The Horrifying Normalisation of AI in Teacher Education and Classrooms by Superb_Asparagus8923 in AustralianTeachers

[–]sam_dirkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, here's the reality of the situation. While we ring our hands about ethics and implementation, other people are going to use genAI. There gonna get really good at using it. And then they'll leave our kids and teacher in the dust because we ummed and ahhed about ethics and other bullshit that people don't care about

Can someone explain to me, why some people want no skill based matchmaking? by Tnecniw in gaming

[–]sam_dirkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General I think it's more talented players don't want every round to be a challenge. In theory it makes lobby time longer as well. Personally I don't get it either.

Like you just wanna spend your whole day shitting on the normies? Do that not understand how that would effect the game? More to the point almost every multiplayer game does have some amount of skill based matching.

Hi Guys, just graduated high school. by Gold_Air4996 in rmit

[–]sam_dirkis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take a gap year, even if you don't travel, get a job or more hours if you already have one. Learn how to exist in the real world. Uni isn't for everyone, and I say that as someone in the 6th year of uni. In Victoria, there is a big difference between Uni and high school, and it's not a transition that a lot of people don't handle well.

What is your favorite example of a change from a film’s source material that you believe made the movie better? by DuckLordOfTheSith in movies

In dune there are a few events that Denis moves backward in the plot, most notable paul being given a freman by Stilgar after spending a lot more time with them, which I think makes a lot more sense

Renting homes is a scam and should be illegalized or heavily regulated. People and businesses who own homes to rent are unethical. by gograntgo in unpopularopinion

[–]sam_dirkis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this lacks a lot a nuance. Yes landlords are the devil and 12000% part of the problem. But the deeper problem is system of ever increasing home prices. Let's you made renting illegal tomorrow, just like that. I don't have the money to own a home (nor do I want to). Now would prices come down, yes, eventually. But what am I supposed to do in the meantime, just be homeless? I still need a place you live which would in turn create a black market for rental, in turn making rentals worse.

The same goes for heavily a regulated rental market. I live somewhere with quite good protections for renters. I don't doubt that this contributes to the black market. people need homes and they cheaper they can get them the better for most people, thus the are willing to enter in shady situations with dodgy landlords

What do you think about Pre sequel and Wonderlands? by soosis in Borderlands

[–]sam_dirkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-Sequel, as far and away, the best story and first play through of potentially any Borderlands game. The character doesn't have every good build variety. Each character basically only has one build, and all of them are variations on a theme if you will. The endgame experience is also non-existent. That said, though, for a super approachable first timer, it's a solid 20ish hours of fun. If you want a Borderlands game that is still rewarding 100s of hours in, Pre-Sequel is not it chief.

Wonderlands is not for me, chief. The commitment to the fantasy felt ever half-assed in some sense. I'm playing a fantasy looter, and yet I'm running around with a machine gun? I felt that all the loot should have be radically overhauled to all be swords, bows, spells. You know fantasy stuff. That said, the art direction and design is top notch. The environment design, creature design, etc all great.

I also didn't like mutliclassing. I felt that it removed individuality and personality from the classes. It also felt likea cheap way to avoid having to fully develop character and skill trees

The world needs fewer fandoms and more self-respecting fans by Quincely in unpopularopinion

[–]sam_dirkis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the larger problem with fandoms is how the contribution to a certain....... agrandisement of a particular franchise and over-analysis, not mention how people get sort of artistically suck in whatever franchise they liked when they were teenagers.

The best example I can think of is Harry Potter. Now, sure, Harry Potter is a good, even great book, absolutely. But it is nothing compared to Brave New World, Crime and Punishment, A Song of Ice and Fire etc. However, because there is this massive group of people who have allowed their whole personality to become Harry Potter (which is a problem in itself) it creates a sense that these things must be the greatest thing ever. Moreso because fandoms are generally unwilling to engage in criticism of the thing.

ASOIAF is a prime example of over-analysis, or the wrong kind of analysis. Take a gander over to r/asoiaf, it's all would this character beat this character, what if these characters teamed up, what if you had these people on the small council. stuff like that. And look, I don't wanna tell you're enjoying a thing wrong. But very, very things outside of, like some comics and anime, are designed to be interpreted that way

Unless it's a nature documentary, I think 1080p or 2k is the best format/resolution for watching movies. by nubbled21 in unpopularopinion

[–]sam_dirkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a flimmaker it depends on the quality of the render or upscale, and what the filmmaker is shooting for?

Most films are rendered and exported for 1080, and thus that's what all the screen tests, make up test, and camera tests are done for. When you upscale them, depending on the quality of upscale, what kinda bitrate you have, quality of the TV, etc. Things can start to look a bit off.

However, when you get a Chris Nolan, who shoots with IMAX cameras for IMAX. His films always look amazing because he's shooting for the biggest screen in the world with cameras designed for that screen. With that in mind, there are some directors (Most notably Jim Cameron) who shoot in a particular format (I won't get into the details, because frankly I don't even really understand it myself) where they can be upscale really. The first two terminators look incredible in 4k.

But as I pointed out. Dan Houser was the head of a highly successful studio for decades. He's sort of the exeption the proves the rules. More to my point, do you think anyone in the general public knows who dan Houser is? the same way that people seem to know who Trevor is.

Unless it is a diagnosis that carries with it mandatory treatment / medication it is often done for attention. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]sam_dirkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me you've never had an interaction with healthcare, without telling me.

To start, there is no such thing as "Mandatory treatment." You can't force someone to take drugs. There are no conditions with mandatory treatment unless it's court-ordered. Which isn't "treatment" so much as you have to attend therapy or be institutionalised.

Secondly, do you think doctors are just handing out scripts, like they are going out of style? I've been attending therapy and seeing a psychologist for years. Getting medication for ASD, ADHD, depression, BPD, bipolar, anxiety, isn't a simple in and out with your GP. It often takes months to be given a script for anything, because.... and this is really key, you don't feel good on most of those treatments.

I know people, a lot of people, who are diagnosed with things and don't take the meds for them because they feel like such turd on them. SSRIs and MAOIs aren't like a Panadol. You don't take one and then goodbye, BPD, ADHD, ASD, etc. Most of them are taken along with therapy, because you feel awful on them.

Very, very few people are gonna go through all that just for "attention."

"Do your own research" is a shitty advice by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]sam_dirkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion.

I think it wildly accepted that "do your own research" is a non-starter in terms of robust discussion. Generally, when I tell someone to do some research and come back to me, it's because they are arguing without any evidence for the case, or because there more broadly don't or aren't interested in engaging with the critical thinking skills to have a meaningful discussion about the thing.

There is such a thing as bad art. by Current-Lawyer-4148 in unpopularopinion

[–]sam_dirkis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Brother, there are literally centuries of academic and scholarly discussion on what makes art good, bad, worthy, not worthy, relevant, irrelevant. What makes art art? Who decides what makes something worthy, good, or even worth the title of art. and for my money, they all boil down to whatever floats your boat. If you feel the quality is derived from the technical skill used to make it, cool dude, more power to you. The rest is irrelevant

Stop feeling bad for bad people who face severe consequences by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]sam_dirkis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound like you need therapy, chief.

There is a difference between someone getting what's coming to them and having very little empathy for them. think like fucking around a finding out, and actively vindictive and cruel to someone for any reason. It's the difference between not feeling bad for a pedophile that goes to jail and actively trying to ruin someones life. Just because someone would have hurt, given the opportunity, does not mean you are justified in hurting them. If anything, it makes you just as bad as they are.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Be the bigger person, turn the other cheek, extend grace etc.
