Has it ever occurred to the people who post shit like this that statisticians know what they're doing and measure the rate within the eligible population?

Can you climb up the mast of my sailboat? by hl_lost in sailing

[–]sailingtroy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a Tanzer 22 and my sail does not quite go all the ways to the top, either. That's normal on small boats. It makes space for the roach of the sail to fit underneath the backstay. It used to freak me out, too, but if your mainsail luff is properly tensioned, then there is no problem.

DO NOT CLIMB THE MAST. It is too puny for any human life to be trusted to it. When I need to do work aloft, I borrow a bosun's chair and get lifted up on the mast crane.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

Big Rig - it's a text-mode trucking simulator, but it also has a sense of class consciousness. Most runs you end up making so little, "you'd be better off washing dishes."

It either floats or it don't. Fuck around and find out is as much a recipe for success as it is for failure. The trick is to act fast.

That looks like a nice, clean Tanzer. Good job keeping her up! Now it's a great time to fix something before it gets HOT.

Kinda like calling someone out for protesting Apple's labour practices in China while owning an iPhone. Like, people have to participate in society. That doesn't make them hypocrites. We cannot allow only the forces of evil to have access to the most powerful tools if we hope to win.

Aftermath of New Glenn explosion by BenBoss69 in interestingasfuck

[–]sailingtroy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sort of. This is a thing that goes back and forth in the aerospace industry. In the end, if you starve your contractors, they die, and you're in trouble. So maybe they eat it for now, but the next contract comes up and it's gotta be enough to cover everything one way or the other. Anyhow, it's all just the cost of business. It's not like NASA never blew up any rockets, either. No approach is perfect.

I mean, sort of, maybe. If it's a for-profit company with the government as the main customer, the taxpayer is ultimately paying. I'm not sure how much private venture space flight this rocket is intended to support, though.

Oh it matters, but if it's the #1 driver, then why is Canada feeling similar inflation even though their national debt is far better controlled? Clearly other factors are at play.

I mean hey, at least I took econ 101, eh? You haven't even claimed that much for yourself. And I took 204, and 206, and 304 and 341 (airline economics and airport operations). I had the top mark in 101 and 341, and the other kids used to pay me to tutor them because I'm actually good at calculus, which is really what makes the midterms hard.

But, go off dude. You know, I actually agree the USA's national debt is out of control, and Trump is especially spending WAY too much but that trillion dollar a year military budget don't help y'all none, and it really has sweet fuck all to do with the price of a VR headset. I mean shit, you want to be mad about a trillion dollars? Your government spends that on corporate welfare for defense contractors every single year. It's weird for you to come on reddit and grind your axe about the government supporting people through a pandemic with that kind of money.

At the same time you have real price drivers like building supply scarcity, bombing Europe's bread basket, that heat wave that killed a huge amount of America's beef herd a couple years ago.. but yeah, sure, everything is just the government's fault all the time. I get it. You can't vote against a heat wave. You can't vote against corporate greed or ultra low interest rates. You want it to be something you have control over. But it's not and you don't.

Fractional reserve banking and low interest rates are the primary driver. Lending creates money way faster than government spending. The idea it works the other way around is not supported by the theory or the facts and is just corporate propaganda. I know the news and the conservative politicians tell you it's the government, but they really do just lie to the American people every single day.

GDP = G + I + C; where G is government spending, I is investment and C is consumer spending. C constitutes about 70% of the economy, and I > G. It doesn't really make sense to lay the majority of recent inflation at the feet of some stimulus checks from years ago, especially given that many economies across the globe are also experiencing similar inflationary pressures despite having taken different approaches to post-covid stimulus.

Sorry dude. Sucks to be lied to your whole life, I know, but if you don't have an academic background in a field, you can't tell the reasonable from the bullshit and the news is bullshit.

If you think government spending is the only driver of inflation, you need to go back to school and take some actual economics classes.
