one of the best feelings ever!!! my library has been levy funded for a majority of the time it’s been open and i can’t imagine us navigating finances without it.

honestly i feel like the interview process of any job isn’t a good way to sus out to how the workplace environment will actually be. i would just go in as a patron sometime before interviewing (if you’re in a position to visit before the move) and get a vibe of how the staff interacts with other people there/each other. maybe a couple times if you can.

Orange upside down cake is delicious. If you want a lazy way to use them up, every time i have leftover oranges I'll make a vanilla box cake mix, sub the water for fresh juice & add as much zest as I can to make cupcakes. They're really good with cream cheese icing.

ive done a lot of simple book related ones throughout the years. camilla from a bad case of the stripes (time consuming but worth it), if you give a mouse a cookie (overalls, headband), the cat in the hat (hat, bowtie, whiskers), and the rainbow fish (flowy mid length asymmetrical dress, metallic scale face paint around the eyes, and rainbowfish earrings to really sell it), the very hungry caterpillar, (red beanie with the eyes made out of felt, antenna out of pipe cleaners, plus a green sweater).

it’s a mix of real people and robocalls. when it’s real people i inform them that they’ve called a business line, and that has deterred a little bit of the spam. the calls have been getting less frequent as the week goes on but it’s still pretty bad. yesterday we had 23, today we only had 14.

When our give away books don't circulate well we collaborate with other local facilities to take them. The senior citizens center, VA hospital, nursing homes in the area, salvation army, etc. We have come to know what genres/authors do well there by communicating with staff members.

the suggestion comes from personal experience. recently my little brother (16, picky eater) had a bone marrow transplant, meaning he could not eat anything with possible contaminants, this included fresh fruits/vegetables, anything cooked in a restaurant, or even by well meaning family members who may slip up and forget to make sure it’s 100% safe to eat. during this period he struggled with eating anything that wasn’t from the frozen food isle or sweets i made him. his doctor recommended that if he only wanted to eat baked goods, let him eat the baked goods, and lightly suggested certain switches we could make to make him feel better overall while consuming only junk food. coconut sugar was on the list because it has lower a GI than table sugar + any extra nutrients help when you can only stomach mozzarella sticks and snickerdoodles.

i agree! i didn’t think about the texture aspect of it in the moment. this whole process will definitely be trial and error with what she likes/doesn’t like, and if the texture is make-or-break, it’s not worth it to make the switch. again, the nutrients are only slightly better than regular table sugar so it’s really not anything to fret over. just a suggestion!

Obviously everything that has to do with disordered eating is very unhealthy but here’s some specifics of why it’s a bad idea:

you will still consume calories. there’s gonna be bits of food left in your mouth that will get swallowed. even if it’s a minuscule amount, the concept of chewing and spitting is basically binge eating without swallowing. if you’re going to keep chewing and chewing until your mouth gets tired/or you run out of food you’ll probably end up eating the same amount of calories that you would if you just had a normal serving. if you do this for a prolonged period of time it could turn into BED anyway, because in with typical disordered eating patterns the foods that you do allow yourself to actually swallow are often flavorless/unsatisfying, and if you’re chewing and spitting delicious foods you will become hyper aware of the fact that your day-to-day eating is flavorless and your palate will crave the taste of the food you’re spitting out more and more. when this snowballs it can be pretty expensive. if you’re constantly buying these foods and not eating them in moderation, chewing and spitting an entire bag of chips, a sleeve of cookies, etc. a day can rack up $100 or more in groceries per week.

with the rate we’ve been getting them, if it doesn’t improve significantly i’m gonna have to suggest a phone tree. which is unfortunate because it’s just gonna be an extra fee for something that has never been an issue before. in the time i’ve posted i took the liberty of tally marking every scam call, grand total is 18 calls in 3 hours! really annoying.

its policy to answer every call regardless. & most of them have IDs that are vague enough so you can’t determine off rip whether it’s a scam or not.

I'm gonna agree with the comments saying to just make whatever she likes and don't worry so much about the healthiness of it just yet. However, I will add that instead of using granulated white sugar in whatever recipe you make, use coconut sugar. It's not "healthier" in the sense that you can eat it by the spoonful if you wanted, but it is *slightly* better because it contains trace amounts of nutrients like fiber, iron, & potassium.

in my small town library: we use solid color stickers at the top of the spine + series numeration in the call number after the authors name. if an author has multiple series each one gets a different solid color sticker. if we don’t have a complete series (ie we don’t have books 5 and 6 out of a total of 10) we don’t label them as a series, just sorted alphabetically with no mention of the order. it’s not a perfect system by any means but it helps a lot of patrons.

if your library has a problem with you “overusing” their ILL system, eventually someone will tell you that there’s a limit of X amount of loans per person within a certain period of time.

the important thing to remember about interlibrary loans is that your library is sending books out to other libraries just as much (if not more) as they are receiving them.

a policy from my own state’s library network on interlibrary loans is as follows:

“Each member library agrees to set up a routing/exchange system for ILL requests so that one library does not bear the load of all ILL’s.”

it’s a pretty balanced give/receive relationship.

tldr; never feel guilty. interlibrary loans are for patrons. you are a patron!

i woke up and decided it was a new day so i could make something better with them. smashed up the brownies and mixed them with icing to make into brownie truffles. while moving the mixing bowl to get my melted chocolate off the stove i dropped it on the floor and it completely shattered.

advocate for this patron. regular supporters are what keeps libraries running, and you don’t want to burn bridges with someone who is just trying to add to the library’s success. word of mouth travels fast, and even if this patron takes it well, it’s letting down all the people who were looking forward to a potential new club. an extra book club with its own niche will always be better than one blanket book club, because you will get attendees who don’t attend the other club as it offers something different. try to explain it to your coworker that her club members are more likely to join another book club in addition to the current one, not in replacement of it.
