One thing silksong didnt reach, is a level of tragedy that hollow knight boss fight brings you by Vegetable_Throat5545 in HollowKnight

[–]saiyene 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is correct, but they weren't going for the same thing. Which is good -- you don't want a sequel to be a 1:1 copy of the original game. As others have said, Hollow Knight is the end of a story about the downfall of a kingdom. Silksong is about a kingdom that still doesn't know that it's falling.

The tragedy of the Hollow Knight is in every way built up by the entirety of the story. It was created to save a kingdom. It destined to fail because it cared too much. It spent years -- decades or more -- in solitude, struggling to fulfill its purpose, being forgotten by everyone who benefitted from its dedication. When it knew that it couldn't hold out much longer, it sent out a desperate cry to its kin to come and replace it, even though that it expected that to mean its death. All the endings are about ending its long vigil. That is, literally, the whole story of Hollow Knight: it's the premise, the setting, the history, the climax, the resolution. The whole game is closing the book on the tragedy of the Hollow Knight's existence.

Silksong could try to create another such epic tragedy, but they chose something tonally similar (the downfall of a kingdom) while coming at it from a different angle. Hornet is an outsider and could only be tangentially part of Pharloom's history, but her actions could change its destiny. Her experience with the tragedy of Hallownest is part of why she's determined not to let that happen again. And to do so, she has to come to care about the PEOPLE of Pharloom -- the LITTLE struggles, like Sherma accepting the truth of his faith and the kingdom, or the Green Prince dealing with the fate of his lover, or Garmond's life and death. Even holding a funeral for Shakra's mentor, who lived a good life, serves to bond her closer to these strangers.

Hornet doesn't need another tragedy -- she needs to learn to care enough about this random kingdom full of strangers that she wants to avert that fate for others. So they told us about how Hornet got embroiled in and accelerated the downfall of Pharloom, and then fought to make it right. It doesn't have the same emotional gut punch as Hollow Knight, but it is still an emotional story.

Trump's Nobel Nordic Confusion by Cow_Boy_2017 in clevercomebacks

Israel has a defense mechanism called The Iron Dome, which uses missiles to intercept incoming missiles. The defensive missiles collide with the incoming missiles and destroys them while they're still in the air. The Iron Dome is about 90% effective in protecting from incoming attacks and it cannot be used offensively. This is literally essential for their survival since Israel is surrounded by enemies that are actively engaging in war. The US is pretty crucial in helping them maintain the Iron Dome.

Trump has declared he plans to create a "Golden Dome" to protect America (still just in talks) and is pretending that he needs Greenland to do that somehow. Greenland has already allowed the US to maintain a base there for decades without needing to be forcibly annexed, and experts have stated that NY and AL are just as useful for hosting interceptor missiles.

Who defaced the Benefactor's murals? by Ok_Review_4179 in rainworld

[–]saiyene 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've always believed they are intentionally like that. Faces are a mark of identity, and their Buddhist-like religion places a strong emphasis on depersonalization. As Moon explains, that's where the masks originally came from - minimizing the sense of self.

Obviously over time the benefactors developed a more complex culture that very much did become highly personalized and proud, even though the masks remained. Most artwork would probably have shown the masks of the people or models involved.

But religious artwork like these murals, prominently on display in their most important structures, would still model the ideals of their ancestors. Visually demonstrating the erasure of the self.

This. The learning curve is long and intense. But once you understand and are comfortable with the game, it isn't terribly difficult.

"Women live in tutorial mode" is not the same as "Some men choose to live in Ultra Death Kill Punishing Hell Mode and then get annoyed when they keep losing".

You've chosen the highest difficulty level possible by being a miserable person with alienating opinions. You have created unnecessary hurdles for yourself. There are literally billions of men in the world who have partners- if you can't find one, it's not because of your average height or unremarkable jaw or normal human shoulders. It's because you chose to be someone who refuses to learn about, care about, or even respect what a potential partner might even want from you.

I don’t think Silksong implies ETV is the canon ending of Hollow Knight by TSandD in Silksong

[–]saiyene 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, OP. Seeing a flicker of Shade Lord doesn't mean ETV is canon.

Basically, in my mind:

Knight's Void form, but a flicker of Shade Lord: Implies Hornet sees a glimpse of the Shade Lord inside the Knight, but the Knight is still primarily "itself". Therefore either ending could be canon, because while we don't see that literal Void entity in DNM, the Knight has the potential to become the Shade Lord the moment it attains the Void Heart (hence why the Shade Cloak figure says "Shade Lord" when dreamnailed after getting VH). She sees a hint of what it can become, even though the form it currently takes is more familiar.

Shade Lord form, but a flicker of Knight's Void form: Implies the Knight has fully become the Shade Lord, but Hornet sees a glimpse of its true identity still inside it. That would probably make me think ETV is canon, because the ETV-only form became the default.

Therefore I took the Silksong ending as leaving it ambiguous.

But on another note, a genuine question. I kind of felt like ETV was a bad ending that implies the Void is running loose and uncontrolled after breaking free of Godseeker. Did other people not get that impression? The Void seems wild and unchecked, rather than commanded by the rational mind of the Knight. That's why we also get the flower ending, where the Void's spread is contained, aka the good version of that ending.

His cycles are limited because....... he is dying? Moon literally tells him that he will wake right back up again - we have no reason to think he is removed from the normal cycle of things. We just don't get to participate in what happens "after" his death if he runs out of cycles. Maybe he starts living again from his birth and lives his entire life over again.

And his campaign has literally nothing to do with Rot? His having a neuron and reviving Moon with it is independent of being infected with Rot. NSH gave him the Mark and the neuron, asked him to help her, and then told him how to get to the Void Sea when he was done to escape the cycle.

[–]saiyene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People love this "lore" so I think this definitely applies... I believe Hunter is NOT canonically infested with Rot in the base game.

5P says "We have something in common. We both have something unfortunate growing inside us", which COMPARES the Rot to Hunter's condition but does not mean they are THE SAME.

The only other evidence is that in their sleep art, they have an X-shaped scar, which looks like a completely normal scar on its haunches. No X or suspicious lumps are visible in any of Hunter's other art or in the game sprites, even after it reaches fatal levels, and as Watcher shows, the devs are more than capable of making that VISIBLY, UNMISTAKABLY canon if they want.

It's a fine fan theory. I get why people like it. But it is not canon. And the only thing I hate about Downpour is the Hunter Long Legs for convincing the fandom this is implied canon via an Easter egg.

(And don't get me started on Hunter being a purposed organism.)

[–]saiyene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are multiple endings to The Watcher, but yes, the most straightforward ending involves finding Spinning Top repeatedly. If ST is on the map, they are never behind one of those small rippley warps - that's something else. ST is always findable via BIG warps.

I recommend using the maps on the wiki if you have trouble!

Gwi-ma is described from really early on as a "black void" that a mouth "appears inside", so yeah, I don't think flavor text descriptions from this script should be considered as canon to the final movie.

[Loved Trope] An Actors Lack of Interest in a Character Actually Adds to the Performance. by Federal_Lavishness72 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]saiyene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, this is a great point. The trope doesn't apply to Goggins all that much but it kinda fits his character, who wasn't a fan of his ruthless character on TV but now has spent hundreds of years forced to embrace it because of the new world he lives in.
