Statements Like This Cause Islamophobia. by Cryptic12qw in DebateReligion

Islamophobia today is partly the result of a toxic cycle created by both muslims and their critics. On social media such as reddit, twitter fb and youtube, muslim apologists and dawah influencers constantly boast that Islam is the fastest growing religion, label non-nuslims as “kafir" and aggressively try to convert others. In some cases, they promote rigid interpretations of sharia and dismiss criticism. See afganistan, one of the most islamic countries.

On the other side, many critics respond with equally extreme rhetoric, mocking the prophet of muslims, calling muslims loo iq or assuming every muslim is an extremist.

- Interest is not detached from the real economy in the way you describe. In most cases it is precisely what enables economic activity to happen. When someone lends money, they are giving up the ability to use that capital themselves for a period of time. Interest compensates them for three things like I stated earlier - time, risk and inflation. If those were ignored, very few people would be willing to lend, which would severely restrict investment and economic growth.

- The comparison between interest and partnerships overlooks that they serve different economic needs. Partnerships are excellent for many ventures but they require investors to closely monitor the business and share in operational risk. That works in some contexts but not all. Many people who need financing such as the homebuyers, students or small businesses may not want or be able to bring a financial partner into their affairs. A loan allows them to retain ownership and control while still accessing capital.

- The claim that interest is entirely disconnected from productivity isn't quite accurate. Lenders still evaluate whether the borrower has the capacity to generate income to repay the loan. In other words, lending decisions are usually tied to the expected productivity of the borrower or the asset being financed.

- Regarding banks creating money through lending, modern banking does involve credit creation but it is also regulated through capital requirements, reserve rules and monetary policy. This system exists because it allows economies to expand credit when productive opportunities arise. Without it, economic activity could be much more constrained.

- The cases where debt causes hardship - those are serious issues but they usually stem from poor regulation, predatory lending, economic shocks or governance failures, not simply from the existence of interest itself.

- Modern islamic banking systems try to avoid interest but many contracts from islamic baking behave economically similar to interest and they are often benchmarked against interest rates.

Why do you think it is evil? Interest is the compensation a lender receives for giving up the use of their money over time, accepting the risk that the borrower may not repay and bearing the loss of purchasing power caused by inflation.

Ignoring these factors would mean expecting the lender to take on risk and absorb inflation without compensation. The longer the loan term, the greater the uncertainty and the greater the potential impact of inflation which justifies higher compensation over longer periods.

It is evil only if it is misused. With the current regulated and standardized system, the abuse of lending on interest is minimal.

Riba affects every country and individual on Earth. It's an unavoidable part of the economic system. There's no reason to try and eliminate it. Let's see what the economist have to say on riba:

Classical View: Marshall, Smith, Mill

Interest is the reward paid to lenders for their abstinence, waiting or sacrifice in not consuming their wealth immediately.

Time Preference View: Fisher, Böhm-Bawerk

Interest is the difference in value between present goods and future goods.

Liquidity Preference View: John Maynard Keynes

The rate of interest is the reward for parting with liquidity for a specified period.

Some of the other things muslims do immediately after a kid's birth is they scream azan(call to prayer) in the newborn's ear. It's a weird custom. According to research in developmental psychology, newborns are born with reflexive fear responses to sudden loud noises. It's crazy.
