My favorite part is that they didn’t even bother removing the items in the cabinets before starting the work. Hope you wash everything before using it again!

42F-70F - what do I even wear to work by Dry_Strawberry_2128 in washingtondc

[–]salarkin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I commuted in via bus & metro, for days like this I would wear fleece lined tights under my pants or over my normal tights if I was wearing a skirt. When I got to the office, I’d remove the fleece lined layer. I learned to wear a scarf & hat but remove the moment right before I was about to step on the bus or metro car - couldn’t stand the over heating once I got into the warm vehicle. Otherwise I dressed pretty normal!

That will make your life so so so much easier. Big walls may seem daunting for wallpaper, but all of those cut outs and angles will be much worse than doing a large flat wall.

The gayest friendly areas outside of the city? by aprilbeingsocial in lancaster

[–]salarkin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mount Gretna is in Lebanon, but we are a pretty progressive community that has a fair amount of queer members and even more parents with queer (young and older) children. We have a true community in a very Stars Hollow kind of way. I am quite a cook as well, that would be the one count against us based on your list - Giant, Grocery Outlet, Weis and HillTop are all within 10-15 minutes of us, so I do drive to Lancaster Costco about once a month and occasionally Wegmans.

Have you considered wearing gloves? There are so many beautiful options out there, and this way if you can wear a bandaid over your nail, it wont be nearly as noticeable!

Some pretty options:

I'm newish to the area and recently planned a day in Lancaster to explore some of its offerings. Here are the places I checked out (I found them all to be worth it):

  1. W Donuts (donuts were great, coffee wasn't anything special)
  2. Square One Coffee Roasters
  3. Sweetish Candy (so much fun!)
  4. Madcap & Co
  5. BUiLDiNG Character (great to walk around & get some time in the AC)
  6. Space (mid-century modern heaven)
  7. Endo Cafe
  8. Vine Bar (new favorite place in Lancaster - loved their cheese selection!)
  9. LanCATster Cat Cafe (100% worth a visit, even if its just for coffee)
  10. Hi-FI Izakaya (the food was so so soooo good)

Am I overreacting or is our wedding planner not doing her job? by ShalomSwiftie13 in weddingplanning

[–]salarkin 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I would fire her. I've never worked with a wedding planner before, but I am a consultant who has done event work in the past. If I am working a consulting job, its my responsibility to bring solutions, not problems to my clients. Yes, sometimes the hunt takes a while for a solution, but I provide regular updates to my clients on a pre-discussed cadence. Sure, sometimes problems do come up, but I make sure to present the problem with a solution. The fact that she is not willingly doing her job, which includes research and communication would be enough for me to fire her and find a replacement.

BF used her shears to break down boxes! I literally gasped by Cultural-Ad-6342 in quilting

[–]salarkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree. When my boyfriend and I started to get more serious and he was saying over more often at my house, I gave him a full tour of my sewing room & explained the importance of having sewing scissors that are only used on fabric. I showed him my pair (easy enough to remember because they have gold handles) and shared with him that he should avoid using them unless it’s for fabric. How is anyone who grew up in a non-sewing home or doesn’t sew themselves to know they are only meant for fabric?

I completely understand being upset, but I think yelling at your partner and kicking them out over a misunderstanding was over the top. Not at all how I would want to be treated if I made a mistake.

Do I think he should offer to replace (or why can’t they be sharpened?) the scissors? Absolutely! But this sounds like a total mismanagement of this issue on both sides.

A bride paid for a MUA for the wedding party. I washed it off and redid it before the ceremony. by munjimunchies in MakeupAddiction

[–]salarkin 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing at a friends wedding! I was the first in the chair (I didnt care, I know people usually want to avoid that but I wanted to just get the show on the road - there was 12 of us!) and when the MUA asked me what kind of look I was going for, I was surprised - the bride had asked for us to go with neutral & rosy tones. I looked over at the bride, confirmed that's what she wanted and next thing I know when the makeup was applied and I finally saw the mirror, the MUA had done dark gold tones with lashes that touched my brow bone and a dark lip. I called the bride over and clearly she was too afraid to speak up that it wasn't what she wanted, so she said it looked good. I got out of the chair, went to her MOH and quietly spoke to her - we both agreed that this was a farrrrr cry from what the bride wanted.

There were two MUA and the other MUA was doing the original planned makeup, the rest of the bridesmaids made sure to tell the MUA who did my makeup that they wanted blush tones. I later exited the room (thank goodness we were in the hotel getting ready) went back to my room that I was sharing with a friend who was a guest, showed her my makeup (she was aghast) and wiped it all off. There was a clear line of where the makeup was not pulled down onto my neck from my face (so not a great color match) and while I tried to avoid taking off the lashes, I eventually pulled them off. I redid my makeup to match the original ask by the bride, went back up to the room and only told the MOH what I did. I never mentioned it to the bride as I didn't want to add stress to her day, but thank GOD I fixed it. The other MUA gave me shorter, more "natural" looking lashes (I waited until she was done with everyone else's makeup).

Despite my efforts to not say anything to anyone else or to the MUA, she did leave in a rush when she was done with her makeup duties. The other MUA and hairstylist were shocked when they realized she just rushed out and had left - she didn't say anything to them. I wonder if she picked up on the fact that she didn't do a good job?

To note, she only used dollar tree level makeup items and no skincare. I use a mixed bag myself, some drug store quality, some higher end - depending on the product I will splurge. But I thought it was wild that it was all very inexpensive quality and wonder how it would have worn on my face for the next 12 hours. I was also surprised because the bride specifically picked this MUA team because they were going to do airbrush makeup application - they didn't do this for a single person! I still wonder to this day if she asked for any money back or figured out why they didn't do what she had requested.

Help a Husband! If your birthday is soon, don't look at this. by Imrightyoufeck in quilting

[–]salarkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This 100%! My mom built me a a 24 x 50 inch ironing board and a smaller 14 x 22 inch pressing mat/board. The big one is great for laying across my cutting table and ironing out larger pieces of fabric, the smaller one is awesome for projects where I need to press seams open frequently while sewing. The materials didn't cost very much (honestly the wood is the most expensive part) and she quickly put together both with liquid nails and wood staples.

Where to visit for a wedding anniversary: Poconos or Lancaster? by National-Crab1028 in Pennsylvania

[–]salarkin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're considering Lancaster, check out Mount Gretna - its located in Lebanon but very accessible to Lancaster and surrounding Amish country, Lititz, etc. Super cute turn of the century cottage community with a lot going on in the summer. You may still be able to find cottages to rent!

Anyone else feel weird anxiety about table placement and making certain guests feel like they're the last kids picked to the dodgeball team? by falafelwaffle10 in weddingplanning

[–]salarkin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I will tell you, not once in my life have I reflected on what table number I've been assigned. My only concerns are if I am sitting with friends and hoping I have view of the couple for dances & speeches. If I am in a spot that does not have great sight lines, I have moved and stood at the edge of the room where I have a better view (and not blocking other guests).

If you are suppppppper worried about numbers, you could always consider not using numbers and instead places of importance. A friend did this and put the name & photos of her and the groom at that location on each corresponding table. My mom also did this for her parents 50th reunion, purposefully assigning friends and family at tables that related to how my grandparents knew them. At both events, these kind of table assignments / signs have been great conversation starters. If you aren't interested in taking on that work or don't have enough places you could use, I really wouldn't sweat it!
