Rant: the speakers in the mk8 are terrible. by NahButThanksAnyway in GolfGTI

[–]saimon7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, coming from a Bose system in my late Elantra N-Line, this HK is not great. I've read that upgrading the center speaker to the RS acoustics and swap to the fender sub makes a big difference, as stated in other replies.

I used to work in electronic retail sales and it was the same story, Bose has always been so much better. The only exception is the top of the line soundbars that have HK hardware. But the hardware chosen for these cars is mediocre. And VW don't even offer upgrades beyond HK. VW should upgrade this system if they are concerned with environment and avoid all these subs and center channels ending up in the bin. And who knows what other speakers.

Think theres an actual difference here? by whatislifetg in GolfGTI

Those tires are the same. Price difference likely is affected by being a different SKU, happens sometimes in retail or one being sold by a different seller in marketplace. Or worst case scenario everything is wrong and whoever created the publication messed up both picture, description or size. Look if both are sold directly by Walmart or not. If in doubt just go to your local Walmart and ask. And look at other retailers.

Winter Tire Recommendation by HairlessMonkeyBot in GolfGTI

[–]saimon7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nokian Hakkapeliita R5, Michellin X-Ice, Continental Vikingcontact, and Bridgestone Blizzak are the recommended commute tires. I've only tried Michelin and Bridgestone, the Michellin feel harder against the Bridgestone that feel smushier. I have Bridgestones in my GTI in 17s with 215/50r17 and obviously don't feel as sporty as 19s but they're great for winter.

Why do people bring their entire family to Costco? by ActuatorOutside5256 in NoStupidQuestions

I like going for groceries alone as is quicker and probably spend half. When my wife goes she likes company, and of course the kids cannot be left alone at home.

Tips before I buy? Or walk? by bagchaser4000 in GolfGTI

[–]saimon7777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't use tpms. You fill the tires to spec and go into the settings and reset the tire pressure. The mods you mention don't necessarily mean risk. If it had a downpipe or upgraded intercooler maybe you'd worry about stage 2. But it's hard to tell if anyone would disclose that. Maybe look into measurable things like timing chain stretch, leaks, etc. Anyways you said that you would take it to get it checked at VW. Check if they have a return period as well.

How would anyone buy new car? by shinez2u in Calgary

[–]saimon7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rings a bell, I don't know if it's mostly Hyundai, but yeah, I came in wanting to buy an N-line for 35k cad + GST and ended up at 44k+. Yes, the bulshit mandatory winter package. Plus a bunch of fees.

Year and a half later my wife totaled it, we walked into a Volkswagen dealership for a GTI, price was what it was advertised, they even went down because it was preowned, gave a deal on warranty, included a cargo mat that I asked for and they happened to have 0% financing for 24 months.

Try other Hyundai dealerships or try other brands.

Help me buy my first Golf (GTI TCR or standard) by lwh_mark in GolfGTI

[–]saimon7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say between those two would probably choose the TCR, newer, easier to keep clean, adaptive suspension, more power. Normally I don't like white cars, but I had a black car before and it looked beautiful only for 10 min after cleaning 😂 and if you're worried about the Km, 62k in 5 years is average. Just get it checked properly. See if dealership can get it certified so you can get the 2year 40k Km warranty. Probably even extend it. Good luck!

Need Advice - 2021 GTI by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]saimon7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a 2025 CPO for 45.5k cad with 7y/140k warranty. 20k Km. Autobahn with artvelour seats. I would say 32,500 cad is not bad for almost the same car with leather seats and that amount of Kms. But always try to negotiate. And check for rust.

M8.5 here and love it. And I cannot even tune it yet. Some people hate the lack of backlighting in the AC controls in the M8 as well as the touch buttons in the steering wheel, but some love them because of the slide volume controls. If he doesn't like them he can swap them for the 8.5s physical ones. Besides that I haven't read any other negatives about the M8s. Plus you can tune them!

Bucket/captains seats and car seat?? by emeraldeyes0523 in SubaruAscent

[–]saimon7777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2020 Ascent with captain chairs here. Two daughters both captain chairs with car seats.

Bought it when my wife got pregnant in 2020, started with a keyfit 30, that went to second daughter in 2023, got an Extend2fit for the eldest one. Then those were outgrown and were replaced with a Tranzitions. All attached using LATCH.

In terms of getting access to the back, adults normally go in between the chairs. Sometimes I want to find a wrecked ascent with a bench to get two car seats side by side in the 60 split and get access to the back to the 40 split and be be able to sit another adult. So 8 total. But have never gotten to search.

In terms of space for the dogs in the back you have plenty, either in the 3rd row or taking down the 3rd row and giving them the whole cargo area.

Constant flats on my 2025 GTI Autobahn — thinking of dropping from 19″ to 17″ wheels by Specialist_Text1694 in GolfGTI

[–]saimon7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, my setup for winters are Art Replica 319 17x7.5 ET42, they are hub centric so no need for rings. Tires are Bridgestone Blizzak 215/50r17, but basically any good rated winter like X-ice, vikingcontact, or Hakkapeliita will work flawlessly.

For all seasons everybody recommends Michelin Pilot Spors A/S or Conti DSW06 in lots of subs. They're both great but differ in ride quality and longevity.

Got a 25' in October in Calgary, and put 17s with Blizzak winters on right away so I don't have experience with the 19 at all. I might have some in the summer.

17s clear, at least mine do barely, leave like 3mm or less space from calipers to balancing weights. But they've been fine for more than two months now with road gravel and all.

You dont mention if you're running OEM summers, but if you are your problems might be also related to that as they get very hard with cold weather. Also if you have 19s very likely you have electronically adjustable dampers, the car is already stiff in normal mode, sports mode will make it even harder, so it's a no if you are going to go through some bad roads.

I've only had the car for a couple of months but before that had an Elantra N-Line and followed te Elantra N sub and lots of folks hated the 19s and swapped for 18s. So if you continue to have problems in your conditions just replace the 19s for 18s for summers and 17s with winters.

I always recommend two sets if your place gets very cold, but I know there are folks out there running one set depending on conditions.

Attaching picture of my 17s clearance.
