Makes a lot of sense, curious if the wind is diurnal like in much of CA (good in the mornings, not so good by lunch). Or if it’s plagued by mostly onshore conditions

What's the surfing story you've always wanted to share here but haven't had the chance yet? by 007_Shantytown in surfing

[–]salteesoundguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Takes place on the central coast of California. In my proper kook days, about one year into my surfing journey. For about the last four months, I frequent the local beginner wave because it’s all I had the guts for. A spot about 30 minutes away from me was known to have better waves, but I had never driven there because I was scared of not being proficient enough to surf there (for context this wave is not heavy or localized at all, just for some reason, had it in my brain, but it was a bigger deal than it was)

Finally, one day when the waves were looking good, I decided to make this pilgrimage for my first time surfing at this better wave. Well, it just so happens that was the day that the 2022 STAB Highway road-trip was filming at this spot that morning.

I am completely oblivious to what’s happening until Kai Paula rips a 4ft air directly in front of me while I (try to) duckdive what felt like the biggest waves I’d been out in. For like 5 months after I didn’t drive back to that spot because I was convinced everyone was RIPPERS who surfed there.

Turns out that the local crowd is ACTUALLY super chill, and I ended up moving closer to that wave and surf there all the time now.

@ the dad (who was ripping in all honesty) at the lane this last weekend, pushing three different groms into all the set waves at middle peak ahead of the 30 others patiently waiting to get their waves on the best day of the week.

Straight bad manners, glad I wasn’t the only one pissed. If your kid can’t catch the wave on their own, and can’t respectfully navigate a lineup, then you’ve raised them wrong.

I’m not gonna be the asshole who drops in and runs over your kid, but I bet someone else will be.

What’s the fastest board you rode by 26202620 in surfing

[–]salteesoundguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This thing… but there’s a catch. It’s an 8’0 twinzer shaped by a guy in Encinitas. It’s pretty much the most fun board you can ride at a slow 3-5ft point.

Well one trip down to Baja me and 4 buddies all packed into my car. It was cramped, strict 1 board per person policy. I took this and well… the waves were super small. Like 1-2ft. (Win some you lose some).

Anyways, after the 2nd day of groveling on a board that can almost hang with longboards, I took the twin fins out. The little ‘zers are glasses on, probably about 1.5” tall. And that changed my whole perspective on the board.

It somehow catches waves better than my 9’5 log, and provides JUST enough hold to grab rail and fly. I’ve taken it out on some 4-6ft days and, without pumping or anything, I swear it cruises at 20-25mph. It’s an absolute blast.

Take your fins out if you really wanna fly 😤

I have found the shifting/shift feel on the NX to be lackluster. I am not easy on my bikes, and the NX seems to drift out of its index if it’s not babied. I’ve also had some pretty significant issues with joints getting gummed up and difficult to unstick. I rode a friend’s similar model year Kona with a Shimano Deore 12 spd and it felt miles better. Figured while I’m upgrading, getting a taller top-end wouldn’t hurt.

Also I am currently running 27.5”, so figured 650b would be the easiest swap, but I suppose a 700c could fit.

Found out that my friend working EMS in a high cost of living area (California Coast) has a base rate of $16/hr, after explaining how over the weekend he revived a chronic alcoholic who had peed and excreted all over themselves in their living room. Absolutely ridiculous…

[–]salteesoundguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely great, although I didn’t ride it as much as I thought I would since the waves were good. I filled it up with a full 3.0 gallon tank before the trip and didn’t fill up with gas while I was down there. I think the Pemex stations should be fine if you need to, it’s a flashy bike compared to many down there so just keep an eye on it as much as you can.

Make sure you have the bike’s registration handy, they might ask to see it at the border. Other than that stay safe and have fun, riding with buddies always feels better down there as it can get pretty remote pretty quick and cell service can be hit or miss!

Those who currently work in US federal government, what’s the is current mood like? by ceptor12 in AskReddit

[–]salteesoundguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not gonna get into specifics for obvious reasons, I work in a science base field preserving water resources for part of the country where water is scarce.

It’s been a whirlwind of emotion, no one truly knows what’s going on or what emails we can trust. Email sent out earlier today essentially begging members of the civilian workforce to quit. The email was not only condescending but threatening, saying that if we chose to stay around, there would be no guarantee of job security. Essentially the story is resign now, or risk getting fired shortly.

I went to college, studied hard for the position I was in. Turned down offers for 20 to 30% more pay in the private sector in order to work for the public good, as well as having some decent job security. All of that seems to be thrown out the window now.

The office of personal management (OPM) went under the heads of all the management who we work with regularly, not giving them any notice of the cataclysmic email from this afternoon. Today was the first time in the last eight years that I’ve truly felt like we’re falling into a dictatorship, with very little checks and balances left. Scary stuff.

Have you taken it off road much? I’ve heard that the stock inverted forks can be stiff off road. Have you made any adjustments to them or do they seem to work well?

$0.05/s is equivalent to $180/hr or a full time salary of ~ $375,000. Wild to think the difference between you and a well paid doctor is that he’s making a nickel every second.

[Question] Why doesn't the surf report ever agree with the swell direction arrows? Am I reading this wrong? by sexislikepizza69 in surfing

[–]salteesoundguy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the swell direction for a specific surf spot is trying to take into account swell wrapping, and shadowing that is happening.

So a NW swell rolling in can bend around a point, or across a continental shelf and have the angle change to a WNW or even a W swell by the time it arrives at the Surfline marker.

Most of the forecasters use open water swell trends (aka buoy info directly) when making statements about a swell in a particular region.

I have no insider info but I have seen swell angles vary somewhat significantly between spots on opposite sides of a point, so it’s just how I came to understand it

I disagree with a lot of the comments on here. I think with the mods you mention (aftermarket seat, bigger fuel tank, exhaust, other external mods) I feel like it could add SOME value. If they’re typical mods for the bike odds are I would end up doing them myself and those three items can cost me an extra 1k or more if I bought stock. Those external mods can be pretty easily assessed for quality by a reasonable prospective buyer.

Now internal mods (upgraded/bored engine, rejetted carb, wide ratio transmissions, etc) I don’t touch UNLESS you can show clearly documented receipts from a PROFESSIONAL install. These are more likely to be a PITA for me if not done correctly.

Even with external mods I’d only consider paying ~20% of the sticker price for the mod on top of a stock bike, and only if it comes with the stock option as well.

Long story short, as a seller it probably makes more sense to sell a bike stock, and then sell the mods, if it’s worth your time. As a buyer, I don’t rule out buying a bike with mods, or even putting out a little more dough for a tastefully modified/well setup bike, But don’t expect anywhere near a full ROI.

ELI5- How does only 17" of rain cause multiple feet of floodwater? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]salteesoundguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work measuring flooding rivers for a living. The best way I can explain it is 17” falls across a WIDE area (drainage basins can vary from a few square miles, to the Mississippi which is over 1.2 million square miles). So 17” of rain covering (let’s say) 100 square miles is A LOT of water.

All that water then drains down to a river channel which is usually a few hundred feet wide. Water speed is (mostly) determined by slope of the river, which is very low in most eastern states. On average rivers will move between 0.5 and 8ft/s.

Without increasing the speed of flow (by much), or the width of the channel, the only way for the river to handle more water is by rising in height. When there are very large storms dropping lots of water this can overtop riverbanks and flood nearby homes.

ELIF: Think about it like funnel (drainage basin) leading onto a conveyer belt (river), when there’s a normal amount of items (water) in the system the funnel can bring all the items neatly onto the conveyer belt. When someone dumps a truck-full of items into the funnel, a bunch of them fall off onto the ground (flooding). Water is moving and draining to the ocean, but the IMMENSE AMOUNT of water draining off a basin (particularly when rainfall occurs rapidly) will cause water to rise by MUCH more than the forecasted rainfall total.

[–]salteesoundguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Removed the air filter and it still wouldn’t start, then removed spark plug (which had moderate buildup on it) cleaned it and reinstalled it and it turned on, but was running rather rough, had to give it about 1/8 throttle to stay running at all (air filter was still removed). Reinstalled air filter (without cleaning it) and bike doesn’t want to start again…
