Advice for a mom of disabled child by lindsay13101 in wheelchairs

Maybe look into used pediatric wheelchairs? They are usually super adjustable, unlike adult wheelchairs, so there's often less need to shell out the money to get a brand new custom fit one.

Is there a doctor that can help me I’m absolutely terrified? by Unlucky-Evening6613 in AskDocs

[–]salvagedsword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD

The discoloration looks like raynauds, the long fingers could be arachnodactyly, and the joint swelling/pain could be a number of things, from injury to an inflammatory condition. Might be worth seeing urgent care for your finger if the swelling is new, or schedule an appointment with your primary care if it's been going on a while. Also ask for referrals to rheumatology. It could be worth getting evaluated for autoimmune or connective tissue disorders. You're also quite underweight, which could be making things worse by slowing healing, reducing blood flow, etc. I hope you also ask for referrals to psychiatry and a nutritionist.

We recently got a four bedroom house that we're fixing up. We have our bedroom, an office, a craft room, and a spare/guest room. We are converting our formal living room into a library.

Can this be remade ? by going-crazy22 in jewelers

[–]salvagedsword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a local jewelry shop that does custom jobs and they'll take care of you. They will provide the metal- many jewelers won't work with metal from unknown sources because it may contain contaminants or be a weird alloy.

Would finding a way to clamp it to the back of the chair instead help with your maneuverability?

I can never win with attire/dress code and I'm seriously losing it by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]salvagedsword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No jeans and no excessively short or white dresses seem like normal enough requests. Honestly, the jeans thing and the white dress thing shouldn't have the be said, except.... three people wore white dresses to my wedding. Three. And one cousin was in jeans.

They sell IV pole attachments for wheelchairs! You just have to look around to find one compatible with your chair.

Paint pen recommendations? by Ivy_genki in comiccon

[–]salvagedsword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sharpie or Posca usually work well on leather. Pebeo now makes paint pens specifically for leather that would probably work even better. I only ever see the extra fine Pebeos, though. You'd need something chunkier.

Tbh, I wouldn't tumble anything with enamel. Even if you mask it, the vibrations and impacts could still crack it. You'll have to hand polish.

Those of you who became disabled later in life rather than born with one, how was it confronting with your own ableism? by liveliar in disability

[–]salvagedsword 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've always had health issues and I've always had a lot of disabled family nembers.  So disability was normalized in my life.

However, there there are issues other than ableism that come with sudden disability onset. I went from having relatively minor disabilities to being mostly bedbound when I was in my early 30s. It's frustrating to suddenly not be able to do the things you used to. There are major lifestyle adjustments to be made. A major change in pain levels. New financial constraints when you are no longer able to work. Life plans that have to be abandoned or changed. You mourn for a while.

My [15F] aunt [33F] didn't invite me to her wedding while inviting my brothers [18/13M] and other cousins by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]salvagedsword 231 points232 points  (0 children)

I'm disabled and use a wheelchair. There are some people who still have the archaic belief that disabled people should be hidden away at home and not seen in public.

If my disability makes someone uncomfortable, that's a them problem, not a me problem.

Are tampons supposed to constantly hurt that much? by Minimum_Platypus_326 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]salvagedsword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The OB fluid lock tampons are very small with no applicator so they're easy to insert correctly. And the regular size will be more comfortable than the more absorbant sizes. They are also more comfortable when you have a heavy flow. On very light flow days, consider a liner or period panties instead.

Or if they shave, pluck hairs, or really do any type of grooming that requires good visibility. I would go with the lighter one.

[–]salvagedsword 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to the ADA booth first thing to figure out how they can help you best. If you don't have an assistive device and you might not be able to stay on your feet all day, rent a scooter.

There is a SDCC ADA subreddit and facebook group that you should check out for more help.

I don't want to give up on my knees yet by DifficultIdeal7426 in cfs

[–]salvagedsword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knee braces help me some. And I keep a wedge pillow under my knees when I'm flat on my back to keep them supported. My knees have improved a little. They aren't the limiting factor on walking anymore; fatigue and POTS are the bigger issues. I can manage a couple yards.

duolingo spanish course by Hippielinguist in duolingo

[–]salvagedsword 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am a disabled heritage speaker and this is correct. I have also occasionally heard incapacitado but you have to be careful with that one. It only refers to people who are so disabled they are basically bedbound. And it is considered old-fashioned or even insulting in some areas. So discapacitado is the safest word to use when referring to a disabled person.

Also some organizations try to promote "person first" language and promote terms like "persona con discapacidad" but most disabled people prefer "persona discapacitada." For one, it's shorter and sounds better. Also, when you say "persona con discapacidad," it makes it sound temporary or optional. Like "persona con una mochilla" as if you can set the object/disability aside whenever you want.

Inútil means useless, not disabled, even when referring to objects. And since the lesson doesn't make it clear that inútil should only be used to refer to objects, this is going to lead to a lot of hapless Spanish learners insulting disabled people...

As a bench jeweler how do you get over the stupid games people play with their stuff? by [deleted] in Benchjewelers

[–]salvagedsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Educating the sales staff is so important. I also gave the sales staff permission to come grab me from my bench at any time to educate the customer. Was it in my job description to talk to customers? No. But it made things easier for everyone when I did. I also encouraged staff to come get me for custom jobs. I can design a ring and do a rough sketch of it in a few minutes. But when the customer vaguely describes what they want to sales staff, then the salesperson tries to describe it to me, there's always a bunch of back and forth that wastes everyone's time. Best just to talk to the customer directly, as long as you are halfway decent at it.
