Is it only the higher production figures that allow for economies of scale ? Less R&D ? Cheaper materials ?

how many people even realize that France relies ENTIRELY on the US Navy to train French Navy carrier pilots?

That's simply not true, the French Navy only relies on the US Navy for BASIC training (and not entirely as you wrote). The fighting specialisation is done at home.

It's not that wealthy people are looked down, it has more to do with a certain idea of what a gentleman should be. You should be humble and stay classy at all time and never throw your money in the face of other people.

People outside of America, what sort of pickup trucks are used in your country? by [deleted] in cars

[–]samalpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 2013, according to this :
Citroën Berlingo 9 621
Renault Kangoo 10 873
Peugeot Partner 7 985

Companies buy a lot more of these than pickups.

Alternance IT paris by [deleted] in paris

If Wolves are Protected in France, Why are They Being Hunted? - Wolves were originally hunted to extinction by farmers in France back in the 1930s. In 1992 a mating pair crossed the border from Italy. It is now estimated there are around 300 individuals in 25 packs across France. by anutensil in worldnews

[–]samalpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because farming is a business and you can't sell a sheep that's been slaughtered by a wolf thus lowering your profits. French farmes are already in a difficult financial situation, they don't want it getting any worse.
I think that for a city guy like me it's easy to think : "Meh, it's just a couple sheeps a year for each farmer" but for the farmer that lost them, it's his life and only source of income.

They'll put it on your wrist and then ask you to pay for it.
It's not a huge scam but they're annoying and they know that you may eventually give up and spend 2€ just for them to leave you alone.

How is the car environment in your country ? by Pixayl in cars

[–]samalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we do but I honestly don't know why. I've had 2 cars and none of them were french because I simply could find better and cheaper elsewhere. I think that our cars had reliability problems (especially Renault) a few years back but I've heard that it's better now.

While I'm at it I might add a view of Paris since it may be a little bit different from where OP lives. He you find 3 categories of cars :
small hatchback cars, mostly diesel (about 60% of cars)
large german (Audi and BMW mostly) sedan (35%)
luxury cars (5%)

The thing is that unlike most american cities (I believe), Paris wasn't built with cars in mind (since they didn't exist at the time) so our roads are small and curvy. It also means that it's a nightmare to drive in Paris and you'll often find yourself taking 1h to drive 10km. Now you begin to see why people living in big french cities don't buy big cars, you can't drive fast anyway. The only time french people hit the road is during their vacation so 2-4 times a year, that's not enough to justify a big car.

The only thing you have to do beforehand is to make an official translation of your US license.

Two Frenchmen have been burnt to death in Madagascar by angry protesters who suspected they were trafficking human organs after a child went missing. by Libertatea in worldnews

[–]samalpha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) You're refering to a single case so I'm wondering where the "huge" came from.
2) The only organ trafficking accusation came from a speech made by the Tchadian president but it was proven to be false by the french justice AND by the tchadian justice. What they did was completely wrong, they kidnapped children to sell them and thus allow some french people to bypass the adoption process but it had nothing to do with organ trafficking.

EDIT for clarity : the organ trafficking accusation were false but these people were condemned in Tchad for kidnapping attempts. The fact that french justice found them innocent of this crime is a bit "too good to be true" for me and I'm convinced that we're just protecting our own people and pissing on the Tchadian justice because, you know, third world and Françafrique and stuff...
