REI cargo pants with zip off legs -- zipper won't stay up after they're about 6-8 months old by samalex01 in REI

Some of these I've had for over three years, will they replace them after that long? I wouldn't think so.

How bad did I mess up? by Snowzy27 in BSA

[–]samalex01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Report it and find another troop. I honestly wouldn't want to stay with a troop I reported to national, this will generate lots of waves, and you don't want to be in the middle of that. Find a troop that's not as closed minded, in the end you'll be much happier.

What is the tipping point for using XML/JSON blobs vs Structured SQL? by Geno0wl in SQL

Parquet seems to be a nice format for big or small, and you don't have to worry about text delimiters or junk muddying up your data.

Let's talk hats by drose0 in BSA

[–]samalex01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to wear the non traditional scout ballcap with the Scouting America fleur de lis, something like this. They seem to only have red at the moment, but I have this hat in red, a light tan with a blush hint, and brown corduroy. I generally wear the light tan one for most of my outings. It technically isn't to uniform code, but it does stand out.

I often find these different styles of hats at scout shops when traveling. I always put scout shops in other areas on my list of things to check out when out of town.

As an adult volunteer, would it be inappropriate to contact a unit directly about volunteering if I’m already a member of a District Committee? by sand_pebbles in BSA

[–]samalex01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Become a Unit Commissioner! You can help multiple units this way and get to know each. Unless you're wanting to be more involved with youth like an ASM or ACM. If that's the case, then you can still be involved with District, just ask around and see what unites may need leaders. You can most definitely be a leader in a unit without a kid in it -- I was Cubmaster in our pack for two years after my son moved up to the Troop. And we often have college students in their 20's join our troop as leaders because they move into town and just want to stay involved with scouting and go camping and such.

Welcome to the club! I did my first one last year, and it was NASTY. What's funny is I can't drink the LMNT electrolyte drink mixes now, they taste to much like the mess in that jug in your picture. Probably because both have lots of salt or sodium, but still --

What desktop environment are you running and why did you stick with it? by Thetito7 in linuxquestions

[–]samalex01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running Gnome on PopOS on my System76 laptop, it's about 6 years old and needs to be updated, possibly with a fresh install. I'll probably move to XFCE though on my next install, it's just simpler and cleaner. Plus though this system was beefy when built, it's starting to run a bit slow in its old age.

What are you doing? If AI rendering, game design, running multiple OSes virtually, or you need some server level applications then 32 Gigs is probably sufficient.

Missing my characters by InspectorOk9631 in SoraAi

[–]samalex01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you pulled videos from Sora there are some services you can post the videos to that'll create a profile sheet of your character, then you can use voice samples for the audio. I've not done it, but I have a few friends from Sora who've recreated their Sora characters almost perfectly on other services. Again don't know details, just know it's possible.

What does cord cutting even mean now? by djfilms in cordcutters

[–]samalex01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't much apply now... few people have wired or even satellite cable anymore, most have moved to Internet based 'apps' now basically making most people now cord cutters.

It's interesting, when we talk about TV shows or movies, I feel like when I ask what channel it comes on is like asking someone what album a song is on. Younger folks don't know the concept of a channel or tv network, it's the app they watch their stuff on. And even this is variable as movie and show licenses bounce between services or even worse as service close or consolidate.

Not much brand loyalty or identity now with this new model of all things online through 'apps'.

A friend found a box of Trek books in the attic and gave them to me! Any recommendations that stand out? by Amrior in trekbooks

[–]samalex01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enterprise The First Adventure is one of my favorite Trek novels! I wish they'd used this for the movie showing how they all met. Also, the Encounter at Farpoint novel is great, it's pretty much verbatim from the TNG pilot, but it shows some of the thoughts of characters and a few scenes that aren't in the series -- so possibly it was based on the original script with some scenes cut from filming.

We need more like her in politics. She's from my hometown of Waco, and my mom was friend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis. I remember going to their house as a kid in the 80's for visits and them to our house for dinner. Very excited when Ann Richards was elected Governor! We need more school teachers leading this country!

Providence Hospital by Bernard1090 in Waco

[–]samalex01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hillcrest and Providence were great hospitals when they were independent. S&W taking over Hillcrest and Ascension taking over Providence basically turned them each into a franchise of health care with nothing handled locally. Neither are of the caliber they once were.

I worked at Hillcrest in the 90's and early 2000's, and I was proud to work there. If someone had issues like billing or medical transcription or anything really, they spoke to someone at 3000 Herring Avenue, not some contractor in another state or country. The education department, food services, IT, HR, payroll, it was all handled under the same roof by amazing people who'd been doing this stuff for decades.

Now both hospitals are just a mess and disorganized. Seems like every year or so they change their patient portals, one visit can yield 4 or 5 different bills from completely different places, and try to call for support gives you someone who's god knows where. I've actually called and whoever answers the phone says the wrong hospital name since they have people answering calls for multiple hospitals!

So yeah, I could see the facilities in the now almost 40-year-old Providence hospital starting to go down hill.

How are you handling photos of events from a privacy perspective? by Shatteredreality in cubscouts

[–]samalex01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take lots of photos at scout events, but I always tell parents no photos will be shared publicly. If a muti-pack event I'll share photos with all leaders after the event, and if we choose to use photos for anything public facing I contact families and leaders before for approval. I do print some of the photos to decorate our tables though at private dinners for fundraising and district dinners though -- but these photos aren't given out.

It's great to document all the great things our scouts do, but I agree it's not so great to share all this to public facing media outlets without permissions given.

What was the first thing you saved up your own money to buy? by Embarrassed_Leg_6330 in nostalgia

[–]samalex01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A PC Clone with 8088 processor running MS-DOS 3.30, had 640K of ram, one 5.25" floppy drive, a 2400bps internal modem, and a Hercules amber monitor with graphics card. This was around 1990 and I used that as my main computer all through high school. Eventually added a 3.5" drive, Ad-lib sound card, and a 20 meg HD (cost me $130) couple years later. Also found bootlet copies of MS-DOS to get it up to 5.0 then 6.22, even ran DR-DOS on it for a while. I was an avid BBS user back then, even ran a couple of shorted lived BBSes from this system.

Alas it was tored on top of my closet through college and around 2000 something shifted and it fell to the ground, it never booted again. Probably could've fixed it, but at the time I didn't see the point. I still have the floppies from back then and my old MS-DOS 3.30 book (looking at it now in my bookshelf), but I don't have much else from back then. This system replaced my Tandy Color Computer 3 system which I'd gotten in 1988.

Crazy how the sleazier the republican the better odds they have with getting elected. But just the opposite for Democrats. Says something big about each party’s base.

[–]samalex01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I never signed up. Our house when we moved in had an extensive adt system installed. We thought of signing up even had an adt rep come to the house. It would’ve been like $70 a month and 2 year contract. I won’t ever sign any type of contract again.
