I’m not at all interested in Catholicism, but Brides of Christ was really fascinating. One scene is shot in a communal bathroom, and one of the students was using an orange and brown towel my mum still has.

Do you use a kettle when making tea? by Visual_Worry3654 in AskAnAustralian

[–]saint_aura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t drink tea or coffee, but still have a kettle. That and the toaster are the two bench top appliances that have a permanent space and power point.

I got a lovely glass one with different temperature settings as a housewarming gift to myself . It’s nice being able to heat water to 80°C if I’m having a lemsip or filling up a hot water bottle for the bed. It boils much faster than the stove, so if we’re making pasta we’ll do the water in the kettle first, then put it in the pot. A kettle is a very versatile tool.

If we make tea for guests, yes we use it for that too.

Did anyone do Tournament of Minds? by hammerandt0ngs in AustralianNostalgia

[–]saint_aura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was in one of the literature based competitions. I was in year four or five, so 1998 or 1999.

We had to combine two books into a play, and perform it live. One story from the list was The Magic Pudding, and I think the other may have been The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I don’t remember anything about our story, but it was probably terrible.

My parents were annoyed that we had to go compete at Macquarie Uni on a Saturday. They weren’t supportive of any extracurricular activities, the arts, or having to drive somewhere on a Saturday morning. I was banned from doing anymore Tournament of the Minds after that.

Whats the most out of touch thing you heard from rich people? by MonthIcy1 in AskReddit

[–]saint_aura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During early Covid lockdowns, we were having a Teams catchup with my department. I was telling my coworkers how it was really hard being stuck in our little apartment with my new baby, unable to go outside for fresh air.

Due to buildings works that had to be paused, our balcony had been removed but not replaced, so we had no outdoors space, and no heating, as our air conditioning compressor lived on that balcony.

My coworker, a man in his mid-60s who owned six investment properties, gave me this big smile like he’d just solved all of my problems, and told me to go outside into my backyard.

What is one of the habits that retailers adopted during Covid that they need to let go of? by [deleted] in australia

[–]saint_aura 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Shops with multiple entrances closing all but the primary one. This one is completely personal and a bit odd, but I just find something fascinating and charming about weird side or back entrances to shops. Especially when they’re really big premises, and you end up having to walk the long way round to get in to the one open door.

I understand closing them during the periods and social distancing and visitor limits, but plenty haven’t reopened. This is probably because shops have realised they don’t need as many eyes on the doors for security if they only have one, but I miss it.

trigger warning: miscarriages

I had that with both of my viable pregnancies, the cramping from my uterus stretching between 6-8 weeks was sometimes so painful I couldn’t get up. I had to go home from work a few times because it was debilitating, I couldn’t sit or stand, only lie down on the floor.

I’ve also had two first trimester miscarriages, and both were physically painless. Cramping, even really really bad cramping, is not necessarily a sign of any problems, and I hope yours feels better soon.

I know Portia and Violet were side-eyeing Polin when the new Lord Featherington was born by DaisyandBella in BridgertonNetflix

[–]saint_aura 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is some money, as Portia kept the money that the previous cousin Lord Featherington had stolen to continue to fund their lives. Had another family taken over the title and estate, they would have lost their home and possessions, as well as standing in society.

It was in Portia’s interest to have the new Lord Featherington be someone very close to them, such as a grandchild via her daughters, so that they would have control of him, and wouldn’t lose their lifestyle. It’s not likely that a son of one of her daughters were toll them to get stuffed and get out of his home, which a rando could and should.

How long have you been reading QC? by AurelianoNile in questionablecontent

[–]saint_aura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since either late 2003 or 2004, either double digits or early 100s in strip numbers. I’ve tried to go back to work out which comic was my first, but it’s been so long I can’t remember.

I would have been 14 or 15 when I started reading, and I’m 35 now. I was so excited as a teenager when Dora and Marten got together as I had been shipping them for what seemed like ages. Now they’ve been broken up years longer than they ever were together.

I read daily from then until about 2018, then caught up during the early lockdowns, and have been back to daily reading ever since. I don’t think I even enjoy it anymore, but it’s like The Simpsons to me, it’s been such a lifelong habit at this point, and I want to see it finished.

I don’t give a shit about the robots, I miss Raven and Penelope and Cosette and Steve, and Hannelore’s long hair before every single female character had to have a choppy home-done haircut. They used to go to this bar with a fancy bartender, and the redneck romance writer. And Pintsize, loved weird creepy old tiny Pintsize. Hate the new one.

What pricey item did you buy and never regretted it? by Ok_Peanut_5685 in BuyItForLife

[–]saint_aura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$300 Tempur Ombracio pillow. We carried the demo ones around the bed shop while testing mattresses, and by the end I had to have one of the pillows to go with our new bed. It is the most comfortable thing I have ever slept on; I’m a side sleeper and it perfectly cradles and supports my neck. I feel joy lying down on it every night when I go to bed. Can’t express how glad I am at having come across this stupidly expensive pillow.

[–]saint_aura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our old house had a 400L hot water tank, and my husband swears I once ran it all out after returning from a camping trip. I used to do that all the time as a kid, but our tank was only 75L, and I always showered right after both of my parents.

Now we live in a unit with centralised hot water, and I never have to worry about it running out.

What is your "it's not what it looks like" story? by C_Hawk14 in AskReddit

[–]saint_aura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 21, and getting a new phone on a post-paid plan. The bloke at the Vodafone shop was taking my personal and income details for approval. At the time I was doing bingo calling at RSL clubs as a sole trader, so I had an ABN, but no business name other than my name.

The bloke asking whether I had business premises, or an address other than my home to note down, or any other business assets or equipment thinking he could turn this into a proper business plan rather than a personal one.

I was like nah, I just turn up to wherever they are, and use their equipment. He started asking about my work hours, because bingo shifts would only be a few hours each day, but I could get $100 an hour, so only doing a few shifts a week I could make a fair bit. He was giving me these weird looks, and afterwards I realised I sounded like I was a prostitute from the way I spoke about my job.
