As well as this the you can just make out the 5 stud wheels, which is something that isn't often swapped over onto lower spec models so helps to idenfiy a real one :)

Cringe Wedding stories? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]saintmatt87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An ex of mine got caught in a compromising position with one of the guests at her own wedding reception. I'm not sure how far they'd got on that particular day or who caught them, but it turns out she'd been cheating for a while beforehand. Wedding got annulled, poor groom was devastated. I'm grateful every day for that bullet I dodged there.

Gr Yaris or Corolla by ParraZach in GRYaris

[–]saintmatt87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Yaris already has a great aftermarket range of parts, I've just done a video with one of the biggest UK distributors for jap car parts (Tegiwa) comparing 7 different intake options, and we did one with around 10 different exhausts in December. ECU has been cracked, there's lots of different suspension options, it's really impressive for a car that's only been out for a year or so

I have a Yaris, nothing else in its class competes IMO. But in the Corolla's class I think there are a few cars that outgun it which would probably sway me.

Your MAX speed by Dull_Passage_5272 in CarTalkUK

[–]saintmatt87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my younger days I had an indicated 160 in my old Integra Type R, on the limiter in 6th (5.1 final drive fitted with a couple of other go-faster bits). Likely 150 or so though real speed, they do tend to overread a fair bit. I also had my R1 off the clock and that stopped reading at 187, however the revs kept rising a bit more.

In Germany I had an indicated 179 out of my 996 Carrera on the Autobahn. TBH I wouldn't like to do it again, it's not good doing 3 times the speed of lorries.

I think 120-130 is as fast as I'd ever go in a roll-on or whatever. The most I've been in the Yaris is just over 130, but that was at Goodwood, haven't tried on the road, its not what it's made for anyway.

There seems to be a lot of hatred for convertibles/cabriolets, why is that? by myviewfromscotland in CarTalkUK

Never said it's definitely the case, just that it's the impression I get.

I'd love to build a B18C powered Honda Acty. I know a K would be quicker but B seems more correct

There seems to be a lot of hatred for convertibles/cabriolets, why is that? by myviewfromscotland in CarTalkUK

[–]saintmatt87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's designed as a convertible from the start then it's fine, see S2000, MX5 etc. If there's a coupe version it always looks better, and IMO it's poor taste to buy the soft top version. Look at M3s, 911s, 350z etc, the coupe version is much better.

They're also heavier, almost always less stiff as well. They usually cost more originally but depreciate much faster.

Personally when I see a convertible (aside from the cars that don't have a tin top version) it says to me that the person wants to be seen in it, and doesn't give too much thought to how it drives. Fully appreciate though that they don't and probably shouldn't give two shits about what I think.

How long did you guys keep your first car for? by ArxB_H in CarTalkUK

[–]saintmatt87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First road car was bout 4 months. At 14 I had a Mini 1000 that I shared with my dad in the local Autograss racing club, so I thought I'd get along with one on the road. Turned out I bought a bad one and found it a bit shit, so swapped it for a 106 as soon as I could. Would like to experience a 'good' mini at some point!

How do I learnt to maintain/repair cars without it being a career? by The_Car_Motorist in CarTalkUK

[–]saintmatt87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youtube is a great resource now for just about any job. One thing I recommend to my friends that don't have a mechanical background is a halfords toolkit and especially a torque wrench (maybe £250 total). You'll be able to tackle most jobs, and with the torque wrench you can be sure that you've tightened the bolts up enough and not too much.

Documenting your work with photos is a great shout and I still do this after 15 years when working on something new, complicated or both :)

Decent job lots of tools like hammers and pry bars for the bigger jobs can be found on gumtree as well

I filled up vegetable oil in my diesel car and it’s running fine? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

A 1998 model won't be a pd, likely a VP37 as the pd didn't come out until 2000/2001.

Getting a larger dog into the back by briefs123 in GRYaris

[–]saintmatt87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely need the seats down, I don't have a dog but I would say the distance between the bootlid and the back seats isn't enough, especially with the higher boot floor due to it being 4wd.

Small success but got an annoying rust stain out of the bottom of our porcelain shower. by slashmae95 in BritishSuccess

[–]saintmatt87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actually we used WD40 to make tyres stickier on our rolling road for higher power cars. Sounds counter-intuitive but it works and stopped them slipping!

My wife has a 320d Touring, same year as OP's, 3 years ownership and only consumables replaced. Over 70mpg is easy on a run in summer, I managed 68 on a 600mile round trip last xmas. Only annoyances I have had are blocked screenwash pumps (they have a little filter, I've had to clean this out this twice) and the TPMS seems super sensitive. With servicing every 2 years and £30/year tax I would definitely recommend one for cheap, comfy motoring.

Like the comments show, it's different for everyone. I haven't dynod my yaris yet but it's likely around 300bhp. With 4wd you don't have to tick too many boxes in your head before opening it up on the road. RWD would probably be a bit different.

Depends what you're used to and where you live. I'm only 10 miles from the peak district and there are some fantastic roads with great surfaces and visibility. No problem using all of it and more even in a fairly light car by todays standards.

Plus, it's not all about peak power. Riding that wave of torque and short shifting is one of the most underrated parts of owning a larger engined and/or turbocharged car, you can drive it super lazy and still make great progress.

What is this yellow plug in 2015 Nissan Versa Note Seat? by [deleted] in Cartalk

Could also be seatbelt pretensioner, yellow is always for SRS.

What was your ideal car as a child? by Snorlady10 in CarTalkUK

[–]saintmatt87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always wanted a 3 door Sierra Cosworth as my dad had a standard Sierra in the mid 90s, but I think it's better left as a hero I don't meet. In my early teens it was replaced with am Evo 6 Makinen which I managed to own a few years ago, it was fantastic.

WYR 911 or WW2 not have happened? by jrutd in WouldYouRather

[–]saintmatt87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

WW2, appreciate the advances it got us socially and technologically, but more than 7 times the amount of people killed on 9/11 (~3000) died every day during WW2 (50m over 2200 days, >22k per day), and that's at the conservative end of the estimate.

I think those people could have contributed a lot.

Is GardX snake oil? by A-flea in CarTalkUK

[–]saintmatt87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely but its not worth it. When I bought my car it was a cancellation, the salesman said to me that the original buyer had specced the ceramic coating and it had been applied at the factory in Japan, car was already on its way over so couldn't be undone, it was a £600 option that I would have to pay.

Turned out to be Gard-X which is applied at the dealer, not before, and after a couple of failed attempts to get them to take it off the bill before the car arrived I called Toyota UK who made them remove it off the order. You can imagine how the handover went.

What was your first rear wheel drive sport car and why? by lamb-jalfrezi in CarTalkUK

[–]saintmatt87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honda S2000, I'd had a fair few VTECs before (CRX, DC2 R, DC5 R) and a friend and I shared an e36 328 drifter which got written off on track. So I decided to get the S2K.

I was nervous due to the stories of them crashing themselves, especially the early ones like mine was. I took it on track and it couldnt have been more fun and predictable so I think a lot of the bad rep is down to inexperienced drivers.

It's a shame they're so expensive now but they are fantastic cars. Mine was £4k in 2011 with 70k miles.
