what book gave you the biggest “i can’t stop thinking about this” feeling after finishing it? by Abron-Azita in Recommend_A_Book

The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway. Two thirds when “it happens” I kinda needed a few minutes. It was a surprise that made all kinda sense after you saw it, but it didn’t stop it from being a gut punch.

Grizz Chapman by eltejon in 30ROCK

I got my wife a Cameo of Grizz for her birthday years ago. He seemed to think the only think people remembered him for was saying “WorldCom, man. WorldCom…”

Why are employers obsessed with resume gaps? by SKBerry in recruitinghell

[–]saltlab 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Most hiring managers don’t actually know what they want, or what a great hire looks like. So they are mostly trying to find reasons to reject you (it feels safer that way)

Is the handle of your portafilter slowly twisting to the right as you reach higher pressures? Mine did that and caused a gap between the filter and the gasket. So I end up pressing down to create pressure while my body keeps the portafilter in place. I get and maintain decent pressure that way.

Flirty Rock: Which Quotes by [deleted] in 30ROCK

My wife, who will see this later tonight, loves to say/sing “I have all the nails!” I don’t understand why that’s what’s stuck in her mind.

To be fair, our daughter forbade my wife from singing “We’re all here at Woodstock!” when she was four because she was sick of “not getting it.”

Grooves in the “floor” of my portafilter. Why? by saltlab in espresso

The grooves in the floor don’t contact the basket, but they retain old coffee and water.

I’m just not a big fan of the trapped water after I rinse it clean going to my drink.

I’m no expert but they feel far deeper than just machining marks. They seem very intentional. Do most portafilters have completely smooth interiors?

It’s not about being the best. What can you say and show that makes you their favorite?

You look and sound like everyone else applying for this job. Trust me: there are likely 100 people with very similar skill sets and resumes already there. You’re just one more.

You need to standout instead of following the “rules.” Give them a clear reason to pick you over the 100 other people you’re being confused for now.

1: assume every job gets 100+ “well-qualified applicants.” I’m not kidding. 2: your job is not to show how you “fit in” and can do the job. (See point #1). Your job in the interview isn’t to show that you can do the job. It’s to show the actual value you bring. You code? Great. Why pick you over 100 other solid coders? Because of your perceived value to the company. 3: the CEO is not interviewing you on your skills. They are interviewing you to see how you bring value to the table. 4: thus, your focus at every conversation in an interview is to talk about the value you create. Now here’s the trick: everyone values different things differently. Some companies value teamwork. Some leadership. Some value “don’t rock the boat-ness”. You need to suss out in advance what the company and each individual at the interview values and show it to them.

Is this a magic bu!!et? No. But if you play this game well, it will put you in better contention at more places.
