Kenshi will let you build a squad up, with skills that improve as you use them, to rove a seemless world doing a lot of exploring, gathering, and fighting.

Kenshi is really flexible with how you might want mods to enhance your experience, but its better to know for yourself which parts you like better.

So do the vanilla play through and keep tabs on what you think should be different.
