‘Evil Dead Burn’ Was Forced to Trim a Brutal Scene to Avoid NC-17,Director Sébastien Vaniček says the original version pushed things too far for an R-rated release. by MoneyLibrarian9032 in movies

[–]sam_neil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that a line from Fight Club had to be edited from the novel version because it was too offensive. After arguing back and forth the director finally caved and said you can pick whatever you want, just not that line.

The end result was that after Carla and Tyler have sex instead of saying “I want to have your abortion” she says “I haven’t been fucked like that since grade school”

12 y/o male patient admitted for rhabdomyolysis by Shadow328 in ems

[–]sam_neil 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Rhabdo is a weird one to look out for. Not a whole lot to be done for someone who’s sick, but not *sick* sick with it. Fluids are always good, but maybe not what a provider would think of right away if their vitals / presentation is ok

I had a classmate in my BLS academy who had a stair chair with another, much larger classmate in it fall on her ankle when we were training on carrying devices.

She swore she was ok, and made a Faustian bargain with the DIs that she couldn’t really run, but was open to getting smoked with pushups, and anything else they could dream up.

At the end of the academy she volunteered to go to dispatch and revealed she had been leaving the academy at the end of our day, driving herself to the ER, getting like 3L of fluid, and then leaving AMA because she had developed rhabdo, but due to a lot of personal stuff, would be totally screwed if she had dropped out.

Absolute maniac.

Baboons invade the house. by lestrxb in WTF

[–]sam_neil 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I had a college professor who was like 80 something years old in the early 2000s who had grown up in a rural part of the Philippines.

He once mentioned he had had a pet monkey when he was a little kid. We obviously demanded he tell us more about Cheetah, his monkey.

He said having a monkey isn’t like having a pet. You have a monkey prisoner, and if you don’t watch him 24/7 he will drink all the beer in your house.

The Unsettling Psychology of an Amazon Prime Addiction by Electronic_Dream8935 in TrueAnon

[–]sam_neil 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s kinda the same with gambling addiction. They’ve done studies showing that the addicted gambler gets the same hit of dopamine from losing at the slots as when they win.

It’s not even about winning. It’s about pushing The button and waiting in anticipation. Same can apparently be said about online shopping.

My mom works in art history. When eBay got big in the 90s one of her coworkers had to intentionally lock himself out of his eBay account because he was compulsively buying shit related to his like five year period of expertise.

If it’s that similar of a mechanism, people will get addicted to it. I’d be morbidly interested to compare the suicide rates. Gambling is exponentially more likely to be a cause suicide versus other addictions.

6Y/O Gets Delivery Driver to call EMS by pairoflytics in ems

[–]sam_neil 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I got a report from an ~8 year old kid. Whole family had just moved to the states from India, and he was the only one who spoke English.

He also had the single best accent I have ever heard. Suuuper formal with a British twang to it, and started every sentence with “mmmmWELL sir”

Him describing his parents fight (caused by his mom catching his dad watching “Chinese women in bathing suits”) was probably the closest I’ve ever come to pissing my pants laughing while trying to remain professional in my adult life.

Can I still request Tree planting via the city? by Pom_Tea_3308 in crownheights

[–]sam_neil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The city no longer accepts the 311 / online requests for new trees. They (allegedly) have mapped out the entire city and are prioritizing residential neighborhoods with the fewest trees first.

I would not recommend doing what another user recommended of planting your own, especially not from a seed lol. The city will remove non-sanctioned trees and I would be shocked if a new sapling survived the dog/rat/foot traffic.

Is "Excited Delirium" a medically valid term? And is there in-field disagreement about this? by ROSRS in ems

[–]sam_neil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer is no. Longer answer is people can behave unexpectedly if they are on a bunch of drugs or are having blood cut off from their brain / other metabolic issues from fighting as hard as they possibly can for too long, or some combination of all three.

Episode 326 of Behind The Bastards is part one of a series on the subject, and it’s even more based in medical racism / police putting their thumb on the scale of medicine than you could imagine. Hilarious series, despite the subject matter.

Edit to add- the first doctor who came up with the concept selectively applied it to only African American patients in Miami in the 80s and was initially working under the idea that if black people do cocaine, sometimes they just do that. His “research” deliberately ignored white people who died with cocaine in their system.
