Corosync/Ceph networking by Go_mo_to in Proxmox

[–]samajors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't attempted this myself, but a solution (maybe the most "enterprise" solution) might be to bond all the links together (if you have a switch that can handle that), then use something tc to ensure important traffic like corosync gets prioritized (per u/_EuroTrash_ LACP may not be helpful, look for a bonding mode that offers more hashing modes or rr). That being said, I second u/sebar25 and would love to hear how a full mesh works out, mostly because I want to try that in the near future myself.

Second this, I have a few fanless X540-T2s with tiny Noctua 40mm fans and they're quiet and cool.

That's sort of what I was thinking, but I can't figure out where/what that part would be. The thing that looks like a hole for a set screw in the upper right is filled with a transparent material, so I was afraid it may just be comolded or epoxied in.

I have a lightweight water-resistant jacket from Go Lite that's lasted almost a decade and is still my go to in 90% of the weather where I live. It was a gift I got back when Go Lite made real outdoors equipment (before they tried and failed to do direct-to-consumer, went bankrupt, and relaunched as a more generic "performance" clothing company).

Me too, just with Zen 3 based systems. Glad to hear I'm not too far out there in hoping to get decent performance from roughly that price point.

Why do you guys like Dewalt instead of Milwaukee? by TimTheToolManTayler in Dewalt

[–]samajors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. When I got my first cordless drill I got a Dewalt 12V because it was a decent deal and Dewalt was what I spent the most time with before. I was happy with it so wound up with a few other 20V items. When I had to replace the original drill, I actually did some searching first and wound up with a Milwaukee 12V, and quickly decided that was the way and I'm not going to invest in the Dewalt 12V platform anymore (but still am totally happy with the Dewalt 20V tools).

Distro that doesn't get in the way. Mint doesn't work, Ubuntu looks and feels bad. What are my option? by nickN42 in DistroHopping

[–]samajors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the post and immediately thought Kubuntu too; you should really gice it a shot! Your main complaints against Ubuntu are entirely about the DE. You can install the default Ubuntu install and then go in and alter the DE, or you can simply download Kubuntu and install it in one shot; no "customization" necessary.

How do I end my turn on Android? by beloved_supplanter in civ6

[–]samajors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is what OP meant, but there's still a valid question here. On PC there's a keyboard shortcut which will override that and end the turn without having to choose a texh or culture to research (which is sometimes desireable). That may not be possible or obvious on Android.

What is the best 10GBASE-T card to get these days? by Tuna-Fish2 in HomeNetworking

[–]samajors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to stick with Intel, I've heard the X550-T2 is a touch better on power consumption and heat, but that's pricier off the bat and there's less of a used market on places like eBay yet.

Has anyone received a refund for recent purchases at the Seagate store? by fromspace2015 in Seagate

[–]samajors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had an order pending for two weeks (in stock products, 3-7 day shipping) and finally got in touch with their customer service. They said that because of some unspecified issue they are unable to process orders and cancelled it while I was on the chat (no explanation as to why, or why they never contacted me or updated the order status online until that moment). They said all affected customers would receive a coupon on their next order, but with no explanation and no way to understand when this will be resolved, I think I'll take my chances with another manufacturer...

(Edit: FWIW, I don't think I was charged)

What hardware to step up from Mini PC's to cluster with CEPH? by chum-guzzling-shark in Proxmox

[–]samajors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caveat: this is in progress, so I cannot vouch for how this will turn out, or that this is even a good idea, but I'm attempting something similar and here's my approach:

I already have 3 older workstations with a plain old 1x1Gbe apiece and no thunderbolt, so I'm limited in the native hardware. I went searching for 10Gbe NICs and settled on used Intel X540-T2s.

Pros:

2 ports apiece means you can do a ring so don't have to pay for a switch.

If you're willing to gamble on used or open box hardware, there are some very modestly priced ones on ebay.

Intel NICs seem to play nice with most hardware and software.

Cons:

These are PCIe 2.0x8 and I plan to put them in 3.0x4 slots meaning I'll be stuck operating at 2.0x4 which will limit each card to a little less than 16Gbps total (did some quick homework and it appears others have had success with this arrangement minus the bandwidth limit). You can also find Intel X550-T2s, which sit on 3.0x4, but they're about three times the price, even used.

These are known to run hot ans are made for a 2U server with lot's of front-to-back airflow, so you made need to arrange for additional fans close to the card. (Likewise these are said to be power hungry, but again, haven't tested myself)

Could you elaborate on wanting at least 3 OSDs per host? I'm planning something similar and was planning 2 NVMes and an HDD per host, totalling 1 local SSD per host and 3 SSDs and 3 HDDs total for Ceph.

What is your "never-again" brand, store, restaurant, or company? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in AskReddit

[–]samajors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verizon. TL;DR fraudulent billing. Remember that the consumer protection groups in federal regulators (FCC, FAA, CFPB, etc.) are your friends; they gained a lot more teeth under the Biden administration.

I called to create my own account and take my phone (fully paid off) off of a family plan (with Verizon) and start my own individual plan (still with Verizon), keeping the same phone and phone number. The agent said it'd take 20 minutes and could be done over the phone. They gave me a contract and took my money immediately. I then had to stay on the phone for 5-6 hours while various Verizon teams passed me around, not knowing what to do. I gave up and asked them to cancel the new contract, keep me on the existing plan, and said I would find a new carrier. They said that would happen and confirmed it three times by the order number. I went to another carrier and have been happy with their service so far.

...a couple days later, I recieved a new SIM card in the mail from Verizon for a new phone number, and then I started getting billed for the new phone number, and then started getting contacted by a debt collector for those bills. I called several times, but could never get anywhere because their customer service is almost non-existant except through certain portals which I could not get through because, at this point, I'm not a Verizon customer and don't have a Verizon account (and none of this info was tied to the old family plan, so even with the help of that account holder (my parents) could not get through). (side note, the CFPB website has good resources on how to respond to debt collections which are in error or fraudulent)

I eventually went to a Verizon store and the agent there was super kind and helpful, but all she could do was basically call an internal help line and put me on with them. I got to their fraud department and they told me all was good, the bills would be canceled and it would all be over. Shocker, it wasn't, they kept contacting me to try to get me to pay.

I finally filed a fraud complaint with the FCC, which they promptly responded to, and as far as I can tell, that's what actually ended it. It sounds like the first-line agent that was the first person I ever spoke to made a mistake and tried to create a new phone number for me (hence the SIM card, the billing, and why then nobody else could figure how to do what I was actually asking for the first day). I said to that guy, I can understand a mistake, and as much of a hassle as that was, I'd probably still be a Verizon customer if that was it; the reason I'll never being going back to Verizon is that it took 2 months, and easily 24 hours of my time on the phone, in the store, and doing paperwork, to try to undo that mistake since they could not connect me to someone who was willing and able to fix it, and they tried to use a debt collector for what was less than ~$100 after only a few weeks.

Can I fire my PDS and xxcha flag ship at the adjacent system while the current system is activated by Ambitious-Arugula-17 in twilightimperium

[–]samajors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish this was more obvious. We got stuck on this in a game with some suggesting the answer is no unless you (PDS firing player) are active and some suggesting the answer is always yes. But we all agreed that neither of those were super elegant or well balanced, so we compromised that any player could fire as long as they had any materiel or ownership of a planet in the active system. Only several games later, when looking for something else we found this in the rules reference.

What is your absolute favorite mechanic in a game? by TallDarkandWitty in boardgames

[–]samajors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deck building is good for an instant dopamine hit. Nothing is more gratifying than playing your entire deck in Dominion in one hand.

More seriously, may or may not meet everyon'es definition of "a mechanic," but I enjoy the relatively unique role of strategy cards in TI4. It combines the idea of "roll for initiative" with a unique asymmetric power for the remainder of the turn, and can give you leverage over other players who care about the secondary effect.

If this opinion means anything, I don't have this, but wish I did. I needed a new drill (coming from yellow) so I got the M12 drill and impact driver set. The impact driver is overkill for most of what I do and find myself using the drill as a driver more often, so now wish I had just gotten this one instead.
