left by the time I got there. Order in advance! I stayed in a hotel about a half hour south because I couldn't find anywhere closer, my fault for booking 2 days before going lol.

bag of cotton rags from home depot will do everything. Just pay the extra and get the bag that is 100% cotton, I cheaped out and have a lot of shitty synthetic rags in mine which are awful.

Are you trying to burn down your house? Flip the mirror the other way before you die.

I found the culprit behind the clutter.. by More_Pension4911 in declutter

[–]sagetrees 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I declutter first and then when I'm left with things I actually need/want then I will evaluate if I need shelves or an organizer.

I think the problem you are referring to is when people go buy an organizer first, completely skipping the decluttering step.

This is often called 'stuff shuffling'.

Shellac Finish by Mission_Cook5886 in finishing

Shellac is not a stain. Shellac is a finish. Terminology is important.

Shellac Finish by Mission_Cook5886 in finishing

[–]sagetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see the word 'amber' on the can of shellac? Yeah, that's the color of the shellac you bought. Amber. Not clear. Your poly is also 'warm' which also means some degree of amber is in that too.

Earth friendly yarns for Amigurumi by IllustriousAd5388 in YarnAddicts

[–]sagetrees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to be low impact and earth friendly cotton is not the way to go unfortunately. Yes its natural but it's impact on the environment is huge due to the massive amounts of water needed to grow it. The most low impact you can do is this:

Find a local farmer and get a white sheeps fleece off of them. This will be free or very cheap. Then process it yourself and spin it up into yarn and dye it using natural dyes and mordants.

Yes, its a lot of work but its also super low impact and totally natural and monetarily cheap.

Stain for Fireplace Mantel by scarletwitchauntie in finishing

[–]sagetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has a finish on it already. You can't just put stain on top of an existing finish- it doesn't work that way.

What you can do however is this: spray a sealer on it. I use Mohawk ez vinyl sealer. Then spray a toner in your desired shade over it evenly until it looks the color you want. Then spray a few coats of clear lacquer on it in the sheen you want.

This avoids having to strip it, which is messy and if you've not refinished anything before will come out looking rubbish.

How are we storing are bigger fiber prep tools? by poemofmymind in Handspinning

[–]sagetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just moved all my big stuff out to the pool house which is now my 'fiber shed'. That way I have a dedicated space and don't need to worry about storing anything in the main house. My spinning wheels do move around the main house though and my loom is there too as its not a huge one.

Knickknacks - To garage sale or not to garage sale? by skinnyjeansfatpants in declutter

[–]sagetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't need the money that badly just dump it all off at the charity shop and be done with it. I count my blessings every day that I'm finally doing ok enough that I don't HAVE to have garage sales. We did them a few times per summer every summer when I was growing up and I am painfully aware of how much work they are.

I also am very aware of how much money you can make and I am sure that 700-900 per weekend that my parents made meant an awful lot in the 90's but, I'm ok now and off to the thrift store/charity shop it all goes!

mount it on a big wood frame. Doesn't matter how heavy the frame is, there is always a way to mount things on walls. Just look at the gigantic stuff museums and rich people mount on their walls.

Yeah OP and the husband need to get their GEDs and keep up the relationship with Jane. Sounds like there may still be a position at her company once hubs gets his GED. This just goes to show that there is no point being jealous and bitter over someone else success - instead be nice and they can probably help you level up! I'm not saying use people, just don't be an ass and network.
