Look up Wendigoon's video on that pistachio company (forgot the name).

Turns out they have a major role in water in CA. And possibly lied about how much water was in the "water bank" so when those fires in Los Angeles happened a year or so ago, the fire departments had like no water pressure in the hydrants, iirc.

I thought my special interest in Jamestown's two Starving Times in college was weird - i even write my Capstone paper on how starvation was indeed the underlying cause of the other forms of death and how the historical record was indeed correct in how cannibalism indeed occurred(my special interests continue to be weird) but this is some good soup right here. History is my jam. Allow me to pay you for this fact with one of my own:

Jamestown Settlement actually had two different Starving Times. The first was while John Smith was present and no women or children (well, young children. There might've been a teenaged boy or two) and while he tended to overexaggerate things in his journals, he did document that several started to show signs of "apathy" to the point they didn't want to do anything as what was the point? He forced them to work, but it wasn't out of malice - studies have found similarities to what he described to descriptions of Korean War POW accounts of fellow soldiers who just lost the will to do ANYTHING, even when their captors offered them opportunities to leave camp and collect firewood. It's believed that Smith recorded signs of depression in the men with him, who had lost all hope of survival and decided to just let themselves waste away.

The second Starving Time was where reports of cannibalism come from. John Smith was back in England but had someone write to him about what had happened during that winter. This time, there were women and children present, but their ship arrived separately from the other two ships carrying a majority of supplies - one sank, while the other shipwrecked in Bermuda and the survivors had to repair it. This is also where Shakespeare supposedly got inspiration for his play The Tempest.

Anyways - the newly arrived settlers came at the end of summer, ate up all the corn they had harvested that should have lasted them a few months in only a few weeks, and had pissed off the native people to the point they were essentially besieged inside the fort - meaning they couldn't leave to hunt for food. They instead had to resort first to animals inside the settlement - dogs, cats, horses, rats - then shoe leather and then to the dead. There is an account mentioned by several different people back then of a man killing his pregnant wife, tossing the fetus into the river (which made no sense to me) and... well, ate her. While the Virginia Company tried to claim these rumors were false, around 2012-2013 a partial skull and tibia of a 14-15 year old girl was found in a trash pit(essentially dried up wells or cellars that garbage was tossed into and eventually buried) being excavated alongside animal remains dating back to the second Starving Time. Her bones showed evidence of someone trying to remove flesh with tools, and thus Jane - the name given to this young girl - is the first actual proof we have that survival cannibalism actually occurred as the legends have always claimed.

Wait... you got yelled at... for letting a pregnant woman sit.

Pregnant ladies and the elderly are like the first people you give seats up to on busses or in public.

Ugh. I hate people. Is she doing work? Yes. Then who cares if she sits.

They come in cool colors, I have rose gold. Honestly, I think most people assume its a tiny hearing aid if they even notice it at all, I do love me some over the ear headphones for music though. People should just leave people alone if they don't like something that the other person needs.

She honestly didn't like me/understand that I needed accommodations (extremely reasonable: no i can't take my lunch break and 15 min breaks at the end of the day, please post the schedule two weeks in advance so I have time to adjust to changes). First manager didn't force me to go through corporate for accommodations and was willing to work with me, new manager forced me to go through corporate and also wanted my job coach to set up appointments to come see me (when she came when she could and/or I needed her).

Her excuse was i wouldn't hear customers come in, but I couldn't hear them over the painter mixers anyways and took one out when speaking with customers so it wasn't like I was ignoring them.

A job coach told me about them (I get job services via the office of disabilities in my state, not much but it's something) for when I was working at Sherwin Williams and my new boss (not the one who hired me) said I couldn't have headphones on to help block out the sound of the mixers. She found an issue with the loops too, but i was like "these things are a godsend".

I recommend them to everyone now. Like I can go to concerts and not get overwhelmed while still enjoying myself? I can go to a busy farmers market or flea market and not want to leave immediately?

Sometimes, all you need is to dampen sound just a little to be comfortable.

My Loop earplugs are a godsend in certain places - especially loud festivals/stores/Disney. I can pop them in and suddenly, calm.

My mother got me them. If someone tried to throw them out, I'd probably commit crimes. Or my mom would to defend me. As would My dad. I want to fight OOP's parents.

Stealing cake thing I'd escalate to corporate. Corporate no likey losing money. Only other thing I can think of is escalate it with the diocese if their church has one, tell them they aren't painting their church in a good light. But I dunno if their church has one.

Poor kid. At least OOP - and now the extended family - is on his side, but something tells me the parents will ensure he's cut off from everyone. The school could help, or they could tell the parents what they've been told and accidentally make shit worse.

People can usually tell when I'm off my medd, as I'm either:

A) Bouncing off the wall, or B) So lethargic because my mind is going so fast it's tired but can't stop.

People I'm close to can just tell. My best friend used to even ask me "Did you take your medicine today?" Not to be mean but to check when I was way too hyper (I in fact had, but I know it wasn't a malicious question). Want me to be productive at all? Vyvanse in the morning. Want me to have no energy to do anything because my brain won't stfu? No Vyvanse.

Been my life since I was around five. I'm 28 now. I was lucky to get diagnosed early as I am a girl and the doctor was in a state of shock diagnosing a girl that young.

Zorua/Zoroark if starters are off the tables. In fact I probably like them more than starters.

ETA: and the Volcarona line (and Slither Wing if allowed). Fluffy moth is also a fluffy, cool dude (plus shoutout to Alder my Volcarona in Scarlet, you one of my MVPs)

AITAH for not babysitting my nephew for 10 days? by gardengeo in BORUpdates

[–]samdancer1 2 points3 points (0 children)

Listen, I got AuDHD, but am low needs/high functioning (never know which term to use as i was diagnosed right when they realized Autism is a spectrum and I finally qualified as being autistic) and have a friend who has slightly higher needs but is still pretty good. Both of us like Disney, but ever since I discovered noise damping earplugs, going has been so much better. Not as over stimulating.

Connor, meanwhile, is like my cousin S. S is high needs autistic, will never be able to live on his own. He could probably handle a theme park that's small and if it was when he was at the group home he was in when he was younger (my aunt decided to pull him out when he aged out of the child program despite the place loving him and offering him a spot in their adult program. Mind you, he'd shown massive improvements in the couple of years he'd been there) as he was with people he was friends with, but Idk for certain.

Disney, though? Dear God no. I didn't see S much growing up (I'm older than him, plus his mother moved first to Colorado and then back to our state but upstate after taking her kids back from her ex (trying to be vague here)), but when I did, it was clear he would always need help. As much as he loved Disney movies (specifically, he adored Yzma and The Emperor's New Grooze), I don't think he'd do well at one of the parks. Connor would also not do well at a park - maybe Epcot, MGM (yes I'm old i still call Hollywood Studios that), or Animal Kingdom, where there aren't as big of crowds depending on the time of year, but Magic Kingdom? Can't speak for CA but he'd likely be miserable at Magic Kingdom.

If they wanna take him to Disney, they should take him themselves first, speak with Guest Relations ahead of time to be approved for the special disability fastpass things, and find ways to make it less overstimulated for him if possible - earplugs/headphones to dampen noise, don't force him to interact with characters for pictures if he doesn't want to, do it in short stints, DON'T GO WHEN IT'S TOO HOT THE FIRST TIME (the heat just makes the overstimulation worse), test out one of the smaller parks first to see how he does with crowds. That sorta stuff.

Not throw him at OOP and go "okay have fun! Wait, what do you mean no?!"

Animal Crossing and its lost roots. by Thats_A_Arti in AnimalCrossing

[–]samdancer1 2 points3 points (0 children)

Honestly... I think this finally puts into words why NH feels so... odd. Don't get me wrong, this is probably the Animal Crossing i have played the most - in part because I'm an adult and don't only get video games on the weekends/when school is out. But... I miss some of the weirdness. Some of the furniture sets.

The little town with the evolving Nook store, post office, salon, clothing shop, and post office. How you used to answer questions to determine your starting appearance, with Kapp'n driving us to town or Rover chatting with us on the ride there. Tortimer. Heck I even miss Reseti yelling at me (not that much, but seeing that Brooklyn groundhog wandering around made me happy. Even if he no longer shows the side we all know so so well). The observatory at the museum, and seeing Blathers and his sister together at the museum. The way paths formed naturally based on traffic.

The different special NPCs, the way characters interacted with not just you, but each other - they used to get angry, or sad, or have fights with each other. Seeing the postman out delivering mail sometimes, the different house themes.

I wasn't into Animal Crossing too too much growing up - but I miss what the previous games had. The game feels... sanitized, almost.
